Anyone going to watch? I feel that Luke Costello is going to be a major letdown so I’m bracing myself!

I've set it to record so I'll watch tomorrow when dh is in work and DS in school

User56785 · 28/09/2025 17:53

What’s this now?

I definitely do not want my own idea of Luke Costello to be vanquished! 😵

DublinFemale · 28/09/2025 18:24

Luke Costello is played by Jay Duffy. I haven’t seen him in anything so hoping there is talent and not a nepo baby casting.

WatchingTheDetective · 28/09/2025 18:41

Arrgh can't it be watched in England? I have a fear of seeing Luke Costello after all my imaginings.

burnoutbabe · 28/09/2025 19:34

I have the rte app so shsll see if it appears there tomorrow

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 28/09/2025 19:40

I wonder when it will come to the BBC?

FabulousPharmacyst · 28/09/2025 19:42

Jay Duffy as in Keith’s son?

Magnalux · 28/09/2025 20:08

Looking forward to this, the only book I ever read twice was Rachel’s holiday. I hope they don’t make a dogs dinner of it!!

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 28/09/2025 20:15

I really hope it does the book(s?) justice.
I'm guessing it's mostly based on Rachel's Holiday, or will all the sisters' stories be included?
Luke Costello 🥰🤤

I was thinking of Joe Duffy. But you're probably right. Yes, all set to watch it here. I loved the books, and the clips they showed incessantly during 'The Traitors' looked promising. I've kicked DD and her boyfriend up to her room and I've taken command of the sitting room. I got the impression it might be a mishmash of all the sisters' stories.

drspouse · 28/09/2025 20:45

Ooohhhhh can I get the RTE app here (England) do you think?

JaneJeffer · 28/09/2025 20:49

Joe Duffy @Taytocrisps 😂

Another English person butting in here - sorry. I’ll be really interested to hear what you all make of it. I haven’t been convinced at all by the trailers, and Mammy Walsh in particular looks all wrong to me!

Magnalux · 28/09/2025 21:54

Yes I’m not sure about Carrie Crowley as mammy, I’ve always known her as a striking, glamorous tv presenter/actress certainly not Irish manmy vibes! But I’ll see, I can’t watch until the Ryder cup is over 🙄

burnoutbabe · 28/09/2025 21:57

I checked the app (I in england) and it shows it “on live” but can’t watch due to regional restrictions.

Jay Duffy was in Hollyoaks years ago. He played Brendan Brady (Emmet Scanlan) son.

Phase42 · 29/09/2025 07:58

I liked it - I do think the Mammy is not well cast. That is not how I envisioned her at all.
I think Rachel is very well played. I like that it is a mush mash of all their stories. I love that the Dad is this lovely quiet presence in the background.

honeyrider · 29/09/2025 23:16

I was looking forward to it but it was a big let down. I won't be watching the rest of it, very weak script and woeful acting.

WoodenBoat80 · 29/09/2025 23:23

I’m in England and managed to watch it, my husband streamed it somehow. I liked it a lot, tv shows can never be as good as the books. In my head Luke Costello has always looked abit like Billy Ray Cyrus. Rachel is spot on.

Taytocrisps · 30/09/2025 08:53

I really enjoyed the first episode. There was a lot of humour - the Dad sending his daughter the money for the music festival via Revolut and the Mam making little digs about her friend/neighbour being taken away for her wedding anniversary, even though it was just to Offaly.

The addiction scenes struck me as very convincing - Rachel minimizing her alcohol/drug intake and the consequences for herself and her loved ones.

I never realized that Anna was played by the same actress who played Orla in 'Derry Girls". I mean, I thought she looked vaguely familiar but didn't realize it was her.

And Aidan Quinn plays the Dad! Wow, he's aged a lot!

Really looking forward to Episode 2. The Guinness series, on the other hand, is pure shite. Or at least, the first two episodes are.

JaneJeffer · 30/09/2025 09:58

Nobody is the way I imagined them especially Luke who simply doesn’t have the charisma. The mother is far too elegant. They all have different accents which is annoying. There’s a very stressful atmosphere about the whole thing but I’ll watch it anyway.

I watched via a VPN. I was quite disappointed by how much they’ve changed to shoehorn two books into it

I was as well, I am also wondering if Rachel and Anna’s story is going to stay in Ireland, I’m sure a big part of the books take place in Newyork?
Also where the hell is Joey?

QueefofSheena · 01/10/2025 11:41

Looks like it’s going to stay in Ireland. I’m sure they were both set in NY too. I’ve just downloaded Rachel’s Holiday to re-read so I know the series is going to annoy me. I'll probably still watch though
