What happened to all the people saying they would continue wearing facemasks?

I rarely see anyone with a facemask. Even the elderly.

I'm still wearing mine, and see plenty of other people wearing them too.

I am immunocompromised.

I have a constant battle to keep a window open on the bus, and frequently end up getting off and walking miles and miles to work

You expect people to be ok with windows open on the bus in the middle of winter Confused

Cumbrianlife · 26/11/2023 11:39

I'm vulnerable so still wear one when I'm around people, especially supermarkets,GPs, hospitals, etc. It hasn't stopped being a risk and I've had less other illnesses (that could also put me in hospital) I think too.

SnobblyBobbly · 26/11/2023 11:42

I see quite a few people when I go for cancer treatment and in and around the hospital in general. I suppose as with Covid as it was happening, it just depends on different people's circumstances. Doesn't really matter one way or another to anyone else.

I expect people to be sensible and slightly less selfish.

Recently a fit healthy man in his 30s (who "warned" me he was as soldier) insisted on getting the bus less than two miles to the station with all the windows tight shut, meaning I had to get out and walk.

He could have walked, he is half my age and many times stronger. He was also going less than half my distance. Or he could have put up with the window being open. But no. He had to "pull rank".

My brother who is immunocompromised was attacked for wearing one recently, by a bunch of supposedly grown men.

So it's no wonder is it.

I've been laughed at before, told I'm young and asked what I'm worried about, called a sheep...

AlwaysUnreasonablyFabulous · 26/11/2023 11:49

@CleverClogg that's a cute little completely fabricated story. Why should your made up soldier have to walk or sit freezing because you're panicky about a virus?

Poblano · 26/11/2023 11:50

I saw several people wearing masks on the train yesterday. Usually see a handful of people wearing them if I go to the supermarket. Noticed a lot of staff wearing them in shops yesterday (large UK city), which I haven't seen elsewhere for a while.

Novelhelp · 26/11/2023 11:52

I see a couple a week. I always assume that the people wearing them have covid.

kittensinthekitchen · 26/11/2023 11:56

This month I have spent time in approximately 20 cities and towns across the UK (mostly England).

I saw at least one person wearing a mask in every one of them - mostly public transport

Keeping the windows open on the bus during winter is completely unreasonable. I have an immunocompromised friend who wears a mask on public transport but she would never expect the windows to be kept open just for her. If you choose to get off and walk for miles that is up to you but you cannot expect someone else to walk just to satisfy you.

Guesswho88 · 26/11/2023 12:02

I see about 1 in 100-200.

WYorkshireRose · 26/11/2023 12:02

@CleverClogg You didn't have to. You chose to. It was, as you say, less than 2 miles and you were already wearing a mask. If your anxiety is so severe, then it's your prerogative to get off and walk.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/11/2023 12:03

I noticed that the reception staff were all wearing them again in our dentists last week. DH wore one when shopping when we had Covid a couple of weeks back.

I think I'm going to start wearing one again on public transport if it's crowded and when flying as pretty sure that's where we caught it. I would also be opening windows on bus if it was crowded.

I can understand people saying they would continue wearing them and then not doing it though - it's about what feels 'normal'.

TeenLifeMum · 26/11/2023 12:04

I’d say about a third of patients wear them in our hospital (where I work). Mostly older people. And in A&E we’re asking people to wear masks (we had staffing issues end of October due to covid spreading through the dept).

i think in healthcare settings it’s appropriate.

I'm immunosuppressed too and I am sorry but you are being totally unreasonable.

Dacadactyl · 26/11/2023 12:08

I think most people just wore one cos other people did in the first place.

Now the tide has turned they're not comfortable being the odd ones out!

If I see someone in a face mask now I just assume they currently have covid.

GrumpyPanda · 26/11/2023 12:10

They've gone back to requiring surgical masks or better at our local university hospitals (not UK.) If case numbers continue I expect doctors' surgeries will follow suit. Very occasionally see them at the supermarket but expect it's more on public transport and that's where I'd definitely put one on as well.

dutysuite · 26/11/2023 12:13

I had an eye test the other day and the optician was wearing a face mask. The only time I'd wear one was if I was requested to during a hospital appointment, but I wouldn't voluntarily wear one.

I work in a supermarket so see a lot of people coming and going all day, I'd say this is probably about right

IWIllDoItNowInAMinute · 26/11/2023 12:16

I see quite a few elderly/wheelchair users use them in my town.
I currently have a cold but am well enough to be out with it. I went to an outdoor event a couple of days ago and the people made a circular gap right around me so no one stood near me, so I think there are still cautious people around.
I was one of the overly cautious mask wearers who went everywhere with a bottle of antibac originally, but I don’t think about it at all now.

TLDRfuckers · 26/11/2023 12:16

Perhaps they all died of stupidity?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 26/11/2023 12:16

How do you know that? and if it's less than two miles, what's the issue with you walking it rather than him?

Mombie · 26/11/2023 12:19

I’m immunosupressed and wear one in supermarkets and busy places and I’m usually the only one. Sometimes I get funny looks and people avoid me thinking I’m the one with the lurgy which works nicely for me!
When I’m at the hospital most people have one on. I go to get my bloods taken regularly and there are signs everywhere for people to mask up and most do but there are always a few who don’t and will sit there coughing and spluttering away in a room full of very ill people. That is annoying.

EarthlyNightshade · 26/11/2023 12:20

Do you know anyone who said they were going to continue? Did you ask them why they stopped?
My plan had been to wear one if I was ill or if I was visiting someone vulnerable who wanted me to. In reality though, I now only wear one when I am dusting behind the computer.
I see one or two on most trips out where I see a fair few people.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 26/11/2023 12:24

I still see people wearing them especially on buses and in supermarkets

i assume they either have covid or are immunocomprimised
