I keep it in the fridge but some of it is off almost right away especially carrots.

Once or twice I've had problems but usually it's fine. I bought a bag of pears in there last week that is still rock hard! It annoys me a bit that you can't buy loose veg tho. If I only need a couple of carrots or something it is cheaper to go elsewhere and just get what we need.

MayhemMostDays · 02/07/2014 20:21

The veg from my local market barely lasts until I get it home it's that poor quality.

BumWad · 02/07/2014 20:23

Yes

Black spots on the radishes

My fruit and veg from Lidl never goes off any quicker Confused. I buy a sack of onions and they last 3-4 weeks, carrots at least a week, nectarines, grapes, lemons, bananas are all fab. Maybe it's your store?

Lelivre · 02/07/2014 20:40

Summer - maybe lidl is better I don't go there as it's that bit further but maybe I should try it.

Yes, we find it goes off quicker - some things are bearable (corn, asparagus) but others aren't worth buying twice (tomatoes have twice gone mouldy within a few days. We luckily have a aldi and sainsburys next door so do bulk of shopping in aldi then rest in sainsburys.

Lookrightnow · 02/07/2014 22:03

Oh the trick is to invest in these bags from Lakeland. Well worth it. Not a gimmick. Definitely work.

Having said that I avoided the super 6 carrots this week. Absolutely rank.

annielostit · 03/07/2014 07:05

I have the veg bags you mentioned LOOK,really worth buying. Generally f&v doesn't have sell buy dates, its a display date for the shop. It shouldn't be stored in the plastic etc, it will always sweat. A cool dry place.best wash and dry it and store in afore mentioned bags or "borrow" the paper mushroom bags they supply.

Openup41 · 03/07/2014 07:17

I bought a lettuce in Lidl - went a browny green colour within three days.

The onions, potatoes, carrots and fruits are fine.

I guess you get what you pay for. We need to cut our shopping bill so I went to Lidl as it is so often raved about. A lot of their products are fine but the quality cannot compare to Sainsbury.

If we could, I would only shop in Sainsbury's, Waitrose and M&S.

TheLeftovermonster · 03/07/2014 07:33

Yes it is very hit and miss. Some fruit and veg is fine, you need to be careful and look when you buy. Seasonal stuff is mostly ok - if you buy strawberries now, they are fine. Pineapples, not quite.
They try to keep prices down buy buying at the cheep end.

Ishouldbeweaving · 03/07/2014 17:12

Aldi - The only thing I've had a problem with is the apples, I struggle to find a bag that doesn't look like it's been kicked around the car park. Potatoes, onions, lettuce, strawberries, grapes have all been fine but the apples are bashed every week.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/07/2014 18:38

I don't have a problem but I buy a lot of frozen veg in iceland.

I've had waitrose carrots go off quickly too but I figured it was because it was organic.

Bunbaker · 03/07/2014 19:07

The only frozen veg I like are peas. I much prefer fresh for other veg as they are watery and tasteless when frozen, especially carrots and sprouts.

MrTumblesBavarianFanbase · 03/07/2014 19:13

Could it be because it is not sprayed/ irradiated? German fruit and veg isn't (think its not allowed) therefore it goes off quicker. Onions and potatoes should last 3 weeks if you don't store them together, apples and carrots should last if not stored touching, but some things just don't keep a full week if not "treated" in some way...

roadwalker · 03/07/2014 19:19

I bought some maris piper pots last week and they had so many black bits I threw more away than I used
I find their free range eggs tasteless too. We only realised when we ran out and I got some from Booths, the difference was incredible

redcrop · 03/07/2014 21:47

Hi we never have a problem with their fruit and veg but then we go really late on a Friday night and pick the fruit and veg that has just come out ready for Saturday morning so we must get it really fresh.

Did an online shop with Tesco not so long ago and their sell by dates were awful -all the next couple of days.

ChuckNovice · 03/07/2014 21:51

I have bought chicken breasts, a whole free range chicken and mince beef in the last month. All have smell rank when I've tried to cook them. To the point of me wretching, all within the sell by date. I have complained and they just say bring the reciept in for a refund. Very annoying. I am giving up with their meat now. Fruit and veg not so bad.

ChuckNovice · 03/07/2014 21:52

And I went out and bought a fridge thermometre to check if it was my fault and my fridge is fine.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 03/07/2014 22:02

Yeah, I find this too. I suppose because of them not putting sell-by dates on the veg, it's all a bit pot luck.

NannyPlumIsMyIdol · 07/07/2014 19:18

Nope, i find Tesco the worst for it tbh. Had Aldi carrots in the fridge for over a week, still fine.

Ladyofthehouse · 07/07/2014 19:20

Never had a problem....find asda worst to be honest!

brightonbirdy · 07/07/2014 22:04

No problem here at all.

Do you all work for Sainsbury's?

trinitybleu · 08/07/2014 15:49

Grapes sometimes go squishy quite quick but otherwise all lovely here. I have heard that some stores are getting coolers for fruit and veg soon. And they use less preservatives than the other supermarkets.

Jinty64 · 13/07/2014 23:50

I've stopped using Aldi I was throwing out so much fruit and veg. Our Morrisons is good.

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 13/07/2014 23:59

This usually comes up on Aldi threads & there seems to be a regional (or something) variation

The produce I get lasts ages! Onions & spuds in a cool dark cupboard are fine for 2 weeks or more; vine cherry toms last out on the counter for even longer; peppers, citrus, apples, mushrooms, broccoli, celery in the fridge are also ok for a couple of weeks.

I'm in E Lancs.
