£203 for a day of work - thought I'd share for those who fancy it

I do this a lot but thought I'd share for those who may not be aware - it's a long day (very long!) but easy money

Councils are currently recruiting for polling clerks. The pay is £183 for the day (obviously 4th May!) plus £20 for the easy online training.

Just fill in the form online, no interview required, position allocated to you within a day or so.

I don't actually 'work' for the council! I run my own business but I do this when I can as it's nice and easy - although long!

Any questions, just ask away and I'll see if I can answer

I've sent a link to student DD for my local council but am going to assume places are filled for the May election.

HurryShadow · 20/04/2023 18:26

My Dad used to do this. He always got given a tiny little polling station in a village church that didn't even have a bathroom, so they had to bring in a portaloo for the day! They only had about 20 people in the area registered to vote and not all of them turned up. Even if all 20 turned up by 9am they had to stay open all day. I think my Dad just used to take a good book or two!

Snowjokes · 20/04/2023 18:26

I did this at the last election. It was the first time I’d read a whole book since my children were born 😂. I’m sure other roles are very busy, but Poll Clerk in a small rural constituency was very very quiet!

MandyMotherOfBrian · 20/04/2023 18:30

I imagine it used to be easy money, I’m not sure I’d want to be doing it this time though considering the amount of people who will be turning up without Photo ID and/or not even realising they need it….

SconesJamthenCream · 20/04/2023 18:33

Weget paid £40 for training at £240 for a parish and district election.

I really enjoy it, like PP I am in a smallish village so it can be a bit boring at times but wow, the opportunity to get bored is a lovely change!Wink

Yes think we'll be having a few moments this year over ID.

hoppalong · 20/04/2023 18:37

Thank you, just applied!

HarrietStyles · 20/04/2023 18:42

Thanks for this, I’ve just registered with my local council 👍🏽

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 18:43

@hoppalong you're welcome. Good luck

Its not going to be for everyone of course but if you can find the time for a long day and fancy the extra cash then it's worth a go

Can't find ours online 😕 can find every other councils ha ha

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 20/04/2023 18:52

It's definitely a good gig. I've been doing it for about 5 years and have my first role as Presiding Officer this year. That is £340 for a days work. Plus as I work for the council I still get paid from my regular job and don't need to take leave.

SpringLobelia · 20/04/2023 18:53

Thanks for this. I shall certainly apply.

Eattheeel · 20/04/2023 18:56

Wow, the pay varies! Here (in the South East) it's £155 for 16 hours, and no payment for the training.

Exactly why I'm not doing it this year. Usually it's pretty uneventful but having to turn people away without ID isn't likely to be much fun.

BonnieGlasses · 20/04/2023 19:11

Councils in England and Wales, you mean.

EmmaEmerald · 20/04/2023 19:12

Thanks OP
I wish it was split into two
I have an old back injury so can't do 15 hours
i'd find it interesting but it's probably a job only people with 100% health can do

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 20/04/2023 19:15

I had a relative who used to do it. Because our County Council area is quite rural she would often have a long drive to the Polling Station adding a couple of hours to the day but she loved to do it.

HurdyGurdy19 · 20/04/2023 19:15

I have been a polling clerk at two local elections, and a general election and done an overnight count.

I just suggest that if you do get a role, then take a cushion with you! The chairs have always been hard, and I have come away with the numbest bum ever!

DannyZukosSmile · 20/04/2023 19:18

Couldn't really be arsed with that tbh... A 16 hour day, and only about £12 an hour too. I would do it for £500 maybe. Prefer £600+ For £180-200? No. I'd be bored shitless.

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 19:20

@DannyZukosSmile it's not compulsory for you to do it ...

@BonnieGlasses when I posted, I didn't stop to think about every single permutation of those who couldn't do it for whatever reason ...

I just shared in good faith as it could well help someone.

I never said it was. Confused I'm posting my views and opinions on a thread on a message forum. That OK with you is it? Hmm

darjeelingrose · 20/04/2023 19:25

Really good idea, thanks for sharing. I can't do it myself, but I'm going to pass the idea on to a good friend.

BatFaceOwl · 20/04/2023 19:27

@darjeelingrose fingers crossed it suits them!

Wow, you're a delight. Snobbish and privileged to boot, you clearly just wanted to point out that you could have done it but it wasn't worth your precious time. Lovely position to be in, I'm sure. Did you spot that this is the Cost of Living section?
