'Sad' Songs - inspiration please!

This is going to sound very weird.. but:

My band have been asked to play a gig at an underground festival.. basically, the set is to consist of 3 hours of songs that will (quote) 'make people cry, in an uplifting way. Songs that will get you in the gut (any genre)'

NOW - the examples they gave were things like

Bon Jovi - ill be there for you
Rod Stewart - Handbags and Gladrags
Oasis - Little by little
Robbie - Come Undone
My Chemical Romance - Black parade

There were more.. I cant remember now!

Anyway - I rand the lads and we're all quite up for it as its not really the sort of thing we do. We have 4 months to practise, and learn all the new songs.

SO - our 'homework' is to each come up with 30 suggestions, and then we'll choose 30 songs out of the 150 to do.

So - any help with my list would be HUGELY appreciated!

fortyplus · 06/04/2007 21:06

What about 'Love Hurts' - Nazareth. Their version was a bit too pained & gritty for me - reckon it would sound great sung by a woman!

bewilderbeast · 06/04/2007 21:16

angel eyes - jeff healey band
halleilujiah - jeff buckley
belfast child - simple minds
gasoline - jann arden and jackson brown ( though that might only make me cry)
wires - athlete
he ain't heavy - the hollies
I would die for you - jann arden
behind blue eyes - the who

Pinkchampagne · 06/04/2007 22:15

Plenty to be getting on with Bassmama! Do let us know what you go for, as FMV says, if you can't provide mumsnetters with free festival tickets that is.

Cars - Drive

Who's gonna tell you when,
It's too late,
Who's gonna tell you things,
Aren't so great.

You cant go on, thinkin',
Nothings' wrong, but bye,
Who's gonna drive you home,
tonight.?

Who's gonna pick you up,
When You fall?
Who's gonna hang it up,
When you call?

Who's gonna pay attention,
To your dreams?
And who's gonna plug their ears,
When you scream?

willywonkasEgghunt · 09/04/2007 11:40

Hey bassmama, whatcha goin' to choose then? (You do realise that we will take the appropriate credit, and smug delight, in seeing any song in your final list that we had even contemplated, whether or not we posted the suggestion )

paulaplumpbottom · 09/04/2007 16:05

Yes whats the final decision

BassMama · 17/05/2007 15:41

Hi guys

Been away for a while, all 3 tours went really well and I would like to thank you all for the suggestions.

sorry I didnt get back to the thread earlier but i've been away. And very very busy!

to all who suggested Cash's 'Hurt', we ended the set on it and it went down amazing. I sang it and it turns out it can really lend itself to a womans voice!

we have now incorporated the song into our regular sets and its a winner!

We did use a few other suggestions (pink Floyd - Wish you were here, REM - everybody hurts, The Who - behind blue eyes.. loads more) So, thanks again guys. MUCH appreciated.

Now - we are playing at some festivals this year - Sunrise celebration, rockness, escape into the park (DJ set), point on the park, eden sessions, electric gardens (support), and Creamfields (DJ/percus set).

So - if any mumsnetters are coming to any of these events let me know!

thanks again guys.
