Would you comment on a non-mask wearer when in public?

If you passed a fit young person coming into a busy venue as you were exiting, and that person wasn't wearing a mask, would you say anything to them?

I wouldn't because you've got no way of knowing if that person is exempt. It is also possible the person does have a mask and had simply forgotten to slip it on. I think they will pretty soon notice others wearing masks and it will remind them if that's the case.

I've witnessed other people making comments to non mask wearers when in public though.

@JaniieJones

'And let's not even get into who you think 'deserves' to use disabled toilets!'

Those with disabilities? Confused

You sneering is very tedious vampire.

But which disabilities are extreme enough to warrant it?

I'm sure you have an opinion, just as you do about which extreme conditions confer mask exemption!

Topseyt · 30/12/2021 15:01

No. I would not challenge anyone who wasn't wearing a mask. I think anyone who would is a massive twat who clearly has way too much time on their hands.

Leave people alone. You have no idea why they are the way they are.

I struggle badly with masks. So much so that I often just take them off except in medical settings, where I still sometimes have to just lift them a few inches in order to get a few good breaths in.

Masks should be personal choice, not mandatory, although I know that won't be a popular opinion here amongst the mask police.

I dont wear a mask.....often. I can wear one, for short periods. A quick nip into a shop, the 10 minutes it took for me to walk in for my vaccine, the run into the service station to pee.

Any longer than 30 minutes and I struggle. My asthma plays up, then I start to feel panicky knowing I'm going to have to take my mask off and deal with the "looks" which then makes my breathing worse, and so on.

So now, if I know I'm going somewhere that I'll need to have it on for any length of time I dont wear one and wear a lanyard instead.

To the outside eye I look healthy, I'm a martial artist, I am a healthy weight, I'm fairly young looking (not feeling Grin ) and I probably have people think I am a "selfish dick". When the truth is, I tried to do what I could at the beginning. Now I do just what works for me and me alone.

Fruitygal · 30/12/2021 20:01

@Nidan2Sandan buy a visor? If I had asthma I’d invest in FFP2 or FFP3 masks much easier to wear than surgical masks as more comfortable and also will protect you better with asthma

I have asthma and wear an FFP2. My breathing isn’t compromised one iota. Unless in the midst of an attack, there is no reason why any asthmatic cannot wear this design of mask, it’s just another ‘I’m too special’ excuse 🙄

Masks don’t trigger asthma!!

Masks don’t trigger asthma!!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you're clearly not severely asthmatic. You're just an idiot.

SummerBluez · 31/12/2021 10:58

"Masks don't trigger asthma"

For YOU. Masks don't trigger asthma for YOU. YOUR asthma.

Xenia · 31/12/2021 12:31

The exemption in the UK includes where the mask causes you "servere distress". Vast numbers of people fall within that exemption for starters. I wish we could just move back to voluntary use of masks in shops, trains, planes etc however.

ScottishTinydancer321 · 31/12/2021 12:34

I wouldn’t go up to someone to comment BUT if they decides to lean over me I would prob get a little annoyed. The amount of non mask wearers that thought it was ok to lean over my pram (with a new born in side drove me to insanity!).
Don’t wear a mask but try and stay a safe distance away from mask wearers as you have no idea why they are wearing one 🤷🏼‍♀️

ScottishTinydancer321 · 31/12/2021 12:37

Also my family members can smoke 20 a Day but their asthma is to bad for a mask 😂🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

DynamiteFilledRadish · 31/12/2021 12:49

Having worked at a vaccine centre for a year I have seen only 1 person refuse to wear a mask coming in for a vaccine - anyone mask exempt gets given a visor to wear

Really? Why? What use is a visor? They are completely ineffective!

Lacedwithgrace · 31/12/2021 13:01

Yes, unless they have a mask exempt lanyard (not the sunflower one) I'll offer them one

Spikeyball · 31/12/2021 13:45

"Yes, unless they have a mask exempt lanyard (not the sunflower one) I'll offer them one."

Why not the sunshine one? There is no official mask exempt lanyard.

Sportslady44 · 31/12/2021 14:16

No i wouldnt its up to the store.

Fruitygal · 31/12/2021 16:04

Let’s try an analogy here…. I pick your child up from school for a play date with my child they are both 4… we are going to a ball pit place a short drive away ….I don’t strap my child or yours into a car seat or booster because they find them restricting and uncomfortable and let’s face it only 0.0022% of people die in road accidents per year so I’ve decided to exercise my free choice not to use seat belts and child car seats …… you don’t mind do you?

RichTeaRichTea · 31/12/2021 16:43

Not a good enough analogy, sorry. Find a different one, or just don’t bother with analogies maybe

Whatever your situation, not wearing a mask is saying ‘my individualistic needs are greater than the needs of the collective whole”.
Whether that is warranted or not is subjective - but you can see why it gets people’s backs up.

2X4B523P · 31/12/2021 18:29

Excellent analogy. Like face masks, you must wear a seat belt unless exempted. In the case of medical seat belt exemption a certificate is required but no such requirement exists for face mask exemptions.

Other exemptions include goods deliveries where the distance traveled between stops is less than 50 meters and taxi drivers who are ‘plying for hire’. Also every driver is exempt from seatbelts when reversing, if they so wish.

"Whether that is warranted or not is subjective - but you can see why it gets people’s backs up."

The concept of reasonable adjustment always gets some people's backs up.

Some people can't wear a mask due to things like Trigeminal Neuralgia (which would already be well documented with their GP anyway). Others can't because of a traumatic experience that causes them to experience distress if something if covering their mouth. If their GP does not know about what happened to them, how are they meant to get an exemption?
