Would you comment on a non-mask wearer when in public?

If you passed a fit young person coming into a busy venue as you were exiting, and that person wasn't wearing a mask, would you say anything to them?

I wouldn't because you've got no way of knowing if that person is exempt. It is also possible the person does have a mask and had simply forgotten to slip it on. I think they will pretty soon notice others wearing masks and it will remind them if that's the case.

I've witnessed other people making comments to non mask wearers when in public though.

@92miles
The problem is though that they could be medically exempt.The announcements on some public transport do refer to this and the fact that it may not be apparent that the person is exempt.

It's so strange how people who are 'exempt' seem to travel in groups with loads of other people, each of whom is also 'exempt'. Such a coincidence.

Herschell · 27/12/2021 16:50

No I don't confront strangers about anything so I'm not about to start now. It would probably be dealt with by staff/security where I live though.

FestiveMelts · 27/12/2021 16:52

No, I couldn't care less. In fact I think anyone who does is a self-righteous weirdo, and would be about any number of things given half the chance.

twelly · 27/12/2021 16:52

@LumosSolem

In a number of Asian countries wearying a mask is a requirement - no exceptions. I think there should be clarity either its a rule or it isn't - and if it is the rule people wear a mask then that is what they must do. If not then obviously people please themselves.

I understand that for some people it might be difficult to wear a mask but I believe the reasons for not wearing a mask are marginal reasons - if faced with the reality you can either go in to a shop with a mask or you aren't allowed in people will weigh up the two options and that is the same for most decisions we make. I think by giving a cop out and an exemption the government has been divisive. We haves some people who believe that those who don't wear a mask to be irresponsible while some those who don't complain about the self righteous behaviour and the way mask wears sometimes think they are entitled.

The problem with the first lockdown was that there were so many exceptions that it didn't work - things only work if everyone complies. Hence in this country a herd approach was the best option.

@Indoctro

Nope I'd just secretly think to myself they are a d*
Me too. The whole medical exemption thing is a joke. Anyone can decide they are medically exempt at any time. It’s not like these people are legitimately given an exemption. As for those ridiculous lanyards that people wear, they can be bought from Amazon so don’t mean a thing either.

Given all that I’m sure many people that don’t wear one won’t have a genuine reason. They aren’t pleasant to wear, certainly not for any length of time. I’m still breathless and recovering from covid some 13 months later but I wear a mask as required. I’m sure I could exempt myself but I’d rather be cautious and wear one.

EmmaWoodhousestreehouse · 27/12/2021 16:56

I wouldn’t confront someone for not wearing one though. I’d just think my thoughts internally.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 27/12/2021 16:57

I've been confronted a few times. One particularly gobby woman demanded I explain to her young daughter why I thought I was so special. I got as far as asking her if she knew what rape was before her mother bundled her off with a muttered apology.

VikingOnTheFridge · 27/12/2021 16:59

@Iamthewombat

The law allows exemptions for exempt people. Not for one second do I believe that the woman I challenged was (1) medically exempt, (2) incapable of wearing a mask for a short while or (3) justified in coughing over a 90 year old woman she decided to stand in close proximity to.
But bearing in mind you actually have no idea of the answer to any of those questions, what you believe means absolutely fuck all.
LumosSolem · 27/12/2021 17:01

@twelly it's only been divisive in this country because frankly some people are self righteous sanctimonious tears who can't mind their own business and who can't imagine things outside their own little bubble, and why it may be difficult for some to wear a mask.

I actually think the UK has got the balance right on masks. Most people, certainly the vast majority where I live, wear masks. But we allow medical exemptions and this doesn't require the utter waste of a doctors time to do this.

I'm very, very glad to live in a country which doesn't try to exert control on its population like other countries do.

lesenfantsdelesperance · 27/12/2021 17:01

There's always one. How would YOU justify coughing over an elderly woman then @VikingOnTheFridge? Don't wear a mask? Keep your distance.

RedCandyApple · 27/12/2021 17:02

I had another one on the bus I just remembered where my daughter was sat behind me and a woman sat next to her, another woman walked past and told me my daughter is sitting next to people (the woman sat next to her!) so should be wearing a mask, she’s 10 so doesn’t have to wear one, she’s also autistic, people need to mind their own business

Hahahahah....speaking of a country that didn't allow people to see their own parents for months on end.

Itsmybaby · 27/12/2021 17:03

No because how would you know they’re fit?

I try and wear a mask as much as possible but sometimes I just can’t tolerate them at all even for a few minutes. I have a heart condition and have passed out multiple times in my local supermarket because of wearing a mask. I’m young and look fit and healthy.

VikingOnTheFridge · 27/12/2021 17:03

@lesenfantsdelesperance

You are entirely unqualified to ascertain whether she was able to control the cough. Given that coughing uncontrollably is a thing, you are making assumptions.
Chloemol · 27/12/2021 17:04

No, but I would make sure I wouldn’t go near them

Tinsellittis · 27/12/2021 17:04

@CarrieBlue

I wouldn’t say anything, but I’d give them a hard stare
Is that you Paddington? 🐻
lesenfantsdelesperance · 27/12/2021 17:05

Why are your disposable masks so expensive in the UK? I do not understand. Where I live, I pay less than £2 for 50. And we do have plenty of recycling points, before anybody asks.

LumosSolem · 27/12/2021 17:06

@sofasonmondays I said like other countries- do you fancy living under the kind of restrictions enforced in china then?

I never agreed with a lot of the restrictions here but it's still been more balanced than other countries. Spain ffs, who locked up children. Disgraceful.

lesenfantsdelesperance · 27/12/2021 17:08

It doesn't matter so much whether you hold in a cough at a distance, does it, @VikingOnTheFridge ? Do you also indulge in this inconsiderate behaviour? It's not that hard to keep your distance in a TK Maxx, it's not exactly corner shop size, is it? The women could have just kept a reasonable distance given that, for whatever reason, she wasn't wearing a mask. It's just what a reasonable person does.

clarepetal · 27/12/2021 17:08

I remember reading on here at the beginning of the pandemic a lady was shopping in lidl and not wearing a mask. She found it traumatic as she had been raped and a man had a massive go at her for not wearing the mask.
That really upset me and I will never judge someone now, you have no idea why someone may not be able to wear one. Can't remember if she explained to the man (arsehole) but I was so angry!

ElectraBlue · 27/12/2021 17:09

No, as I like to mind my own business...

Being young and looking 'fit' does not mean you don't have a condition that makes you exempt,

Unless you are self-righteous busybody you should stay clear of making comments or giving them 'a hard stare'...

TempsPerdu · 27/12/2021 17:10

Most certainly not - none of my business.

Chanel05 · 27/12/2021 17:11

Nope. Not my business.

VikingOnTheFridge · 27/12/2021 17:11

No, I'm not mask exempt and I have always complied with all mask laws. Regardless, you're still completely unqualified to comment on the genuineness of this woman's exemption and things you have made up are meaningless.
KurtWildesChristmasNamechange · 27/12/2021 17:20

Absolutely not.
