How long do you have heating on?

Hello anyone reading,

It's very cold at the moment. Our living room loses a lot of heat, but during the day I have the thermostat set to 17 degrees. It's cold but I'm trying to save monies. However the heating still kicks in consistently during the day to even keep it at that. I put it to 20.5 usually around 4pm until about 11pm as I need a bit of cosiness during the evening.
As a result our heating is on for roughly 9 hours a day during these freezing days, how long is yours on for?

P.s we have a nest smart heating system.

DH is cold-blooded so today and yesterday from 5.30 a.m to 9.00 p.m. We get up at 6.15 so it was lovely having the house warm. I set the thermostat lower from 9.30-4.00 though.

OldTinHat · 16/12/2022 16:24

I live in my own so can manage by staying in bed or wrapping myself up in layers and layers. I pop the heating on for half an hour every few days because my house is riddled with damp.

I've no idea how on earth families are coping with the cost.

I wish I knew or could work out how much we are spending!

I am with Octopus Energy. When I submit a reading, I get a bill for my usage, usually on the same day. The last one was £120 for three weeks' use of gas. I have a smart meter, but it's a bit unreliable in picking up the gas reading. It's sort of within my budget as I have built up quite a bit of credit over the summer months and intend to use it.

I have my heating set between 18 to 19 during the day and 15 at night.

I tried adjusting the flow rate on my boiler, as has been recommended to save money. Reduced it from 65 to 55. It actually ended up costing me a lot more on the lower setting, and the house would not get any warmer than 17.9. It cost me £7 in gas that day as the heating was on constantly, trying to get the house up to 18. I changed it back, and the house got much warmer and actually cost me less as the heating was on less.

teenagetantrums · 16/12/2022 17:13

We work odd hours.so just put it on when we home and it's cold. I won't be cold .
Came home from work today and put it on at 20 degrees. My DP will be home late tonight so l will leave it on. We over paid all last year because l saw this coming. So we just using our credit for cold days.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/12/2022 17:16

1.5 in the morning and 4-9 pm at 18. At the moment we have it on all day at 15 in between as it's so cold.

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 16/12/2022 17:17

I'm at home all day (following a serious illness 16 months ago). It's on from about 8am to 9pm. Gas/electricity is £191 a month

bravelittletiger · 16/12/2022 17:20

Wow can't believe how much people have theirs on!! We've got ours on a timer to come on for an hour and a half in the morning and that's it. Other than that we just do a boost of an hour or two when it gets properly unbearable. We've been tracking our usage costs and it's now up to nearly £400 a month so we can't actually afford any more than that without compromising on other things.

It costs the most to get to temperature then after not so much, so boasting it like that might not actually be the best way to heat your house.

2 hours in the morning, 4 in the evening. Thermostat set to 16 degrees during the day when it’s ‘off’. We have underfloor heating downstairs which is a bag of inefficient poop, DH whacked it on at 10am earlier this week and the room temperature had gone up by less than a degree by 4pm.

I've seen a few people now saying they have underfloor heating, I remember this from years ago my friends mother had it she used to have to put it on and wait two days for the house to get to the temp she wanted it, so she had to leave it on all the time and her bills were outrageous.
Did they not get rid of underfloor heating? Or just stop using it for new builds?

supertedious · 16/12/2022 18:38

At the moment 1.5 hours in the morning getting the children ready and then 2.5 hours in the evening. Averaging between £5-10 a day 😭

Trying to WFH when it's 11 degrees in the house is so difficult and miserable.
But then it can cost me up to £10 in fuel driving to the office and back.

I'm dreading when my current energy contract runs out in March.

Redruby2020 · 16/12/2022 18:55

@lottielooinwonderland

British Gas are changing their systems 🤔

I had smart meters for two years almost, with them, for both gas and electricity. They have never worked properly. They also would not put my gas on a bill, so it remained as a pre pay, but handy with the app on my phone, to top up etc. But the majority of the time I had to physically go out to the gas meter and input the top up code, as it would not do it automatically.

They then decided to swap it for another smart meter, that failed within 24hrs and left me without gas. As they needed to get me back o supply, they put in an old card meter as it was between 9-10pm when the engineer finally came to me.

And i have been told since that they are having network issues with the smart meters/signals in my area 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️
Haven't heard anything from anyone else!

6am-7am, 4.30pm-5.30pm, 8pm-10pm, 1am-3am.
Can't even imagine what the holidays will be like -we have some electric throws and will be getting a 500 watt oil filled heater tomorrow but will need to have central heating on for a blast in between 7am and tea time!Children's bedrooms are heated, ours isn't. Everyone is layered up !!!!

Geranium1984 · 16/12/2022 18:58

Baby, toddler and husband working from home all day.

I figure it balances out. We have hardly had the heating on at all this winter/ autumn. This cold spell though it's needed for some people more than others. We live with my 90 yr old mother so really there is no option.

4-11/12

bravelittletiger · 16/12/2022 19:46

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I've heard something like that actually. I'm not sure what the best way to do it is. Maybe we need to do a bit of a test! We've got little electric heaters in our office for WFH too to avoid putting the heating on and I'm not even sure if that's the most efficient way to do it as I suspect the electric costs a lot. I think I just don't really trust the thermostat because it's in the hallway a long way away from any of the rooms we actually live in. What I will say is that it's been fairly miserable this week wfh- I've been wearing four layers plus a dressing gown on one day and my hands get so cold 🥶 🤣. I'm just terrified of an enormous bill and we've got a lot of months to go before the heating goes off.

Athenen0ctua · 16/12/2022 19:52

Our timer is set for two hours at 13, but the sitting room gets warmer, up to 16 with the door closed. Put it on when I got in at 3 today, DS also has a short day on Friday. I will turn it off in a minute. I have to wait up to pick up DS tonight but can do that from my bed if it gets too cold downstairs.

WhatIsThisPlease · 16/12/2022 19:53

An hour in the morning at 19° then down to 14° through the day. Doesn't normally kick in at that but has been doing in this extreme cold.
On again to 19° for two hours at 5 then off for the night.

Still coding me over £10 a day and it's not even bloody warm 🥶

Athenen0ctua · 16/12/2022 19:56

Will have cost us about £2 a day just for gas usage so far this month, plus 25p sc.

NoelNoNoel · 16/12/2022 19:57

17.5 to 18 all day, 19 in evening, 14 overnight (for this freezing week only). My house is perfect.

lanbro · 16/12/2022 19:58

At the moment, it's on constantly but on a thermostat set to 17°, I keep doors shut so they individual rooms warm up nicely, and I added thermal curtains to all my windows which seems to help. I refuse to be cold in my home, and this cold snap won't last much longer! When it's as cold as this I believe it's better to have on a lower temperature constantly than keep reheating from very cold

I really don’t understand why people think underfloor heating is to heat the room ? when in fact is to heat the floor so you can walk barefoot on hard floorings. I actually read some idiots took their radiators off after installing underfloor heating, lord they’re going to regret it 😂

Willmafrockfit · 16/12/2022 20:00
