Would love to hear from others tackling this challenge.

I'm back at it after having to take time off due to busy family events. Cracked 26k today, so I'm a mix of disappointed in having to take a break and relieved to be back on the horse! I've had some realisations about how I'm approaching my novel and seeing what isn't working. So that's an interesting experience. It's a pity that I'm seeing an approach that isn't working, while I guess also good that at least I can see it.

CoodleMoodle · 13/11/2023 21:23

Hit 21671 today which I'm pleased with. I force myself to write quickly by unplugging my laptop - it only lasts about an hour so I have to be speedy. A deadline definitely helps me otherwise I dick about too much.

Today's effort was less padding than I feel I've been doing the last couple of days, but still stretching scenes out longer than strictly necessary. One year I wrote 1600 words about someone climbing a tree!

Well done everyone who's still going, nearly half way Grin

weefella · 13/11/2023 21:44

Well done, everyone.

I've actually had a productive couple of days and have made it to 20k. It's mainly thanks to discovering the timer function on the NaNoWriMo website. My typing speed is rubbish but a 10-minute burst gives me up to 300 words. A few of those in a day has helped my word count no end.

NanoTime · 14/11/2023 15:54

Great work!

23,369

According to my stats I average 1,669 words a day at 0 words per minute, it feels even slower tbh.

Happy halfway point everyone.

I’ve veered badly off piste, trying not to worry about it. How’s everyone else getting on?

CoodleMoodle · 16/11/2023 20:45

26672 here today, so pleased to cross the halfway mark! I've not been well these last two days (bloody DC infecting me with their germs) so it's not been my best work, but it's fine. When I read it back at the end I'll know when I was ill!

Everyone who's still going, keep at it!

AdamRyan · 16/11/2023 22:38

Very very behind. Really not managed to catch up the weekend at all. Languishing on 16k. Youngest unexpectedly off school today which didn't help

GwenogJones · 16/11/2023 23:15

30439 - I'm slower through the week, only writing about 500 or so words a night and try to catch up on the weekends, though I don't think I'll get as much done as last weekend. I want to stay ahead, because as long as I'm ahead I'm motivated to keep going to stay ahead. I'm worried that if I fall behind on the graph I'll lose all motivation and give up.

brunchfiend · 17/11/2023 09:38

I've just passed 30k. It's frustrating as I've only done 6k in the last week and I don't think I'm going to do a lot better than that over the rest of the month. But I have a number of completed pieces I need to do in the next three weeks. I don't know how well I can bang out a first draft while producing polished writing at the same time. It's like those are two completely different skills to my brain and I can only do one or the other. I'm going to try do nano half the week and proper writing the other half, but if it doesn't work, I'll have to stop doing nano.

Especially as I have a lot of real life pre-Christmas stuff to do too. November is a shit month for mothers to bang out a novel.

NanoTime · 17/11/2023 12:06

Good job on passing 30k you two. I’m at 28,345 and relieved to scrape over today’s finish line.

I know what you mean about the two very different processes, it’s a constant struggle for me to silence the editor within and let the writer work freely.

Just in case anyone's missed it- this happened. nanowrimo.org/board-response

NanoTime · 18/11/2023 12:46

Thanks CurlewKate, I saw the email yesterday and it casts quite a shadow over the whole organisation.

I’m in a Discord group and extra glad we have this thread because it’s been very quiet without the official forums for the past week or so. It helps me a lot to know countless other people are working towards the same goal.

weefella · 18/11/2023 13:11

I hadn't realised about the grooming allegations on the forums. I look at my local group one but gave up on the main ones after the big website upgrade. I found it harder to navigate my way around.

I'm only on 23k but I'm hoping for another good weekend where I can catch up a bit.

Well done to everyone who's managed to write this month, no matter what the wordcount.

GwenogJones · 19/11/2023 00:28

I had no idea this had happened. I just use the website to record my number, get the badges and watch my graph go up.

I've had a good day today and reached 37 219 words, which is 74%. I'd like to try and push for 40 k tomorrow but I'm out a lot of the day and can't stay up too late on a Sunday evening so I don't know if I'll make it.

I think I cracked 25k last weekend which, if I'm right, means I've written almost 15000 words in a week. Not too shabby.

NanoTime · 19/11/2023 11:10

Nice going you two. I’m at 31, 732 which is 63% and in the thick of things. Getting used to writing freely and letting the characters be themselves, even if it disrupts the structure I’d planned.

I’d very happily do this all year round I think, if it supported me half as well as the day job.

20,497. Hopefully catching up a bit :)

MargaretThursday · 19/11/2023 21:21

I look like I'm doing well on 38k, but I've actually restarted my story for the third time this weekend. I think I'll stick with this one though; the other two just weren't working for me.

PainPeas · 20/11/2023 14:10

Can I jump in? I was using the forums up until they locked down and am missing having writing buddies. Tried their Discord but it wasn't all that busy either!

I'm at a mere 3k words because I started late and have found it difficult without the support of the forums (in my head I count the whole thing as being "paused" if the forums aren't open, so I can excuse myself for not getting my head down and my word count up until they properly open again 😁)

NanoTime · 20/11/2023 16:38

Hi PainPeas, great to have you here. I love your username. Does every freezer have some?

Hope you find the thread helps you to keep going.

Welcome, PainPeas!

I had a productive couple of days and have now made it to just over 30k.

GwenogJones · 20/11/2023 22:52

I've just crossed 40k!

NanoTime · 21/11/2023 09:20

Well done weefella and GwenogJones!

I can’t believe there’s only a little over a week to go and I still struggle to override the annoying voice in my head that insists I write a first draft that reads like a professionally edited and polished final piece.
