How long do you have heating on?

Hello anyone reading,

It's very cold at the moment. Our living room loses a lot of heat, but during the day I have the thermostat set to 17 degrees. It's cold but I'm trying to save monies. However the heating still kicks in consistently during the day to even keep it at that. I put it to 20.5 usually around 4pm until about 11pm as I need a bit of cosiness during the evening.
As a result our heating is on for roughly 9 hours a day during these freezing days, how long is yours on for?

P.s we have a nest smart heating system.

An hour and a half in the morning. 5 hours in the evening.

Then 3 or 4 hours in the evening starting from 4 when the DC get in from school.

We had increased it to 8 hours total a day during this cold however the smart meter showed this was costing £22 a day so just reduced it back to one hour am and pm. House is currently 13.5 degrees

All day long at the moment, set to 19c. Interestingly it does go off for short periods of time in the evening, I suppose because the curtains are closed, and it's built up some heat during the day.

Actually the last two days, it has been on and off more frequently, because we are lucky in that the sun has been out and is warming the front of the house.

All day. Dreading the bill coming but I'm frozen and don't function well in the cold at all, plus I've come down with an awful virus. I don't know what will happen if the bill is so high I can't pay it but what will be will be.

30 mins at 7am and 30 mins at 5pm. House is set up so if it drops below 15.5 heating comes on for a short period but doesn’t happen very often

Pretty much all the time, if it goes off and it’s chilly I put it back on.

Thermostat at 16 most of the day (if at home) and down to 13 at night.

All day with two young DC's and the fact that it probably cost more to keep turning it down and up than having it at one set temp.
What will be will be but I'm not prepared to risk ill health damage to my home such as mould damp burst pipes that will end up costing more than heating it.

Have you got smart meters?
It's pretty easy to keep track if you do.

All the time on. Once the temperature reaches a set level , it stops automatically anyways. I only switch it off when go outside.

thermostat set at 19 at the moment so the house is fairly warm

It stays at that temp all day / night I don’t bother switching it on or off unless it will do it automatically

costing around 5 a day with BG on a smart meter pre pay type so I can see accurately the daily cost

All the time, set on 18 degrees. Sometimes it switches itself off. On prepayment, I topped it up today £40, lasts week (ish).

2 hours in the morning, 4 in the evening. Thermostat set to 16 degrees during the day when it’s ‘off’. We have underfloor heating downstairs which is a bag of inefficient poop, DH whacked it on at 10am earlier this week and the room temperature had gone up by less than a degree by 4pm.

7am to 10.30pm, Thermostat is set to 18, it’s a small, warm terraced house with neighbours in during day on both sides. Good insulation, double glazing on north facing front of house, thermostatic valves throughout house ( except room thermostat is in) It’s definitely been kicking in more over the past few days, especially when the temperature drops outside in the evening, but it’s not constantly roaring away. We turn the thermostat down if we are going to be significantly out during the day or particularly active like the housework burst I did yesterday

Thermostat is set to 18 between 7.30am and 9pm, at 14 overnight. The heating will pop on to bring the temperature up as and when needed - according to our Nest stats, that's been between 4 and 5 hours a day on average the past week or so. We live in a small mid-terrace house so once the house heats up it does usually stay reasonably warm.

No, unfortunately not. I'll look in to one for sure though. I just tried to get info from British gas but as they are moving their systems so they can't tell me anything until mid January 🙃

Recently cold spell 6 hours a day. Has been set to 18/18.5 through the day and at 20 for 2 hrs in the evening.
However my elderly mum has just come out of hospital, she lives with us, so I have changed the thermostat to 20 all day now so god know how long we'll need the heating on to sustain that!

Fair enough!
I guess you could just take daily (or whatever timescale you like) meter readings and work it out that way if your meter isn't a faff to access.

All day downstairs and all night in the toddler's bedrooms. Not looking forward to the bill coming in but can't cope with being cold!

All day at the moment from 0600 to 2300. When it's not as cold as it is now its usually set to 0600-0830 and 1500-2300. No thermostat, we just turn it up / down depending on how it feels.

An hour in the morning, 30 mins at 3.30ish as the sun goes down and the temp drops, and an hour at 6ish. DH and I are naturally warm people so don’t like it on too much, the afternoon slot is mainly for the dogs benefit! We light the fire in the evening and he sleeps in front of that.
