Just been reading the Aldi thread and got huffy - it sounds like they have lots of lovely stuff, but we don't have one. We do have a Lidl though.... just as good?

What should I buy?

Oh, and their Stilton is amazing!

INeedSomeHelp · 13/09/2014 18:42

I went to Lidl for the first time today as I was visiting my Mum and there is one near her.
The bread all looked amazing. I just got a small tiger load as there's only me in the house. It was still warm and smelled great all the way home in the car.
Also got the Hunters Chicken sauce and the pretend Magnums so looking forward to trying them.
I would say it's a nicer store than my local Aldi - a lot brighter with wide aisles. It also had a lot more recognisable brands eg Andrex.
I will definitely be going back next time I'm at Mum's.

INeedSomeHelp · 13/09/2014 18:43

Tiger loaf obviously. The smell of a tiger load doesn't bear thinking about.

Today I had an autumn fruit lattice from the bakery and it was divine. They have also just brought out gorgeous vanilla crowns pastries which I've bought for tomorrow's breakfast coffee treat.

kinkymouse · 13/09/2014 20:45

lidl and waitrose most hygienic supermarkets

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 14/09/2014 09:02

Add to my list the berries and cherries muesli, which is boxed similarly to Dorset Cereals. Gorgeous

BeCool · 14/09/2014 09:24

I only get to one occasionally and this us what I buy/stock up on.

Goat cheese logs and spread
Gorgonzola
Feta
Halloumi.

Sliced chorizo and salamis.
Good naice ham.
Chorizo piece.
Pancetta/lardons.
Frozen salmon
Ice cream
Olive oil.

Cheerio type things.

Veggie crisps.
Not from concentrate cloudy apple juice.
Sweets shaped like hamburgers - these are super awesome.

CC cream is wonderful if you can find it. £2! though the bb cream is overly fragranced IMO.

Lovely linseed based toppings for yoghurt - nice breakfast.
Large tubs yoghurt.

Big jars of green olives and red peppers.

Fruit and vege

Meat for freezer.
They do a pulled pork ready to cook in the oven which is yum. But I've not been impressed with other ready meal type stuff.

Massive bags of fresh apples when in season.

Nappies are great but not needed anymore.

bigbutsrus1 · 16/09/2014 18:58

I bought whole free chicken for £4, two rib-eye steaks for £6, also a T-bone steak that was delicious!! I get their lamb mince for Shepards pie and it's £2.20 I think. My weekly shop has halved Grin I also think their fruit is good and the cold meats. I bought loads of frozen fish cod, smoked haddock to make a fish pie and was great. Also got 4 fresh salmon steaks for £3!! Love it

Rubberstamp · 24/09/2014 22:24

Cheese twists from bakery, so good it's worrying.
Cheese pasta salad thing.
Cooked meats (better than aldi)
Vegetable crisps.
Big buckets of yoghurt.

I work next to a lidl so may have sampled most things...

pudseypie · 25/09/2014 20:13

I have been recently and liked:
Toujours nappies
dark amazonia chocolate
fake kinder style choc bars
apples - which were enormous!
ciel brand handwash
also got goodies from bakery which were cheap and tasted good
also frozen toffee pavlova - yum

I love Lidl. We've been on an economy drive for the last year so I started going to Lidl and now I go most weeks. Particular favourites are:

Maple cured bacon - Sainsburys used to sell this and we loved it, then they stopped - I was ridiculously happy to find it in Lidl
Vast refill bags of Cien hand soap - I love the milk and honey one
All the copycat chocs are great, fake Snickers etc
Pasta sauce - we use the onion & garlic one on our pizzas, it's yummy
Tinned sweetcorn - no added salt or sugar, unlike most of Sainsburys varieties
Artichoke hearts in oil - love these on my pizza Grin

We regularly buy Lidl fruit, veg, part-baked petit pains (so cheap!), milk, butter, cheese, fruit juice, flour, pasta, ketchup, soy sauce, eggs.

I've never had problems with the fruit and veg going off, it's all equal to Sainsburys quality in my experience, and the meat is equally good.

I'm a total convert. I like their special promotions too, you never know what new things are going to be on the shelves. I bought some terrific snow boots for the kids last year.

There's an Aldi opening near us in a few months and I'm looking forward to trying it for comparison Smile

umiaisha · 21/10/2014 14:45

I buy quite a few bits from Lidl, but not sure I could do my entire weeks shop there. I would recommend:

Nappies
Wipes
Cien handwash
Kids toothpaste
Dishwasher tablets, salt and rinse aid.
Snide chocolate bars!
Grated cheese
Smoked salmon
Cornish pasties
Coleslaw
Sparkling flavoured water
Mini boxes of raisins
Pretzels
Juice cartons

Bought a packet of cheese sauce there today for the bargain price of 25p - Colmans is normally just under £1... Has anyone tried it??

idlefolly · 21/10/2014 14:53

I love Lidl!

Another vote for the luxury fruit & nut muesli, it's the best I've ever found.

Also chocolate, chocolate biscuits (fake Rocky bars), the fruit & veg is absolutely brilliant IMO. Quite often twice the size of other supermarkets' F&V and so cheap! Also their nuts are great, cheese, cold meats (they have a black forest ham that is so similar to prosciutto for £1.99), oh and my favourite, a 1kg bucket of Greek yoghurt for about £1.50! The wine is great for every day drinking. I can't fault the quality of the food. Great for basic tinned stuff too. You just can't get everything there. I tend to do a main shop at Lidl and then fill in the gaps from Waitrose.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 21/10/2014 14:54

Theyve got all their Finest range of stuff in for Christmas which im slowly munching my way through going to make up a Hamper for MIL. Loads of really nice stuff

We had their chicken breasts wrapped in bacon with cheese sauce last nught for tea and it was lovely. Followed by a bag of chocolate covered gingerbread.

idlefolly · 21/10/2014 14:57

Oh and it is taking ALL my willpower to not buy and scoff all the chocolate covered gingerbread they have in for Christmas at the moment! Their Christmas stuff is great.

cozietoesie · 21/10/2014 16:02

I've never bought something which is truly dreadful at LIDL but I have at Aldi - so I'm a LIDL shoppeer. In fact, there are several things there that I buy simply because they're really good. The fact that they're reasonably priced is just a bonus.

furcoatbigknickers · 21/10/2014 16:12

furcoatbigknickers · 21/10/2014 16:13

I don't buy theirmest except cooked

Madmog · 21/10/2014 16:51

I haven't done a major shop in Lidl, but am walking there a couple of times in the week to see whats on offer or cheaper than Tescos.

I've bought cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce and apples and they all last as long as Tescos.

Things I've bought and not noticed the difference: cheese, milk, ham, filter coffee (French one), Nescafe cappunicino (being a brand wouldn't taste different, but half the price), cakes, tin tomatoes, cider, oh and I recommend their part baked bread (49p, whereas Tescos is double).

VampiresLoveNECKtarines · 21/10/2014 18:45

Two half baked baguettes (bake in the oven at home)- 39p Grin

Molecule · 21/10/2014 18:59

Their Nespresso compatible coffee pods are almost as good as the genuine ones, and almost half the price.

annielostit · 21/10/2014 19:15

Continental meats are good as are pickled cornishons and bottled red peppers. In store bakery at our store has the best ciabatta for 79p. I even converted DM to the Irish sausage in a bun.

Schoolname · 22/10/2014 18:39

Buy everything there now apart from a once a month tesco delivery for the few things I can't get such as sweetend soya milk, spices, a few toiletries and some beans and lentil tins. My shopping bill has gone down by about 1/3 and we are eating better than we ever have before.

FuckyNell · 22/10/2014 18:51

I too shop at waitrose (well, ocado) and lidl.

The things I get at lidl and not waitrose are

Avocados
Naice hams
Grated and sliced cheddar
Greek salad cheese
Greek yogurt (huge tub £1.69)
Sausage rolls
Fickers (fake snickers)
Fagnums (fake magnums)
Food caddy liners
Bin liners
Quiche
Chicken breasts
Fresh Breaded chicken breasts (good short ingredient list and yum) £1.69 for 4
Bacon
Loose fruit (never stays around long here) etc 6 large plums £1
Orange juice cartons
Gherkins
Roast peppers
Fresh peppers (50p)
Bread

I have tried all the above at every single other supermarket but far and above prefer lidl versions. It's brilliant quality!

FuckyNell · 22/10/2014 18:53

Ooh yes freezer 9 petit pans
Deluxe beef burginon pies
Delux Belgian chocolate cheesecake
