I am furious at retailer hiding plastic bags

I am not sure if I can name the discount retailer. I have always found it odd that many branches of this retailer I shop in always have no plastic bags for sale. They always pushing their £1 bags. This happened in all 4 of their branches I shop in. Now I have discovered stores hide the plastic bags and tell customers plastic bags sold out to push £1 bags as all stores have a target of £1 bags they have to sell.

I have brought £1 bags myself sometimes as I have forgotten my bags. I am furious, it's bad enough they put the price of plastic bags up to 30p recently but to hide them in the cost of living and punish shoppers who may have forgotten their bags is disgusting. I threatened to complain to head office and the sales assistant told me head office staff encourage it. Apparently head office said they have to hit the target by any means necessary. Has anyone else experienced this? Can I name the retailer here?

You must forget them a fair bit if you know all 4 branches you shop in do this. If it annoys you, just always remember to take your bags in future.

Ayeitsme · 17/02/2023 17:44

They should just phase the cheap ones out anyway.

MelaniesFlowers · 17/02/2023 17:46

While I think it’s disgusting plastic bags aren’t free anymore, it is unfortunately their choice to do this and they aren’t doing anything wrong.

They don’t have to offer you bags at all.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 17/02/2023 17:46

My local Waitrose does this

Coffeellama · 17/02/2023 17:46

Furious is really extreme. Do they actually lie and say they don’t have plastic bags when you ask normally?

WhisperingAutistic · 17/02/2023 17:47

Is it Home Bargains? The one where I live does that.

MrNook · 17/02/2023 17:49

Why would you not be able to name them?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 17/02/2023 17:49

How hard is it to take a bag with you?

I forgot bags twice and that's when I noticed they didn't have plastic bags. Since then I always checked if plastic bags are available. Other customers also have noticed and one customer was shouting at the poor sales assistant saying things like you never have plastic bags and you always hide them. At another branch the sales assistant told me about the target. The customer was right, they hide the plastic bags. The retailer is Poundland. I shop there regularly. Very disappointed in them.

Sports Direct? Always trying to upsell their hideous giant bags!

fari2014 · 17/02/2023 17:50

The retailer is Poundland.

"Furious" seems a bit over the top. Just remember your own bags

As476 · 17/02/2023 17:52

I knew you were going to say poundland. I’ve noticed this but didn’t think they were hiding them.

I don’t always have a bag with me especially if I’ve been sent out to get bits for work without notice.

Undertheoldlindentree · 17/02/2023 17:52

Seems very devious when they promote themselves as a budget option.

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/02/2023 17:57

Just ask, they need to make money so are upwelling. Furious is rather an extrapolation.

CannibalQueen · 17/02/2023 17:59

My issue with bags is having to pay for paper ones! The 'tax' on plastic bags was to encourage us to keep them out of landfill and reuse them, because they didn't compost for centuries, but paper bags break up very easily so the excuse isn't there. But wow, were shops quick to bung a charge on to the paper bags as well.....

holierthanthou73 · 17/02/2023 17:59

Take your own and get a grip. It’s unbelievable what people find to get furious about.

LookingOldTheseDays · 17/02/2023 18:00

Yes it's devious, but if you don't want to spend on bags then even the cheap ones are a waste of your money. Stick a couple or plastic bags in your handbag so you always have one to hand.

Do you get off on virtue signalling?!

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 17/02/2023 18:02

Fucking Poundland!! "Oh we haven't got any normal bags" but obviously they have the ghastly £1 bags.

They have changed too much, charging too much and the clothes are fugly.

I go to B&M now

Yeah, it’s ridiculous. The Spar near work used to sell plastic bags for 30p, more than happy to pay (I’d often end up buying more than I’d planned) and they were the perfect size for my small bins. Now they charge over £1 for a paper bag 🙄.

BentleyRhythmAce · 17/02/2023 18:04

I'm more furious about single use plastic still being an option, TBH.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 17/02/2023 18:06

Bought not brought, surely? Bit confusing how you've written it. It's a nuisance re the bags, but there it is. We should all be using less plastic anyway.

Why on earth is it disgusting that plastic bags aren't free? They absolutely should be chargeable! The amount of plastic kept out of landfill since the charge came in is absolutely staggering.

Yes that's exactly what they do.
