First novel competition: If you think you've got a novel in you, but despair of ever being published, stand by: in partnership with renowned literary agency Janklow & Nesbit, we're launching a fantastic competition for unpublished novelists.

Submit the first 8,000 words of your novel - Janklow & Nesbit guarantee to read every single entry. One enormous stumbling block to getting published is simply being noticed - so this really is an amazing opportunity.

The fantastic prize on offer is representation by J&N - setting you firmly on the path to publication: get details of how to enter here.

If you'd like to enter, but could use a bit of bespoke advice, we've organised a one-day Get Published course on Saturday 29 November 2014, where you'll have the chance to pick the brains of the Janklow agents and leading editors - and pick up tips from authors who've already broken through.

What are you waiting for?

Oh well! Congratulations to those who made it.

Claireindc · 23/02/2015 17:05

Congrats to the winners!

SJGW · 23/02/2015 17:06

Congratulations to everyone on the list. Disappointed I couldn't be there with you, I'll just have to do a little better next time.

pluCaChange · 23/02/2015 17:06

Quick work, JessMumsnet! Flowers

And congratulations to TEN people! Smile

JessMumsnet · 23/02/2015 17:08

Ahem, make that 11 . Shortlist here.

sniffle12 · 23/02/2015 17:13

Well at least it made me get my proverbial bottom into gear and write something! Congrats to all winners Smile

pluCaChange · 23/02/2015 17:14

Oops, I missed that, too. Come to think of it, I don't remember seeing the Death book the first time I looked. Either I didn't scroll, or my Lenten comment got someone worried!

(It isn't mine, by the way.)

TootingJo · 23/02/2015 17:16

Well done to those 11. :) Hope J&N will run this comp every year.

mjmooseface · 23/02/2015 17:18

Ooh all shortlisted entry titles sound very intriguing!

Well done to everyone who has been shortlisted, as well as those who submitted an entry in the first place! I'm not up there but will continue writing anyway! :)

MegCleary · 23/02/2015 17:19

Congrats to all shortlisted.

Waitingforsherlock · 23/02/2015 17:21

Oh, so disappointed.... But congratulations to everyone short listed.

elfycat · 23/02/2015 17:21

Well done to those on the list. I hope there will be more than one 'overall winner' out of you guys too.

I'm feeling energised to improve on mine for another time Grin

MrsWembley · 23/02/2015 17:32

Congratulations to all! Thanks

luxliving · 23/02/2015 17:37

Humph. Couldn't even get on a short list of 11.

Unless they gave my novel a different name? Ah, that'll be it.

Seriously: well done those eleven.

Showy · 23/02/2015 17:43

Congratulations to the shortlisted.

I am gutted. I didn't give my book a title and I've decided that's why I'm not shortlisted. Later on I will accept that it's because I can't write for toffee and I should just give the feck up on it.

Have had a bit of a cry.

Brill news for those chosen.

Dobble · 23/02/2015 17:45

Many congrats to the winners. Disappointed for myself but so glad I tried.

Dobble · 23/02/2015 17:49

Don't give up Showy. There are loads of us disappointed here.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/02/2015 17:50

I'd be interested to know how many of the shortlisted 11 are regular MNers, and how many registered to enter the competition.

If you've been shortlisted and are a regular on this thread, please identify yourself so that we can bask in your reflected glory!

Showy · 23/02/2015 17:52

Cheers Dobble.

I've had a tough few months that's all and I put everything of myself into this attempt in an effort to achieve something positive at a pretty rough time.

I will go back to the book and work on it some more. It's the fine line though isn't it between loving writing for the sheer joy of doing it and accepting that perhaps you're a crap storyteller and nobody's interested after all. Grin

tenderbuttons · 23/02/2015 17:56

I am on the shortlist and I've been on MN for ever, or at least nine years.

tenderbuttons · 23/02/2015 17:57

And I am very chuffed, but really thought I would be in the shoes of those on here who are disappointed. I've failed to win lots of other competitions, though, and I've been writing for more than ten years so it's worth persevering.

JaneGilheaneyBarry · 23/02/2015 17:59

@tenderbuttons that is so so wonderful and very encouraging. I wish you all the best : )

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/02/2015 18:01

Showy, if you're going to survive as a writer you need to learn never, never to put too much weight on any particular submission/ competition / book. Even established writers get rejected all the time. One competition means zero. Get some honest critiques and then either make your book better or submit it elsewhere.

OneFootIn1999 · 23/02/2015 18:03

Fantastic achievement tenderbuttons, you must be thrilled! It's encouraging to read your words. This was my first competition and like others here, I feel disappointed. You can't help it can you- as much as you tell yourself that your book won't be on the list, your eyes still will it to be there even as you see it is not.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/02/2015 18:05

Oh that's brilliant Tenderbuttons! GrinGrinGrin and WineWineWine for you tonight! Fingers crossed for you now to be the winner!
