Anyone going to watch? I feel that Luke Costello is going to be a major letdown so I’m bracing myself!

Looks like it’s going to stay in Ireland. I’m sure they were both set in NY too. I’ve just downloaded Rachel’s Holiday to re-read so I know the series is going to annoy me. I'll probably still watch though

Have you read the sequel, Again Rachel and My favourite mistake? I really liked both of Rachel’s books.

Yes, I read them both recently and liked them.

I cannot find this on RTE player when I search - I have a vpn and I created an account but when I login to RTE player it says no results! Any ideas what I am doing wrong?? Thanks

HollyGolightly4 · 03/10/2025 20:54

Angels in LA too, that's Maggie's story.

I can't watch yet over here, but I did think Mammy was all wrong!

FlipFlopShopInHawaii · 03/10/2025 21:26

It is on RTÉ Player here, no.4 of the week - sounds like it's geo-blocked (honestly no idea if I'm right, or what I'm taking about!).

For UK viewers I believe BBC are showing it in Nov.

deeahgwitch · 05/10/2025 11:42

I’m watching but just as a tv series as I probably read one of the books ages ago and have no idea about them so no pre conceived ideas about how the characters should look.
Aren’t they loosely based on Marian Keyes own life ?
So far so good and it’s interesting to see different areas in Dublin being filmed, a bit like Bad Sisters, spotting places you know.
I can’t place where the Walsh family home is ?
Anyone know ?

Is it Sandymount or Cremore in Glasnevin ?????

sammylady37 · 05/10/2025 18:23

I’ll watch again tonight before deciding whether to continue with the rest of it or not. But I was a bit disappointed last week.
Carrie Crowley is wrongly cast, IMO.

Just caught up with episode two it is dire. The rehab place is ridiculous. Is it like that in the books?

MadeinBelfast · 06/10/2025 20:34

The books are brilliant. I thought the second episode was better than the first; they seem to be getting into character a bit more. Mammy Walsh is absolutely not how I imagined her though. I wish they'd been working with a Netflix budget for this rather than an RTE one!

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 06/10/2025 23:35

Just finding it all a bit dull!

the rehab place is a bit like that in the book Pasly but a lot funnier.

It's a long time since I read the books, but Marian Keyes is an alcoholic (albeit she has been sober for over 30 years) and attended a Rehab Centre herself. I'm assuming the book was based on her own experience. In the book, they brought in family members to discuss the impact of their loved ones' addictions. Also, I seem to remember that Rachel wasn't impressed when she discovered that there was a rota for cleaning. However, 'Rachel's Holiday' was written in '97. So the screenwriter(s) have had to update a lot of details in the books.

Taytocrisps · 07/10/2025 06:58

Also, for those who haven't read the books, each book focused on a different sister. However, they've mixed the events of some of the books up, which is probably throwing us readers off a little.

I really disliked the group ‘therapy’ session when they bring in Neil’s wife & confronted him with the fact that he was beating her up on a regular basis. No therapist would put the wife through that in front of a group.

The family just seem snarky with each other rather than playfully sarcastic

Magnalux · 12/10/2025 22:48

oh god I dunno if I can stick much more of it.. it’s absolute doom and gloom and misery. There’s the odd witty comment but it’s so depressing .

I wondered about that too.
Does that happen in therapy sessions ?
A partner of a group member is brought in to a group session.
I didn’t like how the psychiatrist was played.
I didn’t watch last night’s episode so can’t comment yet.

Phase42 · 13/10/2025 09:27

I fell asleep during it....a pity as I really loved the books

theaccidentaleconomist · 13/10/2025 10:09

I've never been to rehab but the toothache storyline seemed so unrealistic that I had to get a copy of the book to see what happened there.

In the book she is reluctantly given painkillers by the rehab centre, quite a lot of local anesthesia by the dentist and ends up having an impromptu root canal. Still unlikely he would just do one on the spot but much more likely than being left to suffer and having the tooth yanked out without anesthesia.

Everywhere looks so bizarrely empty as well. Could they not afford extras?

VaddaABeetch · 13/10/2025 13:54

It’s just boring now. Can’t engage with any of the characters.

deeahgwitch · 14/10/2025 09:29

I think the doctor turning up
out of nowhere all the time at the hospital- car park anyone - to chat with Claire is utterly daft.
I didn’t read all the books and most posters are of the opinion that the mother Walsh character isn’t as they imagined. Intrigued-what should she be like ?

bookworm14 · 14/10/2025 12:59

I haven’t seen the show as I’m in the UK, but in the books the mammy is much more of a traditional ‘Irish mammy’ character (and is based on MK’s own mum to an extent). The TV version from what I’ve seen looks too glamorous/middle class!

QueefofSheena · 16/10/2025 06:14

I’m watching as a separate TV series too as they have changed so much. Luke in particular is all wrong and he was such a huge character that they have done him dirty. Nothing to do with the actor, although he’s not the Luke in my head.

sammylady37 · 16/10/2025 06:21

Have just caught up with the third episode. It’s not doing the books any justice at all. Even Aidan Quinn isn’t saving it. Some of the characters are very wooden. Mammy Walsh is the biggest disappointment, she’s totally miscast.

deeahgwitch · 16/10/2025 08:44

Thank you @bookworm14for replying.

Phase42 · 19/10/2025 10:06

Mammy Walsh should be more eager, more breathless, more rushing around, more red shiny face, hair escaping, wiping her floury hands on whatever is around, more shocked looks at what the girls might be wearing, more looks to one sister about what another sister has said, more judgemental intakes of breath, more 'who said Mass?' references, more 'what will the neighbours say?'....someone who looks like Brenda Fricker. I haven't read the books in a long time but that would have been how I pictured her.

VaddaABeetch · 19/10/2025 13:18

I think the issue with Manmy Walsh is she’s a character from 30 years ago. Rachel would now be the age Mammy Walsh was in the book.
