Doubled in price in one week!

PupInAPram · 15/10/2022 09:19

I'm getting used to the creeping inflation on groceries of 10p more a week here, 15p there. But this week, a 5 pack of snack bags of apricots at Asda has doubled in price from £1.25 last week to £2.50 this week. That was too much for me, so I left them. Has anyone else noticed a big jump in a week like that? For some reason it's made me really nervous about lots of food items just being priced out of my basket.

I don't know if I am being cynical but I really think some of these price hikes are far higher than they need to be. I u understand the service is there for a profit but can t sime sort of price cap be levied as it has been with utilities?

32 pack of loo roll from Home Bargains was £8.79 today. It used to be £6.79 or something then rose to £9 something so actually gone down! Reasonable quality too although slightly scented which I actually like as gives a fresh smell to bathrooms. We always used to run out of loo roll as a family of 6 but never once since I’ve starting buying a few of these a month during lockdown.

Never buy toilet roll/kitchen roll/tin foil/cling film/cleaning and personal hygiene stuff from supermarkets anymore. Home Bargains all the way! Do one 4-6 weekly shop and well worth it for savings.

The 32 pack from Home Bargains, is it 2/3 ply and how many sheets per roll?

6 tins of cat food has crept up from about £2.50 to £4.50 over the course of a year.
I've never seen anything double in price in a week. That's really bad.

It's awful for pet owners who are already struggling and only have their pet for company.

heartbroken22 · 16/10/2022 00:33

Try looking on the olio app after 9pm. You get a lot of fruit from Tesco listed on it. Here are some of the boxes we get. Could save you money and be good for environmental waste too.

I'm not fussy about many things but I like 4 ply toilet rolls. I alwsys get them at Aldi. Last time I picked them up, got them home, opened them only to find they are horribly thin, looked on packet that is identical, now they are only 3 ply. I would rather pay extra and get decent 4 ply rolls. Very sneaky changing from 4 ply to 3 ply but keeping identical packets.

Fat balls used to be about £4.50 a tub, now £7.70. Feeding the birds in winter used to be a small pleasure, now many people won't be able to afford it. It is so grim when even the smallest of luxuries will be too expensive. Poor birds🐦

Unforgettablefire · 16/10/2022 09:05

@ClaudineClare you have got to be kidding! They were £3.99 here! I think my last ones were £4.50 a couple of weeks ago. You know what I think I'll make my own I'm sure it's only lard and seeds.

bettbburg · 16/10/2022 09:09

Who gives a crap is 1.8p more expensive per 100 sheets, has no plastic and is environmentally friendly. That works for me. One delivery every 9 months or so is better too.

You can buy a huge bag of bird seed at country stores for £12 I think it was £20Kg. I have a foreman grill and use the fat run off for making fat balls. Little silicone cup cake tray. Fill with seed pour on fat whilst hot, pop in fridge to set and pop them out the next day.

It is true, honestly. Pets at home price. Hopefully Aldi will have some soon and be cheaper!

bloodyeverlastinghell I don't think I generate enough fat from cooking to make more than a couple a week, tbh! That won't last the sparrows long.

Unforgettablefire · 16/10/2022 09:54

@bloodyeverlastinghell thanks for that. I won't have much fat either but every little helps.
@ClaudineClare I just googled it there's loads of recipes online, looks dead easy and cheap I'm going to give it a go.

Wilko is still £5 for a tub of 50. Or three tubs for £13.50 currently

ClaudineClare · 16/10/2022 11:48

Thanks Rainbow. Sadly no Wilko near me. Even they have gone up to £5.95 for fifty though. www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-wild-bird-fat-balls-50-x-90g/p/0259596

Nipped into my local Tesco metro today to drop off a parcel and noticed the 1l bottles of water were 65p. I know that these were 40p in 2020 as I was breastfeeding and very thirsty in 2020! They were slightly more expensive at 45p in Tesco Express. Today as I walked past they were 65p each.

Rayn22 · 23/10/2022 23:34

It's bloody tin foil! More than doubled in price. Used to get the cheap one at 69p for kids sandwiches. Now 1.50.
Bread goes up by 10p every week.
Even dog food has gone through the roof and my dog food has nearly doubled in price.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/10/2022 23:39

Snickers ice cream.

Uses to be £1.20 for a 4 pack. Now £2.50!

Tinfoil is aluminium, contrary to the name, and production requires a LOT of energy. Fifty percent of Europe’s aluminium production is offline to avoid us having rolling blackouts from lack of energy.

Wilkes still do smartprice foil 20 meters for 70p or you get 5 for £3. Worth grabbing the 5 if you find it in stock as it goes quickly.

During the lockdown when toilet roll was in demand you could get 4 packs of 18 rolls for £10 in Farmfoods. Last time I checked it's 3 packs for £16.

Four for £22 last time I was in there.

xogossipgirlxo · 25/10/2022 10:01

Yep, loo roll got expensive. Asda 24pack is 10 quid now and quality is abysmal. I prefer lidl, 7 quid for 24 rolls also and quality is better. Wondering for how long! They won't keep this price forever.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 25/10/2022 12:45

I solve the lavatory-paper issue by buying via Groupon. Just bought 3-ply rolls at 27 pence a roll. That’s dearer than what I bought last year at 23 pence a roll. I’m fortunate in that:

I can afford the initial outlay of 30-odd quid (free delivery)

I have somewhere to store it.

I value not having the inconvenience of schlepping it back from the shops on the regular (no car)

Nsky62 · 25/10/2022 15:05

Aldi still doing cheap foil today

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 25/10/2022 17:18

Horseradish sauce! Bought some from Morrisons maybe 4 weeks ago at 60p a jar, went in today and it was £1.15 😮
