To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

No, you're always supposed to scrape a wet room floor if its not got underfloor heating (even then its better to scrape the floor so that it dries quicker), but especially so in a completely unheated room. I usually stick a fan there afterwards as well to help it dry quicker.

I stayed in a hotel with a wet room and they had a fantastic dehumidifier that kicked in and dried the room out. It was also a heater. It was right outside the shower cubicle so you stepped out and it blew warm air at you. A When I win the lottery purchase

I've tried a cold shower, but I still need my usual two minutes to wash, then I'm wasting hot water while slowly turning the temperature down, only to get it to cold, quickly turn it off and jump out shivering! I don't think it's for me.

Oh no, sorry it didn't work for you :( maybe my body is just weird because it works for me! (only needed to slowly turn the temperature down the first couple of times, until I was used to it, so no more wasting hot water for me but I might just be more used to cold showers because I've always done them inbetween sauna sessions)

Oooo sounds luxurious! My last house (which was equivalent to a council house, so not fancy high priced luxury home) had a lovely big wet room with underfloor heating. Used to dry the washing in there. Also the sauna had a radiator in which really confused me but I guess was to make sure it stayed warm enough to not get damp or mould issues if no one used the sauna for a long time.

We will never know as many of the no-heating brigade will still claim it's off when the reality is every radiator throbbing and rooms at 25C.

MaryMollyPolly · 01/12/2022 08:12

Well, we have decided to put the heating on today, an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. I’m actually fine without any heating and still think it’s pretty warm, but DH and I work from home and he feels the cold -and spurns the electric throw.

purpleme12 · 01/12/2022 08:48

It is interesting reading the thread though because while there are people with houses as cold as mine without heating, it's very obvious a lot of people's houses are much much warmer even without heating so it's no surprise those people can be ok without heating!

My thermometer came - so I can now say it is currently 18.2'c in my living room (no heating)

@purpleme12 for context though, this post of mine was a few weeks back. It is now 16.6'c in my living room, despite having had the heating on for 90 mins this morning and having the gas fire on low as I type!

purpleme12 · 01/12/2022 09:56

Yes I get that but my point is as I'm reading this thread (either now or a few weeks back) there are still many houses which are significantly warmer than mine even without heating.
It just interested me.
(My house was 9 degrees in the bedroom yesterday evening) obviously I hadn't had the heating on all day - I hadn't been in.

Extremely unlikely. If they are on this thread and struggling with the cost then they may have put it on a couple of hours a day but hardly into the twenties. We have ours on for two hours after work at 16. My DGM in her late 80s has hers at 22 and I have to take my jumper off there so 25 would be horrible.

OhmygodDont · 01/12/2022 11:11

Ours is set to 18 during the day though sometimes I drop it to 17.5 and 17 overnight our house hasn’t dropped below 17 if it does I’ll change it down to say 16 or whatever. We do occasionally boost it to say 19/20 but at the moment I’ve got two children full of snot and coughs so that tends to be a short sharp boost of an hour before bed.

Peedoffo · 01/12/2022 12:08

carefulcalculator · 29/11/2022 11:17

This is why those who can afford their heating should just pay it - there is no point damaging a house to save a couple of hundred pounds in the short term.

Where heating can't be afforded at all is an entirely different issue Sad

Yep also increases the risk of pneumonia and chest infections. I have a thermostat it's programmed for 20 daytime 19 at night. It doesn't turn on much we have good insulation. I imagine heating a house from 13-14 would cost more energy wise.

Busytimes · 01/12/2022 13:30

My dh is too scared of cost to putours on . I am day clothes plus onsie on top. My nose is cold.
today … it is getting to me .😔

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 01/12/2022 13:34

Turned my fire off for an hour, and in that hour it dropped a degree again - from 17 back to 16. So the fire is back on now. Just faffed with my heating timer so it is on for more time again, will keep an eye on the price (total 2hrs in the morning and 2.5hrs in the evening atm)

bloodyeverlastinghell · 01/12/2022 13:36

It's my mouse clutching claw that gets frozen along with my nose. despite my lovely fingerless gloves. Working in the office tomorrow where it is toastie warm but I have to pay for petrol and parking!

GreenLunchBox · 04/12/2022 19:59

This thread has been illuminating

We've massively cut down on usage but the bills have doubled. We used to pay £200 a month for gas and elec back when prices were cheap 😬 The £66 a month will help

BiddyPop · 04/12/2022 20:23

I'm still mostly using my HWB midweek and a blanket over my knees rather than turning on the rads. Our gas bill came in on Friday and it's lower than last year. But I have been cold despite thermals, extra layers and my HWB.

I am trying to find the balance as I know we will need more as the weather gets colder this week - but the unit price is significantly higher than last year so I need to limit the use.

BiddyPop · 04/12/2022 20:24

And the stove has been lit from early afternoon both days this weekend.

GreenLunchBox · 04/12/2022 22:04

I just think that if somebody with my (decent) income is stressing about the cost of energy bills, what on earth is the average person doing? I honestly think that the shit will hit the fan in February

GasPanic · 05/12/2022 10:57

I am not "no heating" but do have a strategy I am happy with.

1 hours gas CH per day to stop the house from freezing. £1.20 per day.
12 hours dehumidification per day to keep house dry and mould from forming. £0.70 per day.
1 hours electric heating (1kW) in the bedroom before bed. 0.35p per day.
Heated throw on sofa when needed. 10p (?) per day.

Which adds up to about £2.35 per day.

I may add an extra hours heating when the weather gets cold next week.

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 05/12/2022 11:27

Putting mine up to two hours in the morning and three in the evening, and turning my radiators up to medium, puts mine at about £4 per day atm. Can't leave it on low all day (or at least it wouldn't be cheaper to), as no room thermostats.

Thats about my limit for "usual" daily heating while it's in single figures. Will have to allow more for snow, so don't want to use up my credit now. It's been dropping to 16'c in my bedroom, which sounds high but my snake is not impresssssed. Have to keep waking up in the night to boost her temp (should be 20'c at night)

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2022 12:41

@BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter can you not have a separate heater for snake tank

BeyondTheLetterOfTheLawTheLetter · 05/12/2022 12:47

She has a heater in there for the day (set to 30'c) but I've never had to heat her extra at night before, room temp doesn't usually get that cold as I've had the heating on more. I will have to set up a second heater, or maybe a second thermostat - will look into it. Atm I've just been sporadically putting her heat on to warm it up a bit

bloodyeverlastinghell · 05/12/2022 17:10

my strategy is now heating on for an hour first thing. Wood stove on after work. Oil radiator in both kids rooms on low in the evening possibly overnight when it’s freezing outside. Electric blankets on all the beds. I’m burning windfall I’ve squirrelled away over the last couple of years so at least that is free.

Mine's a tortoise so don't just take my word for it, but we have a black "lightbulb" that works well to keep night temps up. Don't really need a thermostat for it when you know it's cold.

Outfor150 · 05/12/2022 18:58

We had it on in the morning the other day -because DH had left the back door open overnight. It’s still not generally on, though. Not in the morning or evening. We do have heated throws and electric blankets, though.
