How long do you have heating on?

Hello anyone reading,

It's very cold at the moment. Our living room loses a lot of heat, but during the day I have the thermostat set to 17 degrees. It's cold but I'm trying to save monies. However the heating still kicks in consistently during the day to even keep it at that. I put it to 20.5 usually around 4pm until about 11pm as I need a bit of cosiness during the evening.
As a result our heating is on for roughly 9 hours a day during these freezing days, how long is yours on for?

P.s we have a nest smart heating system.

When WFH I'll have it on all day but then turn it off around 7pm as then I'll sit on the sofa under a blanket whilst reading or watching TV. I never have the heating on overnight.

Minikievs · 16/12/2022 20:05

2 hours in the morning.
I could cut this to 1.5 or even one hour though-eldest DC is only up for half an hour before leaving. Youngest DC and I are up for an hour before we leave. I'm in the office all day, all arrive home about 7pm

3 hours in the evening.
It's off this evening though as I've had the tumbler on twice, washer on three times and dishwasher on. I can't afford heating on tonight too.
No one has complained it's cold.

When heating is on, it's set to 18. Never actually reaches this temperature though!

Many blocks of flats soley have under floor heating. It used to warm ours perfectly in fact too hot!
Tto this day those blocks only have UFH

skippingthroughthedaisies · 16/12/2022 20:14

30 mins in the morning then 5-7pm in the evening. We have 2 small oil filled heaters for during the day if we’re in. The logburner gets lit about 4pm but it only heats the living room so it’s a cold dash to bed. Luckily our house is insulated quite well

Pootle40 · 16/12/2022 20:17

@pompei8309 lots of modern homes are built with only underfloor heating so your info is out of date

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 16/12/2022 20:17

I turned my thermostat up to about 13 for a couple of hours this morning. Then turned it down again once I'd warmed up.

Did the same for an hour at 4pm because I needed a bath and didn't want to turn into an icicle when I got out.

We had increased it to 8 hours total a day during this cold however the smart meter showed this was costing £22 a day so just reduced it back to one hour am and pm. House is currently 13.5 degrees

How the hell are people meant to manage when something as basic as energy is costing so much.

ithoughtitmihtbenicetochat · 16/12/2022 20:18

One hour a day central heating, 10 mins electric fire in the room we get dressed in during the morning rush,
How is anyone affording more?!

Itsallyellow22 · 16/12/2022 20:21

16 overnight, 18 during day, 19 evening

ithoughtitmihtbenicetochat · 16/12/2022 20:25

My one hour a day central heating is 6-7pm so the kids can get showered etc

Wheretheskyisblue · 16/12/2022 20:27

This week our boiler has been running from between 7 and 9 hours a day to keep the house at 18 degrees between 6am and 9pm.

How long do you have heating on?

Depends on budget. We've used more than that and our gas is costing about £2.50 a day including sc. It's only a few months where it's going to be that high. Electric is £40 a month but we use about th same year round.

MrsPnut · 16/12/2022 20:46

Ours is set to 16c for an hour in the morning, then 15c for the day rising to 19c at 5:30 before dropping to 13c from 8:30 until 6am.
Whilst the weather has been freezing the heating has been on a lot but we at £1400 in credit and I hate being cold. We have foot thick stone walls and we need to keep them warm to keep the house warm.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/12/2022 20:47

UFH is lovely, I've stayed in lots of places where that's the only heating and it's properly toasty!

Abraxan · 16/12/2022 20:47

Thermostat is set to 16c during the day and overnight, when we are at work, and 21c in a morning and late afternoon/evening. If we are in during the day then it gets out in if it's cold. We have a nest system so we don't set specific times for the heating, just ideal temperatures for key times.

Dh has been working from home 3 days this week and the windows have been out on each floor over those days so heating was on a lot - snowy December is not the ideal timing for putting in new windows throughout! Then I've been ill the last 2 days and home in bed, so heating been on a lot then too. I feel very fortunate that we can do that.

dandelionthistle · 16/12/2022 20:53

I turn mine on for an hour or two in the evening (so it's warm for DCs' baths). Luckily my flat runs pretty warm.

In these temperatures last winter I'd have put it on for a bit first thing, and maybe sometimes mid-afternoon, but I'm trying not to do that with the cost as it is. I might never go back to putting it on in the morning - I'm up and moving and getting ready and drinking hot coffee etc so actually it's only briefly unpleasant, probably the same amount of time it'd take for the radiators to warm the place up anyway.

JorisBonson · 16/12/2022 20:56

We've both had covid for a week and it's been on pretty constantly since. Turned the smart meter off. I don't need that sort of negativity in my life 😂

NewBootsAndRanty · 16/12/2022 15:03

Have you got smart meters?
It's pretty easy to keep track if you do.

Same as in no smart meter

with bulb moving to octopus as and when they move us

was £11 a day last month at £354 which was omfg

dreading dec to Jan as been on a lot more due to temps being -5/6/7 and bloody cold

Wish the snow would melt

it’s on maybe 2/3hr am and then off if can 10/3 and back on when dd home from school

but school ended today so know will have on a lot more next two weeks

zestysparkles · 16/12/2022 21:01

We haven't had ours on hardly at all, it's very cold. Coping with multiple pairs of socks, duvet and blankets.

We flicked on for a couple of hours when we had guests and the cost was astronomical.

CheesenCrackersmm · 16/12/2022 21:02

Earlier this month about 1.5 hours of a morning and the same in the evening.

Over the last week it has been more like 3 hours of a morning 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the evening. Multiple hot water bottles in bed and several layers.

Similar to you OP in that it's set to 17 during the day but normally that means it clicks on for a short while to get to that, then just the odd time throughout the day. But with temps below -6ish most of the day today its been on nearly all day and took most of that to get from 14.5 to 16.
Light log burner late afternoon so don't have the thermostat any higher except half an hour before kids bedtime I put it up to 19 and put hot water bottles in their beds. Once they're in bed i turn it down to 14.5 overnight.

paleviolet · 16/12/2022 21:12

Have it on 24 hours. 21 daytime and 19 nighttime.

frampan6 · 16/12/2022 21:14

Pretty much all day at mo, set to come on when temp goes below 18. It's only on in living room and bathroom though.

pigonalipstick · 16/12/2022 21:16

lottielooinwonderland · 16/12/2022 14:59

I wish I knew or could work out how much we are spending!

I'd be amazed if you're spending less than about £25-30 on that. Unless you're pan a good fixed rate deal from before the prices rose?

In answer to your question - 0hours most days. It's 12C in my house atm.

TiredButAlive · 16/12/2022 21:20

All day at 13C. One small electric heater on occasionally in the living room (kept at 17C)
