Doubled in price in one week!

PupInAPram · 15/10/2022 09:19

I'm getting used to the creeping inflation on groceries of 10p more a week here, 15p there. But this week, a 5 pack of snack bags of apricots at Asda has doubled in price from £1.25 last week to £2.50 this week. That was too much for me, so I left them. Has anyone else noticed a big jump in a week like that? For some reason it's made me really nervous about lots of food items just being priced out of my basket.

No, I buy more frozen fruit, due to cost, Aldi super market of choice

Ifailed · 15/10/2022 09:25

Stop buying snacks, no one needs them.

Pasadenadreaming · 15/10/2022 09:27

Toilet roll is the thing I'm noticing - was £7.50 for a pack of 24 and now up to £10.50!

onemouseplace · 15/10/2022 09:31

I’m also noticing pack sizes becoming much smaller. Fairy Non Bio was £10 for 65 washes. Now same price but for 50 wash pack.

Also the biggest pack of Andrex at my Sainsburys is only 9 rolls and has been for a few weeks.

That’s always happened. They increase the price to put on an offer at a later date.

I used to work at Asda head office. It’s a well known tactic. They have to have sold items at a certain price, so they can then advertise it as a deal on a lower price.

If something has jumped hugely in price, more often than not it will be on an offer shortly. I would guess this will be a buy one get one free. BOGOFF aren’t usually good deals, for this reason. They inflate the price, then sell 2 at that higher price. But you will need to buy 2 to get the price of £1.25 per pack.

Fucking hell. 😄 No matter how reasonable and understandable an OP is, someone will always find an angle.

Yes let’s all live on lentils, wear sacks and be miserable. Who needs a bit of joy in their life?

I buy things like bags of dried fruit to go in my children’s lunchboxes at school. Not a ‘snack’, but part of their meal.
Do you ever eat/drink anything you don’t ‘need’?

PupInAPram · 15/10/2022 09:33

@Ekátn thanks for the insider knowledge. If it's that, it's much less worrying tbh.

You do realise apricots are seasonal right?

Dried apricots though, with a shelf life of a zillion years?

JangolinaPitt · 15/10/2022 09:36

Just buy a big bag and decant them into a compartmentalised lunch box

WaddleAway · 15/10/2022 09:38

I’m sure the OP is aware that she can substitute the dried apricots for other things, or buy larger bags and split them, or indeed eat nothing but gruel for the rest of her days. However the thread was about whether the price rise she observed is likely to be replicated across other products, and the worry she has regarding that.

ptsdmum · 15/10/2022 09:40

@WaddleAway well put!

Some of my bills have almost doubled, so seems it is being replicated in some areas but not all

ZenNudist · 15/10/2022 09:42

They stick prices up so they can put them back down and call it an offer. It's always happened.

FoxCorner · 15/10/2022 09:43

Tesco aren't doing as many offers as they used to. Loo roll used to be discounted regularly but I don't really see that now. £10 for 12 double rolls now (own brand)

This and so loose on the roll it seems to shrink all the time. I’ve switched to who gives a crap which worked out the same price per sheet as supermarket nice stuff.

not that supermarket cheap stuff is cheap anymore 1.99 for four rolls

Toilet roll is the biggest jump I’ve seen. There was a wood shortage months ago, so I’m assuming that it’s fall out from that.

Recognising the actual issue in the OP, for starters.

Does dried fruit though? I've been buying this for years and it's never jumped in price like this before. As @ZenNudist have suggested, it may have been priced up in order to put it on special offer in a few weeks. I've shopped in the same Asda for 30 years and never seen a grocery item DOUBLE in price in one week.

If you have kids is it really a luxury to give fruit as snacks now? Fucking hell
