Morning all,

So Easter is behind us and there is a short, clear stretch before the school summer holidays arrive.

Who among your would like to join me in a writing/editing sprint during May?

I’m planning to edit my new manuscript written during the inaugural MuNoWriMo back in February 😊

We can keep each other on-track by checking in with progress reports, and spurring each other to stay with the process every day.

This time it would be great to share more about what we are working on, too, don’t you think?

Starting tomorrow. Do as little or as much as you can. Just drop into the flow.

Who’s in?

Thanks! Did a workshop last night and also one tonight, looking at parts of my ending and falling action ... redrafting approx 3k words

meloncolic · 05/05/2022 13:37

Me, I want to edit 50k words by end of month. 1500 words a day.

Coinchend · 06/05/2022 17:33

Up to 75k and think maybe 10 hours left of first draft writing but I now have an interview to prepare for so may not be able to write everyday.

How is everyone else?

StellaOlivetti · 06/05/2022 18:47

Hello everyone, I’m up to just over 20 000 words of (hopefully) polished first draft. And I’ve got a title!!!!! I’m not good at titles so I’m extremely 😀

BelladiMamma · 07/05/2022 09:08

Lost yesterday which I hoped would be a good writing day. Too much personal stuff going on!
Hoping I can manage to do a bit over the weekend

Coinchend · 04/05/2022 08:46

I only managed 280 odd words last night as didn't get started till gone 9. And they were terrible. I am finding this last slog to a complete first draft very hard and the writing is suffering because I want it finished. Keep thinking I can then edit the hell out of it.

2 hours every morning! That's a good target to have.

Keep going! You'll get there

cloudmessenger · 09/05/2022 10:33

Morning all, it's DAY 9 of MuNoWriMoMay22

I've realised there is a competition I can submit my MS to at the end of the month, which will give me an added boost to my focus on editing. I'm feeling fairly pleased with it and not bogged down. Lots of other things calling on my time, but it's a pleasure to turn the phone off for an hour and progress the MS.

What's happening with yours?

I'm up to 2.5k of my short. I'll probably need to trim it as the limit is 3k though.

Throughthesquarewindow · 10/05/2022 07:18

I've been up since 5.30, writing. It's so lovely having the time and space to do it in peace! And getting easier and easier with the amazing light in the mornings.

I'm not getting bogged down in the word count, it became a distraction last time. My goal is to finish the first draft of one of the two narrative strands by the end of May (it's a split time narrative and I'm focusing on one at a time).

StellaOlivetti · 11/05/2022 21:41

Well, I have discovered a plot hole the size of the Grand Canyon … it was all going so well. I hope everyone else is feeling more positive.

BelladiMamma · 12/05/2022 08:59

Zero progress here but 3k due for my writers group this Friday so I have a deadline! Huzzah!

cloudmessenger · 13/05/2022 10:40

DAY 13 of #MuNoWriMoMay22 and this writer is feeling…sad. There is something sad about editing. I’m not solving creative problems anymore. The world of the book is passing through on its way to the scrapyard of memory. I’ve enjoyed writing this one. And now it’s over (I think, not having come across any major issues requiring big changes).

I suppose the answer to that is to get the edit completed (I’m only 1/5 through as of today), and move onto the next idea.

Editing. Sad.

Good to hear of early morning writing sessions (so jeal, wish I could think at that hour) and achievable goals being achieved. Onwards!

I agree about editing. I find writing exciting, can't wait to do it, but editing I just find a bit meh.
I'm not even totally convinced it's better afterwards but that's probably me.

StellaOlivetti · 16/05/2022 13:25

Oh dear, I have reached the stage where everything I’ve written seems like utter bilge. Am going to step away from it for a few days.
re editing, I do know what you mean. I never know when to stop, like I lose the ability to see whether any changes are improving things or not.

cloudmessenger · 19/05/2022 11:47

Goodness me. How is it DAY 19 already??

Slow going here—only 1/4 of the way through, so I must commit to at least an hour a day of going full-pelt to get the edit done by the end of the month. I keep extending parts of it, which means the end gets further away. Not sure I can realistically promise not to keep adding…

Hope your MS looks better with fresh eyes @StellaOlivetti

Agree @MargaretThursday Objectivity becomes harder the longer you spend with a MS.

Good luck with your goals, all!

Tick tock ... slow slow progress here too.

Lots of thinking though!

cloudmessenger · 19/05/2022 12:15

Thinking is good @BelladiMamma
May you have a fruitful day

It’s taking me 45 minutes to edit two pages. Is it just me?! Or is everyone that slow? @Throughthesquarewindow @meloncolic @Coinchend

OP posts:
StellaOlivetti · 19/05/2022 12:36

I don’t know about everyone @cloudmessenger but I am definitely that slow! Slow and steady wins the race. My WIP started life in summer 2014

cloudmessenger · 19/05/2022 12:44

I’m sure it will be a thing of beauty when you decide you’re finished @StellaOlivetti It’s not unheard of for a debut (sorry if I missed full info and you’re on number nine, or something) to take a decade in the making. Slow and steady wins the race, indeed!

How are you getting along @snowqu33n @felulageller ? (can you tell I’m procrastinating just a little bit…)

Hey all, how is it going? I am really excited to move into editing. I'm tired of the writing. I've taken about 10 days plus off because I had a job interview to prep for, and I got the role! Started back with writing today.

I'm really debating my ending. I have about 3 more chapters to go. I have about 5 different scenarios for an ending. I don't know whether to dive into editing and see where that leads me to or is it foolish to start editing without the ending? My ending was sorted, but my chosen one seems a bit meh and I wanted to spice it up.

Ceridwenn · 19/05/2022 20:40

I've NC. I'm up there somewhere. I couldn't really pronounce my last username so I thought I'd best change it.

Does anyone use other writing forums? I've been reading the creative writing forum which I find helpful.

Not sure how you pronounce your new one either Grin

I use Scribophile which i find really helpful, although very distracting. I'm about 3 months behind on critiques owed too, which doesn't help my writing.

I'm still plodding along on my short story. I wrote it with one ending and decided to change it to another, so I'm about 3/4 way through for the second time!

snowqu33n · 20/05/2022 14:36

Hi all, haven’t posted in a while, I have had a busy time, and a cold, which has slowed me right down, but I am currently working on cover design sketches and had some good feedback on the draft of the first novel, although I am waiting for feedback from two more people before working on the final edit.
I am firming up the plot of the second book in my head and dropping ideas into a notebook but not any further forward in actual words!!
It’s so frustrating when life gets in the way😬
My plan is to sit down to it properly next week when I have a few hours with no one else at home (bar the cat).
