Would you comment on a non-mask wearer when in public?

If you passed a fit young person coming into a busy venue as you were exiting, and that person wasn't wearing a mask, would you say anything to them?

I wouldn't because you've got no way of knowing if that person is exempt. It is also possible the person does have a mask and had simply forgotten to slip it on. I think they will pretty soon notice others wearing masks and it will remind them if that's the case.

I've witnessed other people making comments to non mask wearers when in public though.

FFS Hmmwhat have we become?

Just no, OP.

@RedCandyApple

Yes I did I told him I was exempt he didn’t not care. I asked him why he was only being rude to me and not the two men on the bus not wearing a mask either and he said “because you have children “ I was with my children on the bus, I told him it’s because he’s a coward that only picks on women
He actually said that thinking it was an excuse?!

I saw a man try to pick a fight with a teenage girl about her not wearing a mask. She got very upset, I stepped in and he called me a racist slur.

Even before that, I'd have said anyone asking a non mask wearer for their exemption info is just bullying. Interestingly, no one in the carriage cared until the racist slur came out. They were fine with him being all up in her face, literally.

THisbackwithavengeance · 27/12/2021 16:10

Honestly?

I wouldn't say a word, not my business, but I'd assume they were probably taking the piss. I can't say I care that much tbh.

Let's be real here: how many medical conditions are there that mean you absolutely can't wear a mask for 5 minutes in a shop or whilst sat on a bus?

Not that many. And yet a significant percentage of the population are self diagnosed as "exempt". I think a lot of people have confused not being able to wear a mask with not wanting to or finding it uncomfortable or hot.

I wonder how many people in Communist China "can't" wear masks?

I say this as someone who did a train journey the other day without a mask. No medical exemption; the mask in my bag was broken beyond repair and I had forgotten to pick up another one. Luckily, no-one said anything.

Siameasy · 27/12/2021 16:11

No I wouldn’t
“Don’t worry about what he’s doing worry about what you’re doing”

cherryonthecakes · 27/12/2021 16:12

No and I don't expect staff to do so either unless it's a medical setting.

Not just communist China. In lots of countries these exemptions just don't exist.

Life's not fair all of the time. We don't like to accept that here.

Wizzbangfizz · 27/12/2021 16:14

I absolutely would not and I wouldn't care to be honest - each to their bloody own. I wear one begrudgingly - I didn't when they lifted the restrictions but now they are back I will adhere to "the rules".

ElizabethG81 · 27/12/2021 16:14

Wouldn't say a word, it's none of my business and I'm not a sanctimonious arsehole.

LumosSolem · 27/12/2021 16:15

We truly are fucked as a society if people think it would be better to have the kind of enforcement and control seen in China.

In response to the OP- no I would never say anything, and no, I don't even care.

It's none of my business, it's no one else's business. Frankly I have real problems to worry about.

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/12/2021 16:15

@FlowerArranger

I don't get this concept of 'exemptions'. Where I live there are no exemptions. Everyone over the age of 2 has to wear a mask.
What’s not to get? It’s a fairly easy concept even if you disagree with it. I wear a mask, and disagree with not having exemptions, but I get the concept.

No, I wouldn’t comment on someone not wearing a mask, because I am not a dick.

In Communist China you don't have a choice. I'm pleased that I don't live somewhere like that!

It's your business if he or she infects you, by not wearing a mask and standing too close.
Wizzbangfizz · 27/12/2021 16:15

Jesus Christ - aspiring to be more like China - I've read it all now.

This just about sums it up 😁
lesenfantsdelesperance · 27/12/2021 16:16

No.
But I came close earlier in the year, I guess. Somebody was trying to sell me insulation in an indoor shopping with mask under his nose. I said I wouldn't trust somebody who couldn't even get wearing a mask right. Bit arsey. But on the other hand, it's not the same when it's under the nose, it's clearly not somebody who's exempt.

PlanktonsComputerWife · 27/12/2021 16:16

Only if I were a masochist looking for a mouthful of abuse.

Where I live, to be exempt you have to see a doctor and get a certificate. For that reason, I would never say anything to anybody who wasn't wearing one. I have not seen anybody not wearing one where they should be though (such as in a shop).
LumosSolem · 27/12/2021 16:19

Thank god we don't live in a country where everyone over the age of 2 has to wear a mask. That is absolutely awful.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 27/12/2021 16:19

No, but then I live with one.

im medically excempt, the only time i say anything is when i see people with their nose hanging out! what is the point of that? you either wear it correctly or not at all.

my daughter works in retail in a baby shop, the amount of times you get famillies that come in of all different age groups, and clearly fit enough they have just tken the veiw of no mask no entry! its protect the pregnant women and newborns that come into the shop

RedCandyApple · 27/12/2021 16:20

He actually said that thinking it was an excuse?!

I think he was trying to pass it off as me setting a bad example to them rather than openly admitting he was targeting me for being a woman on my own with children but I know that’s what it really was

TheScenicWay · 27/12/2021 16:21

I don’t say anything as it’s not my place and as for 2 yr olds wearing mask, it is so wrong.

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/12/2021 16:21

Where I live, to be exempt you have to see a doctor and get a certificate

Leaving masks aside, I am jealous of people who live in countries where doctors can do this - not because I particularly want them to, just because they must have more availability. My GP will only book appointments if it is an “acute medical emergency.”

ElizabethG81 · 27/12/2021 16:22

It's your business if he or she infects you, by not wearing a mask and standing too close.

I don't really care though, I've had 2 vaccinations plus a booster so I've taken care of my own health as much as I can. I'm not anxious about catching it, and if I was anxious about it to the extent that I would start telling random people off in shops, then I'd stay at home.

Look after yourselves and stop obsessing over what other people are or are not doing, and whether or not that conforms to your own authoritarian views about how people should behave.

SickAndTiredAgain · 27/12/2021 16:23

I’ve never understood this view, maybe it’s someone who, for whatever reason, finds wearing it over mouth and nose impossible but thinks they’ll try their best?
