I am furious at retailer hiding plastic bags

I am not sure if I can name the discount retailer. I have always found it odd that many branches of this retailer I shop in always have no plastic bags for sale. They always pushing their £1 bags. This happened in all 4 of their branches I shop in. Now I have discovered stores hide the plastic bags and tell customers plastic bags sold out to push £1 bags as all stores have a target of £1 bags they have to sell.

I have brought £1 bags myself sometimes as I have forgotten my bags. I am furious, it's bad enough they put the price of plastic bags up to 30p recently but to hide them in the cost of living and punish shoppers who may have forgotten their bags is disgusting. I threatened to complain to head office and the sales assistant told me head office staff encourage it. Apparently head office said they have to hit the target by any means necessary. Has anyone else experienced this? Can I name the retailer here?

Fucking Poundland!! "Oh we haven't got any normal bags" but obviously they have the ghastly £1 bags.

They have changed too much, charging too much and the clothes are fugly.

I go to B&M now

Everything has gone up in Poundland. Many of their items are more expensive then supermarkets.

Ahhh makes sense now I no it’s Poundland, I just figured they were probably going out of business never having proper bags in. Still not something to be so enraged about though, motivation to remember your bags! They don’t have to provide cheaper ones at all.

CakeCrumbs44 · 17/02/2023 18:14

I am more annoyed that half the stuff in Poundland now costs more than £1. That's the whole point of Poundland! They should change the name.

Headabovetheparakeet · 17/02/2023 18:14

Why would they hide them? They're not obliged to sell them at all.

I'm more furious about single use plastic still being an option, TBH.

Single use???

proper old fashioned carrier bags were never single use! They were perfect for so many things! Used over & over.

now I'm having to buy bags to take things to friends, forvwet swimming gear, to take stuff to the charity shop.

I really am not seeing the advantage of not using carrier bags.

Brefugee · 17/02/2023 18:16

frankly? you should be furious that they still have plastic bags at all.
How difficult is it to get one of those bags that folds into a pouch, and then when you've used it, just put it straight back in your handbag?

Iris1976 · 17/02/2023 18:16

My local The Works does this too

Not everyone carries a handbag, and sometimes you buy more than will fit in one bag.

Poundland has always been more expensive as they have products specifically manufactured at smaller sizes (alongside other discount retailers).

So although it feels cheaper you’re getting less toothpaste for your £1. I know because they used to be a client of mine.

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 17/02/2023 18:23

Are you really that furious over a bag
to the point you had a go at a sales assistant and threatened to call head office and then wrote a post on mumsnet. What's it like to live such a blessed and privileged life that you let a bag consume so much of your time and energy

Exactly! A few years ago I’d been staying with my parents over Christmas and needed an extra bag for some bits and pieces. My mum gave me an Asda bag that had been used for storing Christmas decs in.

It was a revelation! Thick plastic, looked almost untouched. It was from the mid-90s and was still going strong almost 20 years later!

No one I know used them as one use; they were swimming bags, PE bags, lunch bags, dirty trainer bags, bin liners (for at least 4/5 weeks). Now, as you say, I still need most of those things but just end up spending money on bin liners etc. I probably use more plastic now, the only difference is I’m
paying for it.

Its pointless anyway. I went to Hong Kong a few years ago; every day we were given a fresh set of toiletries (wrapped in plastic), a new (plastic) toothbrush every day. I went to one shop that sold collectibles of a character I love. I bought about 30 things; each one (even pens and key rings) was carefully wrapped in an individual plastic wrapper.

Howtohideasausage · 17/02/2023 18:26

The option for plastic bags shouldn’t exist anymore.

Gatehouse77 · 17/02/2023 18:26

Our Aldi does that because they were being stolen. However, they don’t push the sale of any bags from what I’ve seen.

This!

RudsyFarmer · 17/02/2023 18:26

ive recently noticed there’s no longer any bags available to put loose fruit and veg in at the supermarket. It’s such a bloody ball ache. Just give us some small paper bags for god sake.

bellac11 · 17/02/2023 18:28

Shops are not a public service, they dont have to do anyone any favours.

Do you get off on virtue signalling?!

Eh?

How is telling someone to remember to take their own bags virtue signaling ?

It's the blindingly obvious solution to an unnecessary problem

Shesasuperfreak · 17/02/2023 18:30

Its Poundland isn't it!!!
Now if I forget a bag, I will buy bin bags and use one of them for my shopping.

BingleBongleBoo · 17/02/2023 18:33

Furious? Blimey.
Get some real problems it's only a carrier bag

woodhill · 17/02/2023 18:35

Just bring your own bags

MrsCarson · 17/02/2023 18:41

WhisperingAutistic · 17/02/2023 17:47

Is it Home Bargains? The one where I live does that.

I was thinking them too.

Crostimosti · 17/02/2023 18:43

They can sell whatever they like, at whatever price they like.

You can shop there or not.

It's not up to them to provide cheap or free bags. If somewhere does, great. If it doesn't and that doesn't suit you either remember bags or shop elsewhere.

This isn't me being arsey although it reads that way, it's just how it is!

userno777 · 17/02/2023 18:44

MelaniesFlowers · 17/02/2023 17:46

While I think it’s disgusting plastic bags aren’t free anymore, it is unfortunately their choice to do this and they aren’t doing anything wrong.

They don’t have to offer you bags at all.

Are you serious?? The world is drowning in plastic. It's brilliant that shops aren't giving away plastic bags. I haven't bought a plastic bag for about 2 years.

I agree. Leave some in the back of the car. Have a foldable one in your handbag. Or just remember a bag. No doubt you remember your purse, phone and keys, so just add shopping bag to that list. I never go out without a shopping bag now, and if I do, I either don't buy anything or grudgingly buy a bag for life. But that's my faut when it happens.

And I manage without having to buy lots of other plastic bags. The only time it is a bit annoying is when I want to take something to the charity shop. I don't keep changing the bags in the wastepaper bins, just empty them.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 17/02/2023 18:44

Really? Do you have anger issues in general? I mean if I was really struggling I might be a bit cross with myself for forgetting a bag, but furious? Gosh, I save that for the big stuff. Now you want to talk about the massive profits the big energy companies are making whilst their customers are shivering in their homes? That's what makes me furious. Not having to pay £1 for something that I wouldn't need, had I been a bit more organised.
