Doubled in price in one week!

PupInAPram · 15/10/2022 09:19

I'm getting used to the creeping inflation on groceries of 10p more a week here, 15p there. But this week, a 5 pack of snack bags of apricots at Asda has doubled in price from £1.25 last week to £2.50 this week. That was too much for me, so I left them. Has anyone else noticed a big jump in a week like that? For some reason it's made me really nervous about lots of food items just being priced out of my basket.

Lidls premium super soft loo rolls are £2.99 for 9 rolls - think that’s pretty good value!

Pasadenadreaming · 15/10/2022 09:27

Toilet roll is the thing I'm noticing - was £7.50 for a pack of 24 and now up to £10.50!

Kitchen roll has gone up massively too.

mrsbyers · 15/10/2022 15:47

Bovril cubes have jumped from £1.10 to £1.50 in Asda - there’s no way they can justify that and even though they’re my favourite snack I just won’t buy them now

Stop buying snacks, no one needs them.

Ridiculous

Fucking hell. 😄 No matter how reasonable and understandable an OP is, someone will always find an angle.

It is true that buying apricots in mini bags is a crazy thing to do if you're watching the pennies though.

woodhill · 15/10/2022 15:54

Cornflour was not available at Tesco and in a tiny box at Waitrose

@RewildingAmbridge butter £1.65! It's £2 for own brand in Asda. It never even occurred to me that M&S could beat Asda price.

Yes I bought some for £1.75 recently in M&S

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 15/10/2022 16:00

I went to buy the snack bags of apricots in Asda today, too, and noticed the huge price hike - they went straight back onto the shelves.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/10/2022 16:04

Lidl toilet rolls aren’t that cheap either.

Does dried fruit though? I've been buying this for years and it's never jumped in price like this before. As @ZenNudist have suggested, it may have been priced up in order to put it on special offer in a few weeks. I've shopped in the same Asda for 30 years and never seen a grocery item DOUBLE in price in one week.

Bloody hell I always buy these for the kids & like you say they have never had an offer on this particular item so I doubt that is the reason! I absolutely will not be buying them for £2.50 😱!

I always buy alpro soya in long life section , was always £1.40 then slowly started creeping up, it's now £1.90 in Asda , not to mention loads of other items are literally shooting up week on week

Yes. Some people do.
What about diabetics?
People with conditions that need to eat little and often?

Dooooo one.

Lilacsunflowers · 15/10/2022 16:31

Stop buying snacks, no one needs them.

Instead of buying 'snacks' (which are expensive) just buy normal food (bread, fruit etc) and eat that when you're hungry between meals.

saleorbouy · 15/10/2022 16:39

Be a more savy shopper, you are buying snack packs which work out at over £12 at kg. You can buy a single pack of 500g for £2.80 which is half the price of your current purchase just decant them to a tub for your snacks.....

WakingUpDistress · 15/10/2022 16:50

Tbh I’ve noticed the same thing.
When the packaging is reduced, its not because they want to make a special offer later on.
Also for more or less the same shopping basket, I’ve noticed the total price jump again in the last two weeks by about 10%. It’s not going to go down, that’s for sure.

Itsokay2020 · 15/10/2022 17:14

Not an essential item, but my favourite M&S sandwich has risen from £4.25 to £4.50 and now £5.00! Needless to say, it’s no longer my favourite sandwich!

Yes, OP, I’m noticing lots of price increases and being much more savvy with my shopping having once taken it for granted 😔

I do eat fruit and bread. The little apricot packs are a treat and are easy to grab and go in the morning, so that I can be at work for 6.30am without faffing. I'll just not bother with them. I'm more worried by the thought of fruit and bread doubling in price in a week was the point of my first post..

I don't know about per item but i just got back from Aldi with 3 bags of shopping (the strong reusable bag size) and it was £80. Not any particularly fancy food, just a regular family shop. Fruit , meat, cheese, kids lunchbox items - nothing out of the ordinary. Was not long ago you could fill a deep trolly in Aldi and get change out of £80.

That's so expensive

I always make my own

Get toilet rolls from who gives a crap, it's much more cost effective.

woodhill · 15/10/2022 18:18

Dd buys it and it was like brown paper

Element4056 · 15/10/2022 18:26

I've noticed a huge jump with pampers baby wipes. Used to be able to buy a 12 pack for £7.50 from Asda and now £12 in most stores. I've used many different brands of wipes and just found pampers worked best for us. Open to suggestions if anyone has any!

JustFeckIt · 15/10/2022 18:31

32 pack of loo roll from Home Bargains was £8.79 today. It used to be £6.79 or something then rose to £9 something so actually gone down! Reasonable quality too although slightly scented which I actually like as gives a fresh smell to bathrooms. We always used to run out of loo roll as a family of 6 but never once since I’ve starting buying a few of these a month during lockdown.

Never buy toilet roll/kitchen roll/tin foil/cling film/cleaning and personal hygiene stuff from supermarkets anymore. Home Bargains all the way! Do one 4-6 weekly shop and well worth it for savings.

Have you actually done the maths?
This works out 25% cheaper based on multiplying the number of rolls the number of sheets the ply.

Yes! And they seem to be marketing them as double rolls now 'so you only need to use less than before'. I had to tell my family not to use as much 🤦🏻‍♀️

  • multiplying the number of rolls by the number of sheets by the ply.
