To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

Jeez I just checked my history on nest and our heating has been on A LOT. Christ. I'm Gona dread this next bill

Brutal.

That eyeballs to about 150 hours. If you are at £2 an hour for heating then £300 in 9 days if you are on the 10p tariff.

Maybe close the skylight off at the bottom with some sort of hatch.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/12/2022 11:23

No we are in variable :(

I logged onto British gas, updated the meter reading and it updated our account to show we are £367 in debt. We pay £120 a month so I'll have to increase that but those figures are concerning @GasPanic . Is that definitely right?? Fuck if so

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/12/2022 11:24

How do I know if I'm £2 an hour?!

Notcontent · 14/12/2022 11:52

i have also been using quite a lot of heating without actually having a particularly warm house. I can heat my kitchen diner separately so putting that on in the morning but it only gets to around 18 so not super warm. Seems to take ages to go from around 15 in the morning to 18 in the afternoon. Upstairs where our bedrooms are I only put that on a couple of hours before bed and then turn off, so it never gets to more than 16. It was 14 degrees in my bedroom this morning! That’s too cold for me. But just trying to be sensible.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/12/2022 12:08

It can't be £2 an hour. Anyway here is now my updated bill from Oct to today.

The online portal for my electric company is finally working again (not been working at all this month) so I checked it and actually only used 62e worth of electricity so far this month. I was expecting far far more (flashback to December last year when our bill was over 600e for the month). I'm half considering turning the heat up a couple of degrees but then again we'll use much more over Christmas with all the cooking and heating up the sauna so perhaps not. It'll cost more in Jan/Feb/March because it'll be colder then so will take more power to keep the current heat so I can't get too excited about the bills yet.

Nest can be connected as simple 'on/off' (relay) or via OpenTherm.

If you have a modern combi boiler that supports OpenTherm, you should check how your Nest is wired up/configured.

Just had email from Bulb. Elec prices going up again. No change to standing charges or gas.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2022 19:59

Ditto @OhPeggySue

ehe. Do we get moved to octopus

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 14/12/2022 21:00

I got one from shell for electricity on mo day about the price cap and the government price guarantee so I don't think out bills are changing really. In fact it has a projection of us saving a whole £10 for the year on the new rate..

Apparently so at some point.

From Bulb? No change to gas or standing charges but elec is going up.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2022 22:54

Meant when do we move to octopus from bulb

Tbh the rise wasn't huge. Not even pennies

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2022 22:56

Not a huge increase in Jan. But it wil be in April

Athenen0ctua · 15/12/2022 06:16

Is the new one from April for a couple of years? I wonder if average consumption drops this winter, if they can then raise unit prices to maintain average costs at £3000?

Athenen0ctua · 15/12/2022 07:22

Anyone know if the price cap is linked specifically to the average 2900 and 12000kwh or if this drops could the price go up?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/12/2022 14:51

Just did a reading today so since yesterday morning we have used 16 units. Have no idea what that means in money terms though!

FourTeaFallOut · 15/12/2022 14:57

1m3 is roughly 10kwh of gas. So 16units/160kwh/£16 at the svr rate.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/12/2022 15:00

So £16 a day? £500 for the month? Wow thats a lot. We are going to have to make some savings somewhere else. Our thermostat is never even reaching 19 deg now. I think I need to increase the boiler pressure

This is particularly cold, even for December, hopefully it'll be less severe moving on. I think there is a reprieve coming on Monday and a bit milder than now thereafter.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/12/2022 17:37

So I chatted with British gas and it's not units on the meter. Who knew. It's digits and then they get converted to units.

I gave them today's reading and asked what the cost was since yesterday. He said he couldn't tell me as he wasn't sure of my meter type which dictates how you convert them or what the cost is or something.

I think they make it so confusing so you actually can't fucking work it out.

Yes that's true plus I'll be going back to work next month so the heating won't need to be on so much

It should say on the meter. Mine says m^3 which is roughly x11 to get kwh (it varies and there is a more complicated formula but x11 gives a very good idea).

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 15/12/2022 23:14

@ThisGirlNever just spoke to DH and he said it is not a nest with opentherm connection
