Just been reading the Aldi thread and got huffy - it sounds like they have lots of lovely stuff, but we don't have one. We do have a Lidl though.... just as good?

What should I buy?

We're lucky because we have both of them next to each other. I buy most of my stuff in ALDI then get the things I couldn't get/prefer in LIDL.

This is what I buy in LIDL...
Muesli
Oat crumble cereal
Own brand Weetabix
Oats
Chocolate
Rolls from in store bakery (cheese and onion and pumpkin seed are lovely!)
Cakes from in store bakery (can recommend muffins and doughnuts)
Seeded white batch loaf at 99p
Chorizo
Meat has been fine
High juice squash (like blackcurrant and also apple)
Long life juice (apple and cloudy apple)
Tinned beans
Choc ices
Frozen cheesecake
Own brand Lurpak butter
Ham
Cheese

I think you just need to try things and see what you think. Most stuff is pretty good.

Queenofknickers · 12/09/2014 18:21

Meat and fish are good
Brie
Anything from bakery!
All their fruit and veg are good in my experience.
Champagne at 11 quid for Christmas or an emergency gift

Costanza · 12/09/2014 18:23

I nipped in the other day and got a choclate twist for 45p! Was very nice

I shop in Lidl every week and love it!

Yes the muesli is very good. We get the luxury fruit and nut, in a blue bag.

My shopping bill has plummeted since I started shopping there Smile

Costanza · 12/09/2014 18:26

Is it genuinely good - or good because it's cheap?

How does it compare to say, Waitrose?

helensburgh · 12/09/2014 18:30

I love lidl, apart from the meat.

I've head to bin chicken twice because it was off, but in date.

Took back both times and they agreed and refunded.

Tiredemma · 12/09/2014 18:31

Im a big Aldi fan, however Lidl is right by where I work and I have recently started popping in on my way home.

Bread is great, Croissants
cheese

NAPPIES are brill (tojours brand)

kinkymouse · 12/09/2014 18:38

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/09/2014 18:43

I think aldi packaging is nicer but the foods broadly similar.

The half price weekend offers are fab. I think it's Black Forest ham tomorrow.

ThursdayLast · 12/09/2014 18:44

The filter coffee in the gold packet.
Greek yog.
Butter.
Lardons.
Any cold/sliced meats.
Any non-cheddar cheeses.
Blueberries cheap.
Recently had some v nice rice. But it wasn't there this week.
Popcorn.
Little raisin boxes cheaper than elsewhere.

SilentBob · 12/09/2014 18:46

Wine wine wine. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc- I bloody love the stuff but most makes me come out in a rash. Not so the lovely lovely lidl brand one. And it's only £5.89 a bottle, take that, ex-favourite Villa Maria!

Ahem, also:

Milk is 95p, free range eggs 99p, olive oil is very good, fruit and veg cheap as although I admit i've never stored any longer than maybe 2 days so not sure on longevity.

I'm also massively partial to their frozen apple strudel. I should be Blush as a chef! but at 99p I'm unrepentant!

Smoked haddock fillets were almost given away last time I was there and they were delicious!

randomfemale · 12/09/2014 18:48

I love Lidl - only thing I've tried but binned was their own brand coffee. Never shopped in Waitrose but Lidl goods are at least as good (if not better) than Tesco, Morrisons, Asda.

OddFodd · 12/09/2014 19:05

The fruit and veg are great but don't last ages. Cheese/cold meat/fish all excellent. Actually the only thing I've ever bought there which wasn't nice was the houmous. And the aisle of treasures is fab!

chocolatespiders · 12/09/2014 19:09

Spicy couscous in fridge is good

Bakery - wow!
Choc digestives 59p - lush
And cooking choc to make brownies is good

plannedshock · 12/09/2014 19:16

I second the meat going rancid even though it's in date, especially mince so just freeze it as soon as you get in, bakery section is great-cheese twists are lush!

Bohemond · 12/09/2014 19:32

The lager with the gold label (95p)
Dried mango - can't go wrong at 1.29
Black label butter
Most of bakery
Fake bahlsen choc biccies and fake snickers
Jams are amazing - cherry is best
Honey v cheap and good
Gherkins
Pretzels
Vita fit veg and orange juice

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 12/09/2014 19:49

I swear by
liquid and bar soaps
Shampoo
Crisps
Cakes and pastries
Fruit
Veg
Sausages
Dried fruit
Own brand micro porridge
Little bars of fake kinder choc
Olive oil
Tinned toms
Kidney beans
Choc mousse
Spreading cheese triangles
Deli meats and tapas style snacks
Gherkins

How has noone mentioned the bars of marzipan, which is as good as it gets?

willowisp · 12/09/2014 20:15

I like Aldi & Lidl - so their free range & organic eggs. Their free range chicken & also partial to the frozen apple strudel, the frozen fruit,British unsealed butter & 85% dark choc.

What I don't like is the cheaper ingredients in a lot of the convemice food, so lots of glucose-fructose syrup in biscuits, choc bars, pasta sauces.

mirpuppet · 12/09/2014 20:20

I shop at Lidl and Waitrose. They are different but I'm happy to go to both. Unlike Tesco's which annoys me.

At Lidl I buy:

greek yogurt in large tub
fresh vegetables
lardons
ham
olive oil

I try to keep away from aisle of treasures it becomes clutter in my house.

I'm iffy on Lidl's meat -- I have purchased it but I prefer meat from Waitrose.

helensburgh · 12/09/2014 21:20

I avoid the bakery loose items as in ours there's always people lifting them up,with their hands, yuk!!

chocolatespiders · 12/09/2014 21:28

We get to the bbakery for opening time on sat morning and pretend we casre in France for 2 seconds

moggiek · 12/09/2014 22:38

I'm addicted to their cheese pasta salad.
