What happened to all the people saying they would continue wearing facemasks?

I rarely see anyone with a facemask. Even the elderly.

Wish I'd worn one when taking a flight a few weeks ago. Quite a few people at the airport and on the plane were wearing them. On that journey I picked up my latest bout of Covid. Nothing too worrying but it's left me feeling exhausted.

Novelhelp · 26/11/2023 12:27

Do you know anyone who said they were going to continue? Did you ask them why they stopped?

A family member as constantly moaning that masks should be compulsory because she is immunocompromised and would like to travel. Therefore everyone on planes should be made wear them etc.
I’ve noticed she wears one occasionally, imo when her high anxiety levels are higher than usual. I’m very reluctant to ask her why she doesn’t wear them all the time as her views are that it is on others to protect HER.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 26/11/2023 12:28

My partner still does but is often the only person in the space who has one on. I took one to wear when I went for an ultrasound and had 3 members of staff at the hospital tell me I don't have to wear it anymore.

CwmYoy · 26/11/2023 12:29

We do inside and in crowds. Immuno-compromised.

Wouldn't have to if infected people wore them.

witchypaws · 26/11/2023 11:44

I've been laughed at before, told I'm young and asked what I'm worried about, called a sheep...

This would happen constantly in Brighton.
When I see someone wearing one, I assume they have their reasons. And wearing one in hospital waiting rooms and on public transport when you're coughing and sneezing is just considerate.

Also- I don't actually remember 'all the people' saying they'd continue wearing one anyway... many many words have been put in the mouths of those supporting sensible pandemic measures during a pandemic.

theduchessofspork · 26/11/2023 12:30

I do wish post-Covid we’d adopted the Japanese habit of wearing a mask when you have a cold.

It’s a really good one.

Floralnomad · 26/11/2023 12:32

I still see at least a few people everyday in masks . I generally assume that they have covid and don’t wish to share it rather than they are protecting themselves so I always give them a wide berth .

Bluesheep8 · 26/11/2023 12:32

I wear one as I’m immunocompromised.

Wearing a mask protects others rather than the wearer doesn't it?

Blinkityblonk · 26/11/2023 12:34

I very rarely wear a mask, in with students all the time, virus soup! I wore one recently to drive my dd around when I had a stinking and sneezy cold, mum does the same if she has a cold. We wear them to protect each other from colds/flu occasionally, especially for my mum who is older and gets floored by them. Usually she wouldn't come if we are ill, I'm talking the tail end of a cold. I find them useful but embarrassing to wear when so few others are doing so. Quite a few of the Chinese students do in line with their cultural norms, I wish we had taken the best parts of mask wearing here.

Not if you wear an FFP2 one

Onand · 26/11/2023 12:37

Lots of people choosing to wear them in Manchester. We have a large Chinese student community and some of those wear them as do plenty of other people, enough to see a few per day in the shops. Given how horribly packed the city is at the moment with Christmas markets I suppose it’s a piece of mind for those uncomfortable being in busy places.

The sad reality is we should all probably be wearing a high quality mask given how businesses and organisations still refuse to acknowledge how Covid is airborne and the importance of proper air filtration. The long term impact of repeated infections is still unknown so maybe those still wearing masks are onto something?

WellDuh · 26/11/2023 12:40

Got one woman who regularly comes in to where I work. She still wears a mask and the exact same pair of marigolds she's worn the whole time. They were filthy dirty in lockdown and even worse now! All her bank cards and money are kept in manky plastic money bags.

Other than that there's one or 2 who wear them once in a while so I'm assuming when they're ill/got covid.

Quarantino · 26/11/2023 12:41

I wear a filter mask on buses and trains and any really crowded indoor space. I see others doing so on transport.

I do see overseas students wearing them too even just walking around outside.

I assume anyone wearing a cloth mask has a cold/ symptoms otherwise they don't really protect the wearer.

BoobyDazzler · 26/11/2023 12:44

it’s very rare to see anyone with a mask on where I live, I think I maybe say one a week, usually in the supper market.

StaunchMomma · 26/11/2023 12:45

I see quite a lot of people wearing masks on the day to day at the moment. Mostly pensioners.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/11/2023 12:49

I wore a mask (actually wore two masks at the same time) when I had covid back in May and still had to drive my kids on the school run. Hated it though, and was glad it was just a few days. But really wanted to do my best to avoid the kids getting sick as they had events coming up.

I usually walk round our indoor city centre every lunch at work, passing hundreds if not thousands of people and in that hour I might see 2 or 3 masks, sometimes none. Usually either elderly folk or people who are disabled.

I hate masks, I hate the feeling of something over my face. But it would be nice if people who were full of cold and snotting over everything wore one, and improved personal hygiene in general.

Perhaps they all died of stupidity?

The people who used to wear masks died? Why would that be?

mondaytosunday · 26/11/2023 12:53

I see some, mostly Asians. Even in the park! I don't know anyone personally who said they'd keep wearing one. I could live the rest of my life not hugging or even shaking anyone's hand, but that mask! I was very happy to get rid of it.

AussieManque · 26/11/2023 13:04

Isn't it funny that those who get called sheep are the ones still masking? I would argue those who dumped masks are the sheep. And look where we are now...

At a minimum they should be mandatory for everyone in hospitals, given the crazy levels of hospital acquired infection. But it's sensible to wear an n95 in any enclosed public space, or busy outdoor space like a street market or concert.

We're just creating a long term health disaster for ourselves and our kids.

“The oncoming burden of LongCovid faced by patients, health-care providers, governments and economies is so large as to be unfathomable, which is possibly why minimal high-level planning is currently allocated to it.” https://www.nature.com/articles/s41577-023-00904-7

Perhaps they all died of stupidity?

What a strange comment. Are you suggesting that people who wear masks are stupid?

I still wear a mask when I'm in shops, medical settings etc and I continue to avoid crowded indoor spaces.

I have a vulnerable husband (history of strokes) and I am a carer for an adult son with a long-term condition and co-morbidities which could further compromise his health if he were to catch Covid.

I wear a mask to protect them and me. If I am ill there is no-one to look after them. If my husband caught Covid and developed cardio-vascular complications or blood clots, another stroke could kill him or leave him significantly disabled. Then I would be a full time carer for two family members.

So if you do think that people who wear masks (and by masks, I mean well fitting FFP2/3) are stupid, just stop for a moment and consider who they might need to protect.

If I have misunderstood and what you meant was that those who didn't continue to mask "have all died from stupidity" because it would have been prudent to continue to mask, then I apologise for misconstruing your post.

COVID-19 and Kidney: The Importance of Follow-Up and Long-Term Screening

Abstract
Renal involvement and kidney injury are common in COVID-19 patients, and the symptoms are more severe if the patient already has renal impairment. Renal involvement in COVID-19 is multifactorial, and the renal tubule is mainly affected, along with podocyte injury during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Inflammation, complement activation, hypercoagulation, and crosstalk between the kidney and lungs, brain, and heart are contributory factors. Kidney injury during the acute phase, termed acute kidney injury (AKI), may proceed to chronic kidney disease if the patient is discharged with renal impairment. Both AKI and chronic kidney disease (CKD) increase mortality in COVID-19 patients. Further, COVID-19 infection in patients suffering from CKD is more severe and increases the mortality rate. Thus, it is important to address both categories of patients, either developing AKI or CKD after COVID-19 or previously having CKD, with proper management and treatment. This review discusses the pathophysiology involved in AKI and CKD in COVID-19 infection, followed by management and treatment of AKI and CKD. This is followed by a discussion of the importance of screening and treatment of CKD patients infected with COVID-19 and future perspectives to improve treatment in such patients.

I still see a few wearing them. There is someone in my workplace who is immune compromised, and they were a mask when working on the main floor.

lesdeluges · 26/11/2023 13:30

I use one at the doctor's surgery, I just feel safer or something.

Always on a plane, but that's more to do with being able to sleep, dribble and be open mouthed without frightening the lives out of my fellow passengers!

Keeping the windows open on the bus during winter is completely unreasonable. I have an immunocompromised friend who wears a mask on public transport but she would never expect the windows to be kept open just for her. If you choose to get off and walk for miles that is up to you but you cannot expect someone else to walk just to satisfy you.

keeping windows open to limit spread of infections is totally reasonable. So people have to put their coats back on on the bus. So what? big deal. or people get ill, and classes go without teachers, and care homes go without carers, and hospitals go without staff, and buses and trains are without drivers, and no one can get to work, and people's lives are put in danger

or people put their coats back on on the bus
