Would love to hear from others tackling this challenge.

Had a good day today after getting cut short with taking ds to A&E yesterday, which is probably the best excuse for not doing more I've had yet. I'm not on just over 12k, which means I can have a few lighter days too.

AdamRyan · 06/11/2023 11:17

I didn't do any yesterday 😳need to get back on the horse today

GwenogJones · 06/11/2023 23:32

I've had a good evening, this evening: 2295 words. According to my word counter on the nanowrimo site I'm somewhere over 17800 words and 36% of the way. I'm finding the site really helpful - unlocking the badges is weirdly motivating and trying to hit 20k a few days before my target graph tells me I should is really spurring me on.

NanoTime · 07/11/2023 10:17

Hope your DS is okay MargaretThursday.

I’m a bit stuck, even though my book is in such a formulaic genre it should be the writing equivalent of painting by numbers. I know what goes where, in theory, yet things keep going off track.

It is good to be at 22% though, with only 810 words needed to meet today’s target.

Late to this thread but I'm doing it, just over 10k words so far. Haven't missed a day. Have tried 3 years running and never done this well. Here's planning on a win!!

NanoTime · 07/11/2023 12:54

Well done mummummummummummummmmmmy!

This is my most successful nanowrimo so far too, I’ve tried it before but my goal was mostly to reinforce daily writing habits.

  1. Struggling a bit. I feel like I don't know how to link events so just jumping from thing to thing. Enjoying trying something new though!

I hope that’s perfectly normal because it’s the same here. Probably easier to link it all together at the end and just enjoy the creative freedom for now?

13,385 words so far. I used Speechify to read it all out to me and it took just over an hour, which felt like ages. I still swing from thinking it’s not bad at all to fighting the urge to delete great chunks of it but hope to stick with it. I imagine it’s going to get much more difficult for a while, the middle parts of projects are always tougher than beginning or ending them. How’s everyone else doing?

Have no idea if it's total bilge or not. I've always said I'm not creative so this is a big challenge for me. Really enjoying what comes out of my head while I'm writing though. I have a new character demanding to be heard who I hadn't even thought of when I started. How dies it even happen? So weird

CoodleMoodle · 08/11/2023 20:44

13336 here. I've had a couple of days where I've been free to write and should really write some extra as a cushion, but it's just not happening this time! Still hitting the target every day, which is the main thing.

NanoTime · 09/11/2023 10:36

Great updates both!

I hit today’s goal before work, it’s odd how much easier it is to get the words out when time is of the essence.

15,454 but I’m enjoying this part, so will probably add some more. I’m aiming for 50k but realistically need around 60k for a complete first draft.

I've been a bit slower over the past two days - about 500 words yesterday and 1000 today, so I'm not as far ahead as I was. But I'm on 19439 words so will hopefully break 20 000 tomorrow, and hopefully I'll get a lot done over the weekend. Ideally I'd like to be 50% done by Monday.

NanoTime · 10/11/2023 10:38

19439 sounds miles ahead to me!

OP posts:
AdamRyan · 10/11/2023 10:50

Yea me too! I'm not going to make 50,000 I don't think. I'm on 12,000 ish so a bit behind.
The main aim for me was to see if I could do it though so I'm not too fussed

NanoTime · 10/11/2023 11:20

It would ‘only’ take an extra 200 words a day for you to hit 50k by the end AdamRyan?

I’ve read over and over on the forums that the 50k target is simply the motivator, and the real goal is simply to experience writing in a more free and creative way.

OP posts:
AdamRyan · 10/11/2023 12:27

Oh really? I feel like I'm miles off the pace!

NanoTime · 10/11/2023 12:50

I don’t know, I’m not great with numbers but say you were 5000 words behind. That would only be 250 extra words a day. Or a couple of extra efforts each weekend?

OP posts:
weefella · 10/11/2023 20:21

I'm only on 11k.

I don't know if I'll make it all the way to 50k but I've enjoyed it so far. I've managed to write something every day, so I'm happy with that.

Is it your first time? It's my first year and I always thought I couldn't possibly write anything (not creative) so even starting feels like an achievement!

weefella · 11/11/2023 11:50

No, not the first time.

I actually managed to finish a couple of times back when I was still at home with my DC. I found though that I lost my motivation once I'd actually done it. By the time I was ready to go back and give it another go, I was back to working full-time and too tired to get much done. Since then I've been lucky if I even made it to 5k in a month.

I've been inspired this morning though and have already written 2k.

NanoTime · 12/11/2023 16:42

20,039

Having a lot of ‘what is the actual point of this’ thoughts as yet another pointless scene is written but keep trudging along regardless. Presumably it will seem worth it by the end.

OP posts:
GwenogJones · 12/11/2023 21:08

I've just cracked 25k. I'll keep writing for a while yet, but I'm glad I've met my goal for the weekend and I'm at my half way point before the half way point of the month, it makes me feel like I'm more likely to get to the end.

I'm only writing fanfic and it's an ongoing work (Harry Potter Marauders era - all seven years eventually), I've been writing it for 2 years already and it's nearly 450k words long so far (coming to the end of fourth year). Writing fifth year is my nanowrimo challenge. It will be well over 50k when it's done (more like 100k+) and I know it will get done however long it takes, so it is the sprint of hitting a word count within a certain amount of time that I want to achieve (because I procrastinate with this story so much!).

I'm really enjoying the challenge, I just wish I could keep it up without the official deadline and the website, because I know once November is over I'll be back to procrastinating.

AdamRyan · 13/11/2023 12:11

Been busy then hungover all weekend so no further progress here. Sad

NanoTime · 13/11/2023 13:06

Best excuse ever AdamRyan!

My goal of 50-60k feels much more achievable now GwenogJones, that’s a seriously impressive word count you’ve got there already.

I’m at 21, 710. The halfway point feels close now.
