Morning all,

So Easter is behind us and there is a short, clear stretch before the school summer holidays arrive.

Who among your would like to join me in a writing/editing sprint during May?

I’m planning to edit my new manuscript written during the inaugural MuNoWriMo back in February 😊

We can keep each other on-track by checking in with progress reports, and spurring each other to stay with the process every day.

This time it would be great to share more about what we are working on, too, don’t you think?

Starting tomorrow. Do as little or as much as you can. Just drop into the flow.

Who’s in?

Hello all, and thanks for your updates.

It’s DAY 23 and half term break looms (for those of us with school-age kids).

Still making very slow progress here. Very. In fact, it’s unlikely that I will finish the edit by the end of the month unless I get a rush of motivation to work on it at night/in the early morning. Maybe I will try that - three hour-long stints.

Still preparing to enter the competitions, polishing synopsis etc.

Hope some of you are still in the saddle!

My writing ambitions have been steamrollered by the demands of my garden - my other hobby. But with a week to go before the end of May I plan to write as much as I can of this draft. I'm weirdly hoping for rainy days to free me up!

Someone on here introduced me to the concert of the first draft as "telling yourself the story". I find it helpful to focus on that.

PhilibusterVigilantly · 24/05/2022 11:11

*concept

BelladiMamma · 27/05/2022 10:36

Very slow going here too but I am managing to carve out sensible time each week for it.

I've realised that left to my own devices I keep fit and write. I don't drink alcohol or socialise a lot although I have many good friends. I don't spend a lot of time with my partner although I'm serious about him.

I hate being dragged out of my writerly cave and that's what has happened to my life for the past few weeks. It's painful!!!

I'm a typical writer basically!

StellaOlivetti · 27/05/2022 11:17

I have finished a tolerable first draft - just over 64000 words. I have lost any ability to be objective about it so have no idea whether it’s a work of staggering genius, or the biggest pile of nonsense ever penned. Since sending it to the publishers yesterday, of course, I’m haunted by the increasing certainty that it’s the latter. So I’m keeping as busy as possible to stop myself thinking about it. I fixed the massive plot hole; the choices were: rewriting history, altering the human gestational period, or a bit of a botched job, which is what it ended up being. But it’s finished! May was extremely productive for me so thanks to all xx

I finished my short story, and oh dear, I managed to put off more editing tonight by starting another story idea. Bad idea!

cloudmessenger · 28/05/2022 16:56

Well done @StellaOlivetti and @MargaretThursday !

DAY 28, half term has arrived, and I have 30 pages still left to look at, and my competition entries to dispatch. Will get it done before the end of the month. Overall I’m very pleased. Being ‘accountable’ on this thread has helped me not to get distracted.

I’m thinking of rolling over straight into #MuNoWriMoJun22 in case anyone else wants to join? I have a 30k MS to finish. Also, need to start sending out this nearly-complete MS, but that won’t take much time.

Thanks for setting this up ✍🏼 💻 📖

Wundebar! Let’s keep it rolling

OP posts:
MargaretThursday · 28/05/2022 21:07

I'll join, and try and do a bit more editing.

I'm not sure whether I'm making it better or worse still when editing Grin

cloudmessenger · 28/05/2022 21:15

All you can do is trust yourself. Onwards we go.

Ceridwenn · 29/05/2022 15:55

Well, decided on an ending to my novel so will spend next week finishing it off. At 78k and think have another 8k to finish off first draft. Then I'll enter editing period!

cloudmessenger · 30/05/2022 10:05

Round of applause @Ceridwenn

Congratulations!

Feeling re galvanised having spent a lot of time thinking about what I want my MC's journey to be. Feeling like it's time for draft4, having done 3 drafts, each of which is a very different version - plot and characters stay the same, but the telling of it is different each time.

This one might go 1st person and the time strands much shorter.

cloudmessenger · 31/05/2022 07:39

That’s great @BelladiMamma Hopefully you can carry that focus and galvanisation into June with us?

Pleased to report that I completed my edit, and sent the MS to three competitions. I might now send it for a MS assessment, or start sending it out. Haven’t decided yet.

Ceridwenn · 31/05/2022 13:09

What is a MS assessment?

BelladiMamma · 31/05/2022 13:17

Good luck @cloudmessenger

BookWorm45 · 31/05/2022 13:20

I'm in for June (having only spotted this thread on 31 May it seems a bit late....)

Ceridwenn · 05/06/2022 17:16

I have a first draft! It's very rough and will needs lots of work, but I still have one!

cloudmessenger · 06/06/2022 09:42

Thanks @BelladiMamma

@Ceridwenn when you get people to read your manuscript and give feedback

Welcome @BookWorm45 !

So, although I have been lost in the frazzle of half-term, it’s technically DAY 6 of #MuNoWriMoJun22

I won’t start a new thread, I don’t think. We may pick more scribblers up as we go along.

My goal for the day is to make a decision about what to do with my existing MS, and choose what to work on next while I let that one prove for a bit. In other words, pondering in spare slices of time. Then tomorrow I’d like to drop back down into writing.

Feel free to share your goals.

StellaOlivetti · 06/06/2022 11:35

Well done on your finished first draft, @Ceridwenn

snowqu33n · 07/06/2022 09:41

Count me in for June!
I seem to be in an endless editing cycle - at what point do you stop tinkering and just decide it’s finished?
1,000 or so new words today

cloudmessenger · 07/06/2022 14:18

I don’t know @snowqu33n but what I do know is putting the MS aside for a bit and doing something else helps with the eternal tinkering. Kudos on your 1,000 words today!

Congrats @Ceridwenn on your completed first draft!

I’ve just had a breakthrough re what to move onto next, and how to frame the story…Half term is over, and we are out of the gates.
