My husband hacked and being blackmailed

swithers · 11/04/2020 09:25

My husband received an email this morning stating his full name and quoting back one of his passwords. The guy says unless he pays over 1900 dollars in bitcoins they will start contacting his contacts.

Obviously we know we need to report this but can any one tell us to who. Obvs emergency services stretched so if anyone knows it there is a direct line email for a cybercrime we'd be glad of the advice.

Thanks in advance

I had an email this week saying they had my password for porn hub, I’ve never opened this in my life so I just deleted it!

TeetotalKoala · 15/04/2020 00:05

I had it about a year ago, I laughed, reported it as phishing and deleted it.

Who wants to be paid in Bitcoin right now anyway? The value has plummeted.

Frequency · 15/04/2020 00:06

I had this months ago. I admit I panicked momentarily as the sum they asked for was eerily similar to the sum I had in my freelancing account which was linked to the email address they had the very old password for but then I remembered that I a) don't have a web cam and b) don't watch porn.

I reported it as phishing, blocked the address it came from and nothing more became of it.

I wonder if anyone tries to pay up?

Scammers make a lot from this and other scams. My dad was done over by the Microsoft scam - the one where they phone you up and tell you you have viruses on your system and convince you to hand over remote access to your system upon which they promptly set a syskey password and try to charge you to unlock it. Fortunately, my dad had the sense to phone me and ask if I could get him back in for free before he paid. He had taken their number in the event that I couldn't get him back Hmm In the end I backed up all his data and reinstalled Windows.

There's also *Beryl, a lovely lady living at the assisted facility I work in. She's constantly asking us if she should pay her ISP. They threaten to cut off her internet on a weekly basis and last week I had her in tears on my shoulder telling me she was going to pay because they were taking her to court. Beryl doesn't have an ISP. She doesn't know what an ISP is. We've begged her not to pay. We've even contacted SS but they say she has capacity. One carer happened to be there when the "ISP" called and had a few choice words for the caller but they still call on an almost daily basis. It's only a matter of time until she pays, sadly.

Dont worry OP i have also had this. They included a previous password! Nd apparently they have pics of me pleasuring myself!

Lordfrontpaw · 15/04/2020 08:00

Camera cover: www.amazon.com/C-Slide-Sliding-Computers-Chromebooks-Consoles/dp/B00AZ639VG?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 I got a freebie from a supplier. A couple of post it notes also works!

Strawberrycreamsundae · 15/04/2020 08:22

I had one of these some time ago, I deleted it and nothing has happened.

Lordfrontpaw · 15/04/2020 21:53

Blimey just got another. They know all about my Facebook (that I don’t use) and my, errr, ‘homemade movies’ (oh please, I have better things to do). Ho hum.

TeetotalKoala · 16/04/2020 00:53

@Lordfrontpaw We raided the kids sticker box. DHs laptop has a Christmas penguin and mine has a shiny koala.

EarlGreyT · 17/04/2020 09:28

@Lordfrontpaw
Me too. They also know all about my Facebook (which I don’t use) and my homemade movies (which don’t exist) too.

I’ve had another 2 of these emails in the last 24 hours. They have now upped their price from $1900 to $2000 too.

I have ignored, blocked and deleted.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/04/2020 10:54

They are also seriously in breach of GDPR as they don’t even blind cc their ‘targets’ so I can see the whole mailing list of people they email.

TheQueensCousin · 17/04/2020 10:55

We've had this. It's a scam delete it immediately and change all your passwords.

ArbitraryNameChange · 17/04/2020 11:01

I'm in the process of deleting these fuckers, I'm getting two a day!!

Also spent ages changing passwords yesterday. Stupid twats, who wants bitcoin these days?

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 17/04/2020 11:03

I got this yesterday. Chance to have a wank and watch some porn would be a fine thing! It's a scam.

AzraiL · 17/04/2020 11:08

I've had one every day this week. They keep quoting a password I haven't used in a loooong time, claiming to have hacked into my computer and have a copy of a 'video' I made. The thing is, I have never made a 'video' and never will. They also asked me for bitcoin. Just get rid of it.

Emmagen · 17/04/2020 11:12

I had one of those almost a year ago. I ignored it but changed my passwords and nothing ever came of it. It's a scam, a scary one but still a scam.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/04/2020 12:33

Is there any way of seeing which sites have been hacked with your details?

safariboot · 17/04/2020 14:08

haveibeenpwned.com/

This will let you check if your details have been stolen in a known data breach, and be informed when future breaches are discovered.

JoJothesquirrel · 17/04/2020 14:12

My old work admin@ email used to get these. Never had time for a coffee at that job never mind a nice wank in the middle of the office. Always gave me a giggle though.

fluffiphlox · 17/04/2020 14:15

No he’s not. It’s an attempted scam. I get one of these about every three months. Ignore.

GingerBeverage · 17/04/2020 16:51

It's worth registering on haveibeenpwned.com
which will alert you every time they discover your email and/or password has been hacked from a website.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 17/04/2020 16:54

SCAM DELETE IGNORE

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 17/04/2020 16:55

Oh and change all your passwords and use a password manager l-ike lastpass

MerryDeath · 17/04/2020 16:57

i've had these, several months ago now, with passwords , i have ignored (i don't have a guilty conscience which helps) and nothing untoward has come of it.

RueOLearyWalker · 21/04/2020 08:46

Hi Swithers,

Stuff like this can be super scary. I received similar emails after I was already keeping an anti-stalking log with the police. Unfortunately, there isn't much the police can do about online threats.

My advice is keep a diary of these kind of events and stay vigilant. Make sure he is changing his passwords for financial accounts and maintains the proper internet safety protocols.

Remember that you are not alone standing against this type of coercive behaviour and most importantly speaking up matters as it creates a dialogue at a time when you might otherwise feel unsettled and alone.

I hope you are both ok and, yes, change your passwords frequently!
