Anyone writing a novel this November?
I've signed up for my first try!
I'm doing some planning and outlining at the moment and looking forward to starting.

OP posts:
Cherrypi · 02/11/2013 08:47

I really like scrivener strabby. I've written 1666 words but I'm already boring myself with my plot. So far my character has gone to the library and had coffee. Dull dull dull.

Stravy · 02/11/2013 09:18

Is that a case of writing what you know, •cherrypi• ? Mine is murdering her husband Hmm I'm out of my depth, I wish she would go to the library.

AtomicLyn · 02/11/2013 09:30

Hi all!

I'm using my nano name for this. This year I plan on writing a whole 120k novel, despite having never won nano any other time ever Hmm

Day 1: 3916

My novel can be summed up as The Bell Jar meets X-Men!

I use Scrivener & for brainstorming I've been using Scapple by the same people & it's been great! There's a free trial, but it's that good I'll probably buy.

Good luck everyone!

DarlingScribbler · 02/11/2013 10:22

just did 2123, crikey maybe this can be done after all, have no plot, can't think of character names and do not like the odd mundane v.s spooky stuff that is occurring but it is words on the page right?

Does anyone else write the thing then come up with character names?

Stravy · 02/11/2013 10:24

@womenwriters on twitter did a thing on choosing character names

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/11/2013 10:26

I've used 'holding' names before, and just fixed the final ones later on.

DarlingScribbler · 02/11/2013 10:34

I think I will do the holding names thing then, please be my friends on nano, I have none and will try not to use up this thread with my vacuous wanderings Grin

AlottaRunning · 02/11/2013 14:53

I managed to do 1667 before I went to work yesterday and then another few hundred before I went to bed. Will try and get more done today. I'm trying to get ahead in the first two weeks so I can relax and concentrate on uni work in the final 2 weeks.

I usually have names for my main characters but not secondary ones, or I find half way through I don't like someones name and change it.

Place names I'm terrible thinking off so just call them something daft until I think of something more sensible.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 02/11/2013 17:12

I get the road atlas out for place names and surnames.

redhappy · 02/11/2013 21:56

Have finally got started. It's been so difficult finding time with the kids at home. But I've been trying to do a bit of planning in my head, and scribbling odd notes down. I'm not someone who can just wing it, I much prefer to have a plan.

The last writing I did was at Uni, but the last creative writing must have been at school!

So, my word count is well below where it should be! But I'm rather pleased with 399 words so far today. Going to stay up for another couple of hours and see what I can get done.

Really impressed by everyone's wordcount, and the other commitments they have going at the same time!

ninah · 03/11/2013 16:12

Darling I'm going to 'buddy' you because I like your slack start! Grin you are making up for it now though! I am ninah on there if anyone wants to find me. I have a poor average and I am really struggling to get started.

GoldiChops · 03/11/2013 21:55

Phew, glad I found this thread. This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo and I'm struggling! actually this is my first time attempting anything writerish- I have all the thoughts and ideas, none of the gumption. So far this year I have managed 1361 words, and two broken keyboard keys. Yay me!

I'm RedRiding on the site, and I'm writing a YA dystopic novel. Fun. I've added anyone who's posted their names on this thread, I think the more people I'm accountable to the better! Add me!

GoldiChops · 03/11/2013 21:56

Stupid me. I'm RidingHood on there. Ooops. I was close though!

CallingAllEngels · 04/11/2013 07:58

Oops, life is getting in the way of nano - am not even at 1000 yet. Dealing with mc complications right now so worrying about that and ds seems to have picked up that something is up so is clinging to me like a limpet.

Must do better (mn nnc but easy to spot).

AtomicLyn · 04/11/2013 08:59

Engels Sorry about your mc. I had one in November 3 years ago which put an end to my NaNo... well, that wasn't exactly at the forefront of my mind, but it was part of the overall effect. Are you from the October 2011 due date club?

I'm finally not a slacker this year so now I can be a person you're all grrr at! I've always found if you write daily your word count naturally rises. I also like to stop when I know what's going to happen next so I can get back into it easily the next day. Except if you completely forget...!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 04/11/2013 09:43

So sorry about your mc, Engels x

ninah · 04/11/2013 10:17

Engels I am so sorry too. Nano is prob least of your worries. I'm going to still be writing long after Nano so if you fancy a word count support thread longer term on here I'd certainly be up for one, as I imagine would a few others writing a new book. Tunip?
There was one on here a while ago, and it was quite useful at this stage of proceedings ie filling up pages!
Take it easy on yourself.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 04/11/2013 10:31

Yes, I will be sticking around longer term. I'm not sure what's going to happen about my NaNo but whatever happens I have to write a first draft over the next few months.

Last year I started NaNo late and finished a few days late but I counted myself as winning because I didn't take longer than 30 days. There were people on last year's thread still cheering me on even after November which was lovely.

CallingAllEngels · 04/11/2013 12:12

Thanks ladies. Mc was 3 weeks ago but something is hanging on somewhere, despite scans showing nothing so have to go back to hospital tomorrow. Have an enormous backlog of work that has built up because I just can't concentrate on school and DS has now entered the terrible 2s and is kicking off (excellent timing DS, well done).

Yep, Atomic that's me (Are you who I think you are with a nc? Met you this summer/winter?)

I will try and get on with some writing (definitely have an hour inbetween blood test and hospital appt tomorrow) but right now (DS has just gone to bed but not sleeping yet) I need to sort some shit out for school. The more I leave it, the worse it gets.

Will be back when I have some nano action to report!

LoopaDaLoopa · 04/11/2013 13:46

Calling :( xxxx

ninah · 04/11/2013 13:55

you go, Engels!
mc is such a cruel thing, and so misunderstood. I was a zombie with mine (mmc so was waiting for it to happen..). Particularly difficult for you as it's still ongoing with all the hosp and stuff. My ds was 2 at the time, also. Sending you lots of good wishes.
I'm kind of in a similar boat tunip. I am not so fussed about nano but I need a draft! Last one is out there doing the rounds and this is number one of trilogy. The Fun One. I did start number three but that's The Grim One so I've put it off. Strictly speaking, it needs to be written in the Caribbean with room service and remedial dacquiris.

MysteriousHamster · 04/11/2013 19:15

Hello all, I'm NaNoing again this year. I've done it a handful of times over the last ten years, 'winning' about half the time. This year I'm being a rebel and continuing an existing project I actually did for Nano 2011 - where I wrote 50k and then promptly dropped it for something else I had to finish. I think the idea is worth seeing it through to the end, so hope I can manage it this November.

((hugs)) for Calling, I've been there, you have to be kind to yourself and not expect too much of yourself either. You might find writing a useful distraction, you might not, just see what happens.

Up to 7500 and quite pleased with that. I normally get ill at some point so I'm trying to build up a buffer zone.

ninah · 05/11/2013 00:07

7500 good heavens. Nice buffering!

TunipTheUnconquerable · 05/11/2013 09:24

Good morning, all.
I have nearly finished the creative writing book I was reading - just one more chapter to go - and have a better idea where I'm heading now.

Later today I might even actually write some words....

MysteriousHamster · 05/11/2013 11:39

Good thing I'm buffering, just remembered I've got to drive up north for a family do on Saturday, driving back Sun, so I'll probably end up doing nothing for the two days, ack!
