£203 for a day of work - thought I'd share for those who fancy it

I do this a lot but thought I'd share for those who may not be aware - it's a long day (very long!) but easy money

Councils are currently recruiting for polling clerks. The pay is £183 for the day (obviously 4th May!) plus £20 for the easy online training.

Just fill in the form online, no interview required, position allocated to you within a day or so.

I don't actually 'work' for the council! I run my own business but I do this when I can as it's nice and easy - although long!

Any questions, just ask away and I'll see if I can answer

Couldn't really be arsed with that tbh... A 16 hour day, and only about £12 an hour too. I would do it for £500 maybe. Prefer £600+ For £180-200? No. I'd be bored shitless.

That's nice dear

Thank you for sharing

Iwasafool · 20/04/2023 19:30

I did it once, the longest most boring day of my life. We'd eaten our lunches by about 10 am and had all our food and drink by lunch time. If it hadn't been for the lovely policewoman who went to the shop and stocked us up we'd have been very hungry by the end of the day. Thanks Yvonne.

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 19:30

@DannyZukosSmile I deliberately posted this in the cost of living section as I sometimes see people desperate to make a few quid relatively quickly

You can post what you like but to state yeah you'd be so BORED but meh, you might do it for 600 quid is just crass tbh

Wow, you're a delight. Snobbish and privileged to boot, you clearly just wanted to point out that you could have done it but it wasn't worth your precious time. Lovely position to be in, I'm sure. Did you spot that this is the Cost of Living section?

LMFAO at the irony of this, from someone who won't do it herself! 😂

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 19:31

@DannyZukosSmile no you also can't read properly

@darjeelingrose CANT do it. Not won't. There's a difference

Anyway, this was supposed to be a thread which potentially could help a couple of people out so I will just ignore your unhelpful contributions

If you only wanted people to respond who were super excited about it, and if you wanted people to clap and cheer and thank you, and didn't want any remotely negative comments about it, you should have said in your opening post.

I can see I am upsetting you by saying I am not interested, as it's not very good pay for such a long day. I mean God forbid I should have my own opinion, and an opinion that you don't like. I'll leave you to it as you are clearly slighted and wounded by opinions you don't want to hear.

SpringLobelia · 20/04/2023 19:34

well I am totally up for it. i used to watch the vote count on behalf of a political party (as a volunteer) and loved the whole process so I am certainly going to pursue it. Not least because I am on a brief career break for reasons beyond my control and can do with some cash.

Iwasafool · 20/04/2023 19:34

I don't think it is pointless to warn people it is a long boring day and it is a good idea to take plenty of snacks and drinks, a cushion maybe a book.

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 19:34

Oh bless you 😂

Dammit just searched and for my local council the closing date for applications was 4 days ago!

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 19:35

@Iwasafool oh it's so boring and very long. Definitely bring a book and lots of food and drinks.

My mum used to do it when I was a teen, she worked for the local council, used to take a day as leave and work as a presiding officer. She always gave me her day’s pay, bless her ❤️ I remember it feeling like a fortune!

You have misunderstood, it's not an "opinion" sort of post. But it's obvious from the blustering that you realise you are coming over as a bit of a prat, (reading won't for can't, really?) so I'll just leave it at that. You know what they say about holes and digging.

I would worry about the new photo ID requirements. Is there any training on how to verify the photo ID? Or what to do if you think it's fake, or stolen? Or indeed what to do when people show up without any.

Hope it goes well for everyone doing this this year.

Baabaa75 · 20/04/2023 19:55

lljkk · 20/04/2023 18:11

I applied weeks ago, they didn't take me on.

I used to count overnight but i was so bad at it that my tablemates had to recount everything I did. Mortifying. Not signing up for that again.

Helpful 😳🙄 so if you can't count don't bother applying 🤷

Mykingdomforanap · 20/04/2023 19:56

A lady from my work does this and is always on my section to vote. I imagine it’s against our contracts to take a day off to work else where so she was 😬when I first saw her. Luckily can keep a secret.

SweetSakura · 20/04/2023 19:59

I've done this several times, definitely worth sharing. It's an interesting day and nice feeling part of the elections.
I think we've already done our training for people this year, but people could register an interest for future elections

I am doing it this year and in my training we were told that unless it is really obvious that the ID is wrong then we'd need to accept it. Luckily I'm only going to be a Poll Clerk so it won't be my responsibility to turn anyone away.

IneedanewTV · 20/04/2023 20:11

My council is still needing polling clerks.

malapast · 20/04/2023 20:13

When I and many others turn up and refuse to show photo id in protest at electoral gerrymandering by the Tories how will you treat me ?

Can I ask a question? My photo IDs are in my unmarried name. There is a long story why i never changed things. However I am on the electoral roll in my married name. This issue comes up whever I open a new bank account and I just bring along my marriage certificate as well and it is always okay. Do you happen to know if this will be accepted? Some places get their knickers in a twist about it (a recent workplace for example) even though it is perfectly obvious the iDs match.

Sorry- not to derail but I have been wondering about it.

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 20:17

@malapast dunno. How do you want me to treat you? I'll be there just to carry out a role so if you want to make that difficult then crack on

OP posts:
BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 20:17

@SpringLobelia I think you'll be absolutely fine with that ID

OP posts:
malapast · 20/04/2023 20:18

Well I will demand to vote with my voting card as I have for the past 40 years.
