What happened to all the people saying they would continue wearing facemasks?

I rarely see anyone with a facemask. Even the elderly.

OP posts:

I still see a few round where I live - usually elderly women.

@CleverClogg Do you mean you just want the window by you open or ALL the windows?

just my window next to me.

CleverClogg · 26/11/2023 18:07

I have been ill 6 times since September and one of those was covid. Every time it happens my GCSE students are without a qualified teacher for the duration. There is no replacement available. I was off work for nearly 2 years for cancer treatment and in that whole time no replacement was found.

I think I can open the window on the bus to protect myself and my students

NotReadyForAutumnYet · 27/11/2023 16:14

Not sure OP. Peer pressure?

aletterfromseneca · 27/11/2023 16:17

I still wear them, though usually its because I'm sick with something and need to go out in public and I don't know who around me could be vulnerable. I'm less worried about me personally catching something.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/11/2023 16:23

I wear them because I’ve got severe long Covid and don’t want to catch it again.

Our local nhs trust reintroduced them in hospitals about 6 weeks ago.

I still wear one in supermarkets and public transport.

So many germs around

RuthW · 27/11/2023 16:29

I wear one when I have any bugs or if someone close in the office has a bug.

I wore one for a couple of weeks before my wedding as I didn't want to catch anything.

Lilifer · 27/11/2023 16:52

I never wore one (apart from when they were mandated in public in 2020/2021 - I have yet to get Covid. 🤷‍♀️

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/11/2023 18:34

My parents still do anywhere crowded

SlightlyConcerned23 · 29/11/2023 00:33

I wear one in oncology & chemotherapy departments in hospitals. That’s it. I don’t routinely carry one around any more. If I was asked to wear one somewhere and a mask was provided, I would wear one, even though I am exempt (hearing impaired & the masks interfere with my hearing aids, plus as I wear glasses and get severe hot flashes I get steamed up loads too).

Gingernaut · 29/11/2023 00:39

Still here, wearing it in enclosed spaces, over my nose and mouth.

No over my mouth with the nose showing and not on my chin and neck

silverxylophone · 29/11/2023 00:42

Why are people still so steamed up about the idea of other people taking measures to protect themselves from a virus that has killed 7+ million and maimed many thousands of others, can cause longterm lung damage, affects the cardiovascular system, increases risk of type 2 diabetes, and is thought to lead to long-term neuorological problems like Parkinson's and Alzheimers?

Onand · 29/11/2023 07:57

Looking at the recent clips coming out of China the last few days and the recent uptick in pneumonia cases from this unknown respiratory virus which now appears to be slowly spreading to other countries whether we’ll see recommendations to mask again and if people will heed the advice.

I’m not sure how effective masks are against viral pneumonia, does anyone here know? Especially as it’s impacting children the most, it’s particularly worrying.

AussieManque · 29/11/2023 11:12

@Onand the pneumonia we're seeing is bacterial. The big worry is bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Given TB is also bacterial and masks, especially N95 e.g. 3M Aura respirators, protect effectively against TB, I expect they will protect against this pneumonia too.

NotFastButFurious · 29/11/2023 13:46

Quite a lot of the staff in my local supermarkets are wearing them again. I think everyone on the checkout has had one on the last couple of weeks. A few customers too, mostly elderly but not all. I wonder if some of the people wearing them have got covid at the time.

Edited

Has it been found in the UK yet?

nocoolnamesleft · 29/11/2023 23:51

My biggest exposure is at work (hospital). Damn right I'm still wearing masks there.

CouchCat · 30/11/2023 03:25

@Onand

It's a common bacteria named Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It's always present. At certain times of year, there is an uptick in cases. It's not something to be overly concerned about.

cerisepanther73 · 30/11/2023 03:43

On buses its too bloody freezing 🥶 ice cold to have the windows 🪟 blowing a gale draft of wind through for ventilation for covid

I suffer from Rumertoid athritis and immunity deficiency and i can't cope with buses windows constantly 😫 open like that,
makes me feel quite depressed..

cerisepanther73 · 30/11/2023 03:46

Just put your face mask 😷 on to protect yourself on buses 🚌 if you are fearful of catching covid,

i wish individuals would stop being selfish and expect everyone else to be freezing 🥶 ice cold on extreme draughty unpleasant windows 🪟 on buses experinces,

you allways get selfish ones who do this,

really extremely annoying practice

NotFastButFurious · 30/11/2023 07:22

Where does everyone live that has freezing buses? I need to move there, ours are like a furnace. Absolutely unbearable in a winter coat, meanwhile the driver tends to be sitting there in shirt sleeves! I often get off a stop or two early cos the heat is making me feel ill.

Pippu · 30/11/2023 15:46

I wear one on aeroplanes, no other time. I am immunosuppressed and tend to get quite ill with viruses. I have form for picking a bug up on a plane and would have loved to wear a mask pre covid on flights. Now that it's not unheard of to wear a facemask I do. I wear an FFP3 and I don't care if I'm the only one on the flight wearing a mask (I usually am!).

theDudesmummy · 01/12/2023 11:58

My DD took a plane yesterday and wore a mask as she had a sore throat. Courtesy really.
