My husband hacked and being blackmailed

My husband received an email this morning stating his full name and quoting back one of his passwords. The guy says unless he pays over 1900 dollars in bitcoins they will start contacting his contacts.

Obviously we know we need to report this but can any one tell us to who. Obvs emergency services stretched so if anyone knows it there is a direct line email for a cybercrime we'd be glad of the advice.

What will they say to his contacts? Has he got anything to hide?

If it’s the one about porn it’s a scam. They have passwords for historic data breaches. If you search MN there has been a spate of these emails recently. You can google your email to see if you have been subject to data breach.

There are a few scams going round at the minute, Dona quick search as there's a website you can check if old passwords have been sold.

I think they are more of a filter for the regular police though.

I’ve had a couple of those, I’ve also had them where they’ve given me someone else’s password as well. I reported it online but I don’t think much happened tbh. I just ignored it and nothing happened, they are just chancers

It’s a scam. Delete the email and make sure he has changed his passwords.

It’s a scam and you don’t sound like you’ve shared full story. Why would it be an issue if he contacted his contacts unless he had some information to share. What else does it say? Is it the usual it’s recorded him watching porn? Don’t pay. The would be blackmailer has no such video material. Google it and tell your husband not to be a pervert.

They sent me the same email there is no way I've ever watched porn or had a wank while watching porn so it's an easy scam to spot

Oh gosh, I've had this a few times.
I've never reported it, I just changed my passwords.
The thing is it's probably from someone who bought it off someone who has hacked an account that he has.
Did they accuse him of watching porn...?
I've been accused of watching all sorts.

If it’s the porn one I also got the same email claiming to have recorded me and citing a password from over 10 years ago.

I got one yesterday too. Funnily enough I read in another thread yesterday that someone else had one too. I’m tempted to ask to see the ‘evidence’ they have as videos of cats chasing roombas isn’t exactly exciting.

We got these at work too a little while ago which amused everyone.

Delete and ignore. I got so many spammy bloody emails yesterday (all seemingly from America) it was driving me nuts!

I had one yesterday where there was just a blank where my password should be.

Get your husband to put his email address in here haveibeenpwned.com/ to see if he has been involved in any data breaches. It's more than likely the scammer has taken his email address and password from an historical breach and doesn't actually have access to anything else. If that's the case get your DH to change his passwords on anything related to that email address if they are all the same or similar. Don't respond to the email and certainly don't part with any money. Action fraud may be interested.

Are you able to see which breech your info came from?

Total scam. I've seen several threads in the last day on here saying almost the same thing.

I’ve had that and most of my friends too. Delete and ignore. They have just copied the email not hacked into your account. Pathetic.

Made me laugh though they threatened to tell all my clients the websites I had been visiting- knock yourselves out my online footprint is super dull 😁 mumsnet the guardian though guess I wouldn’t like my occasional daily mail sidebar of shame habit exposed!

I enjoy looking at the ‘I bought this glam dress from XXX online store and in real life it looks like a string bag’ (often accompanied by a very funny photo). Oh my shame.

They used an old password although it was slightly wrong

When I didn't respond they sent another one using another password similar to my current one.

It's a well known scam please report and ignore
