To wonder how long the no heating brigade will last when it turns cold?

I’ve been contemplating how much I can reduce the heating and electric throws. It’s chilly here today, sixteen degrees, but grey and drizzly. I’ve lit the wood stove, I do have a cold so maybe I feel more susceptible to chills.

I feel like I’ve fallen at first hurdle. Definitely going to be keeping one warm room in the house so it’s not just really unpleasant for the dc. I’ve recently paid 365 for four cubic metres kiln dried wood but it’s going to cost 1K to fill the oil tank for 1000 litres. Was a third of that last year.

Heating goes off mid evening when folks switch to throws or watching TV in bed etc. Flat unheated overnight, was 12 degrees when i got up this morning! Put heating on just to bring temps up a bit, then off again until early evening.

Dehumidifiers -I’m thinking of getting one for helping dry washing particularly. I’m not sure where best to put it. They seem to work best in small rooms with the door shut. But I tend to dry washing downstairs, where it’s open plan. I don’t have a utility room and I really think the bathroom is too small. I don’t think a rack would even fit on the floor, never mind anyone getting in to use the loo etc. Is it still worth getting one? I don’t have a garage or a shed.

We bought one (Which best buy) but I'm not massively impressed with it. It doesn't 'resume at power on' - i.e. if I switch it on at the wall, I need to also manually press the machine's power button to start it. This means I can't use a smart plug to turn it on and off via a schedule.

If you're going to buy one, I'd definitely recommend getting one that can 'resume after a power cut'.

Does anyone still not have their heating on? There is ice on the inside of the windows here.

That is very dangerous and unhealthy. Are you not able to switch it on at all?

I used it very sparingly up until about 3 days ago but when I was still cold in bed with 7 lays on plus a HWB, I caved. It was on all day yesterday and was £11 and on again today and is at £4 so far but I just couldn't do it any longer. Weather changes again on Sunday and is around 12 degrees next week, so I'll turn it off again then.

I did have it on this morning for an hour and it was warm for dc going to school. I have a woodstove in the room I'm working in and went through to make a coffee and there is ice on the inside of kitchen window and the front door window.

It's an old building and despite having spent a lot of money on wood sash double glazing and internal insulation when it is this cold outside it doesn't retain the heat.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/12/2022 11:57

-5 here today and it’s cold

snowed Sunday

heating is def on

gamerchick · 13/12/2022 12:06

-3 here and it's off. It'll go on for couple of hours for the bairn getting in from school but that's it. I don't have ice on the inside of the windows though.

Natsku · 13/12/2022 12:35

The only windows with ice on inside are my porch windows, and its not heated in there (we do have a little radiator in there but not switching it on this year except maybe over Christmas just to keep it above freezing so I can use it as a second fridge).
Its -10 here and feels so much colder this year, usually I wouldn't be bothered at this temperature but I think because my house isn't as warm as normal I don't get the chance to warm up properly so I feel the cold so much more. Had to steal my OH's heated gloves yesterday for the nursery run.

OhmygodDont · 13/12/2022 20:46

Think we have used five hours so far today. It’s been so cold out -6

Peasepuddingbloodycold · 13/12/2022 21:34

Down to 10 degrees inside here, and that’s our warmest room. So, the heating’s been going on. Energy cost has doubled, and we’re still pretty cold and misery ☹️

But why is that room so cold?!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/12/2022 22:47

Jeez I just checked my history on nest and our heating has been on A LOT. Christ. I'm Gona dread this next bill

purpleme12 · 13/12/2022 22:48

Our house is regularly 10 degrees at the minute. Sometimes lower. (Until we turn the heating on but I don't have it on when I'm out for example or in the night)

Jesus, what's your target temperature?

It was 19deg until a few days ago then I put it to 20 as it still felt cold!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/12/2022 22:57

I'm North East Scotland and it's been very cold!

FourTeaFallOut · 13/12/2022 23:09

That's brutal. I have my targets at 17.5c overnight and 19.5c 6am-10pm and our boiler has been running 6.5hours with the flow temp at 65c. But we haven't had anything lower than -4c so far, hopefully that'll hold.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/12/2022 23:16

I get such a cold head with anything less than 18.5 through the night and a sore throat too.
I like being cosy bit also we have a baby and a toddler so I don't want it cooler than 19 really.

We live in an eduardian house which has a single glazed sky light in the hall with a huge void and I think hot air just goes out there. Not sure how to rectify that!

Cynderella · 13/12/2022 23:24

It was never my plan to do without heating, just to hold off for as long as I could, and to reduce the kwh I use. I'm pleased that we made it to the end of November before we needed heating. In December, it's been on every evening. Last few days, for an hour in the mornings too. Unless it gets much warmer, I'm now having it on every day for an hour when we're getting up and for a couple of hours in the evenings.

I already had a dehumidifier, but I thought I wouldn't need it this year now I have trickle extractor fans in the cellar and bathroom. Going to recommend those to keep damp at bay. Dehumidifier is only needed when washing is drying (not used tumble dryer yet). Have got humidity levels much reduced in the house now heating is on.

Even though I resisted, the Oodie has been so effective in reducing the need for heating. Cynical family have all given in and got them now. Daughter got an Amazon one, but now has an Oodie after trying mine.

And wool layers - most of mine are 'nearly new'. Looking at my energy use this year, savings have easily paid for everything I bought in preparation.

Natsku · 14/12/2022 06:05

We don't have the heating on upstairs during the day, the bedroom was 14 degrees when I went up to bed last night - wish I had put the heating on a bit before I went to bed! And the bathroom is so cold in the mornings as there's no heating in there at all (I leave the door open so the heat from downstairs might rise up and go into it but OH keeps shutting the door after he's been in there, urgh), had to wrap DS up in a blanket to brush his teeth this morning.

I considered getting a cheap version but then I saw a lovely thick cotton dressing gown (like the kind you'd get in a fancy hotel) for sale second hand and opted for that instead because I really don't like fleece clothes, hate the feeling of them. The dressing gown is great though, feel so much warmer with it on. Plus it has pockets.

I think you need to turn off the radiators in the hall and stairs keep the doors shut to the room that u use to keep them toastie and warm.

There's only one radiator in the hall, none in the upstairs landing. The nest is downstairs in the hall too.
I'm Gona take my latest reading for gas and submit it and see what it does to my bill.
I've missed giving a reading the last two times and I think British gas underestimated our use the last couple of times.
It's so annoying as it is a smart meter but I think it's a first gen 1 so they can't read it automatically

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/12/2022 10:22
