First novel competition: If you think you've got a novel in you, but despair of ever being published, stand by: in partnership with renowned literary agency Janklow & Nesbit, we're launching a fantastic competition for unpublished novelists.

Submit the first 8,000 words of your novel - Janklow & Nesbit guarantee to read every single entry. One enormous stumbling block to getting published is simply being noticed - so this really is an amazing opportunity.

The fantastic prize on offer is representation by J&N - setting you firmly on the path to publication: get details of how to enter here.

If you'd like to enter, but could use a bit of bespoke advice, we've organised a one-day Get Published course on Saturday 29 November 2014, where you'll have the chance to pick the brains of the Janklow agents and leading editors - and pick up tips from authors who've already broken through.

What are you waiting for?

I would love to know how many entries there were.

Sherlock, one of my typos includes repeatedly alternating between two possible spelling variations of a place name. I had a long debate with a reader about which spelling was most politically correct, and then, agreeing with him, proceeded to change MOST of the spellings. I don't know how I missed a few. I support your decision to avoid looking for typos now.

There should be a typo remorse support group.

Oh, ffs, I'm so pleased to see everyone still here. This thread has disappeared off my 'threads I'm on' link on my app, so I didn't realise it was still going.

I got in 50 minutes late, due to lack of memory/headspace and somehow being convinced I'd read that the closing date was the 31st!Blush Didn't sleep well that night...

I've been pondering since (especially as I, too, received the 'thanks for your submission' email) whether or not they would dismiss late entries, as surely they are looking at manuscripts all the time. I'm so relieved to read posts ^^ that seem to be saying the same thing. I'm especially glad to read elfycat's comment re what they actually said during the course.Grin

CatWomantotheRescue · 18/02/2015 06:00

I wouldn't worry about typos too much as I hardly think they're going to throw about great stories due to a few misspellings. I have plenty of typos in mine but more than that I'm concerned about the way it all flows. I wish I had slowed the action down in some places and sped it up more in others. Oh well!

I hope we do see the short list on the 23rd which isn't long to wait now, and I hope we find out how many entries there were and that we get to read the short listed ones. I'm not asking for much, am I Grin!

tenderbuttons · 18/02/2015 09:22

I asked, and apparently there were about 500 entries. So there you go.

Showy · 18/02/2015 09:26

500, wow. I very much doubt we'll get to read the shortlisted entries until/unless published.

MrsWembley · 18/02/2015 19:25

Oh fuck!Shock

pluCaChange · 19/02/2015 21:10

Isn't the shortlist this Monday?

Greenstone · 20/02/2015 10:11

Wow, 500 is a LOT.
I'm not really surprised though. I've always suspected there were a load of frustrated novelists on MN Wink

pluCaChange · 20/02/2015 12:59

I'm going to report you for troll-hunting, Greenstone.

Wink
MrsWembley · 20/02/2015 23:06

I've got Tuesday in my head for the shortlist but, then again, I thought the date for last entries was a day later than it actually was...

TootingJo · 21/02/2015 09:14

I was sure it was Tuesday too, but it says 23rd. Hmm Maybe Janklow & Nesbit had a Tuesday sort of typo on the competition page, so they will be extra forgiving of all of those who made a few mistakes in the submission?

SJGW · 22/02/2015 14:16

I'm looking forward to seeing the shortlist tomorrow. While I know that we all secretly long to see our stories on that list, it's good to know that some people are going to have a good day tomorrow Smile

MarshaBrady · 22/02/2015 14:18

I didn't do this, but it is a great competition. Looking forward to the short list.

luxliving · 22/02/2015 15:24

That's a nice thing to say, SJGW.

SJGW · 22/02/2015 17:32

Luxliving, it hides an over competitive nature, I promise you Wink

MrsWembley · 22/02/2015 19:17

SJGW, that was lovely and I'm sure hides nothing of the sort .Grin

But good luck to everyone!Thanks

LeavingLA · 22/02/2015 19:30

I'd like there to be one crashingly rude and inappropriate Mumsnet username on the shortlist. Immature, I know, but it would cheer me up to see Janklow and Nesbit praise the exquisite literary talents of AnyFucker, Catsbum, or DoYourKegels. (And I don't even know which ones of those are real Mumsnetters.)

MrsWembley · 22/02/2015 19:31

I'm sure AnyFucker would be glad of a name check anywhere!Wink

Wonder if she's entered...

sparkysparkysparky · 23/02/2015 07:44

Confused Shameless marking thread

SnakeyMcBadass · 23/02/2015 07:48

Ditto

talkingofmichaelangelo · 23/02/2015 07:57

ahem, me too. Good luck everyone!

LeavingLA · 23/02/2015 09:21

I love that someone has already posted on the Mumsnet Competitions/ Winners' Corner thread, asking at 09:06 where the shortlist is. I foresee rioting in the streets if it's not out by lunchtime.

luxliving · 23/02/2015 09:26

I admit to monitoring that thread myself...
