I am furious at retailer hiding plastic bags

I am not sure if I can name the discount retailer. I have always found it odd that many branches of this retailer I shop in always have no plastic bags for sale. They always pushing their £1 bags. This happened in all 4 of their branches I shop in. Now I have discovered stores hide the plastic bags and tell customers plastic bags sold out to push £1 bags as all stores have a target of £1 bags they have to sell.

I have brought £1 bags myself sometimes as I have forgotten my bags. I am furious, it's bad enough they put the price of plastic bags up to 30p recently but to hide them in the cost of living and punish shoppers who may have forgotten their bags is disgusting. I threatened to complain to head office and the sales assistant told me head office staff encourage it. Apparently head office said they have to hit the target by any means necessary. Has anyone else experienced this? Can I name the retailer here?

I can't believe this is still a thing.
Feck me my elderly mother can remember to take her bags with her, growing up my gran managed too. It's part of getting ready to go shopping. I don't go anywhere without a bag it's not hard.
Funny that some people think taking bags with you is "virtue signalling" (I REALLY don't think my gran in the 70's was virtue signalling) I'd say deliberately not taking them and feeling entitlement to a cheap wasteful plastic bag is bloody selfishness.

TheLostGiraffe · 17/02/2023 19:19

Other customers also have noticed and one customer was shouting at the poor sales assistant

Wow. Over plastic bags? And "furious"? Bit extreme!?!

Maverickess · 17/02/2023 19:24

What is it with people creating issues and a big fuss about them? There is literally no issue here, none.
Take your bags or buy one if you forget, take some responsibility for yourself and get a grip FFS.

WandaWonder · 17/02/2023 19:30

If you're that furious over a bag shop elsewhere or remember your own

Yeah, see, comments like this just make me want to continually buy the rolls of plastic bags off Amazon 😂

😆

Itsallyellow22 · 17/02/2023 19:32

The option for plastic bags shouldn’t exist anymore.

This

purser25 · 17/02/2023 19:38

The easiest thing to do is to keep a bag in your handbag or bags in the car

@MelaniesFlowers
Yeah, that really would teach us all a lesson. Are you a child??
Christ there's some lazy entitled brats out there.

I knew it was going to be Poundland!
They try it on every time I go but soon find me a normal carrier bag when I say no I'm not buying a £1 bag iwill just leave the stuff instead!

Have you considered taking a bag with you?

SeeYouNextTLol · 17/02/2023 20:05

Think of it as a fine for forgetting them. They really need to stop all plastic some how.

SeeYouNextTLol · 17/02/2023 20:06

I forget but I’m more pissed for environment

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 17/02/2023 21:19

I do forget bags it's another ADHD tax, but they do get reused eventually until they fall apart and end up in the recycling. However its a drop in the ocean regarding pollution. Us reusing bags and paper straws and paper bags is like trying to drain the ocean with a pint glass.

Unless countries like the USA, China and Russia reduces pollution, the planet is fucked. You only need to look at the Ohio train derailment which has caused an environmental disaster after they burned the materials that's used to make plastic ""The train was carrying five chemicals that are used in plastic manufacturing, including vinyl chloride, a known carcinogenic that is highly flammable"" thousands of animals are dead, the water is polluted, I saw a video of a residents who lives near the derailment pouring milk into her coffee and it sizzled. A chemical reaction

SpringingIntoSpringAgain · 17/02/2023 21:35

Can't get worked up over bag charges!

Brefugee · 17/02/2023 21:41

that is such a bollocks argument. It's lovely here since plastic bags have all but disappeared we don't get farmers telling us how many lambs or other livestock they've lost to plastic bags, or see them decorating the trees after a high wind.

It is entirely possible to try to cut down on your own personal consumption/use of plastic AND to lobby governments to do something about emissions.

leccybill · 17/02/2023 21:51

Many here saying pop one in your handbag. Most people I know (including me) don't really use a handbag much anymore. I use my phone to pay for things.

I popped out of work today to get a box of chocs and ended up buying a few bits in Poundland, unplanned. I just asked the one woman manning 6 self service tills for a bag and she gave me one.

AlwaysLatte · 17/02/2023 21:54

Shops shouldn't sell cheap plastic bags imo. Just encourages people to not take their own. If they were always £1 it would help people remember to take their own (myself included)

Youpillock · 17/02/2023 22:05

Shesasuperfreak · 17/02/2023 18:30

Its Poundland isn't it!!!
Now if I forget a bag, I will buy bin bags and use one of them for my shopping.

Your powers of deduction are astonishing Sherlock...

I agree
I'm sure they'll be phased out eventually

I do understand the local environmental impact of getting rid of free bags, and I'm happy to pay for reusable bags, as they do get used eventually. I didn't say anything about reversing the changes, it's just putting it into perspective.

There's another what 6/7 billion people polluting the planet. Environmental disasters like Ohio, happening right now, because the train company skimped on maintinance despite making billions in profit. Thats what pisses me off. Unless countries who have hundres of millions of citizens start pulling their fingers out their arses, the planet is fucked and us worrying about plastic bags will seem frivolous and superficial. It doesn't mean we should stop what we're doing regarding things like straws, plastic bags and stuff.

Indáirire · 17/02/2023 23:25

Why are people so weird? Bring your own bags from home and if you forget, you just have to suck it up and pay for a bag for life. Only a pound, for goodness sake. It's fantastic that we're cutting down on single use plastic.

AlmostSummer21 · 18/02/2023 00:25

Howtohideasausage · 17/02/2023 18:26

The option for plastic bags shouldn’t exist anymore.

The need for bags for wet things/dirty things/rubbish isn't going to vanish. The only thing that's changing is having to buy different bags, such as bin liners.

Bags for life are great & have their uses, so do fabric totes etc. but they don't replace the 101 uses of carrier bags.

UKNZKiwiBrit · 18/02/2023 00:26

userno777 · 17/02/2023 18:46

You are being ridiculous.

Well, that certainly helps the conversation.

itswednesdayy · 18/02/2023 00:30

The thing is, they do offer a free alternative of you bringing your own bag instead. Free is better from a cost of living perspective.

They might be phasing out the single use cheaper carrier bags - they don’t actually have to have these on sale. Therefore they aren’t really doing anything shady by only having the £1 bags available to purchase. It acts as an incentive to use your own.
