Call an election not a lockdown

Suranjeep · 20/12/2021 16:11

Who else agrees that the current Government appear to have lost any credibility they had left and have lost their mandate to govern.

Rather than calling a lockdown tonight/this week. The PM needs to call an election instead. Sadly the so called opposition are just as bad and already disappeared up Boris’ backside.

I disagree. Who the hell would want to be in charge of any country/nation over the last 2 years?
The current government has made mistakes, and they've done some good things, but you'll only ever remembered for your errors.
If I was in the PMs shoes, I'd be counting down the days to the next election hoping I could put my feet up.

He could of quit, but fair play he's stuck at it and kept going.

Tinsellittis · 20/12/2021 16:18

Oh do behave Hmm

Scottishgirl85 · 20/12/2021 16:21

Yes great idea to have us all gathering at polling stations during the most infectious time of the pandemic. There is no time for an election now, whatever your views. It would be a ridiculous distraction at the most critical time.

But he will appear on TV at some point in the next few days and tell people to shut their businesses, and keep away from family for Christmas. “To protect the NHS and save lives”

Yet the PM himself and many more there will do as they want as they have done all along.

Well if the 'opposition are just as bad' what would you do if there was an election? Confused

Suranjeep · 20/12/2021 16:26

Bar any current MP from standing

OP posts:
DaisyNGO · 20/12/2021 16:28

@Suranjeep

Bar any current MP from standing
You won't find many takers.

I think an election would be even more divisive and Labour would have us in perpetual lockdowns.

Immaculatemisconception · 20/12/2021 16:30

Honestly @Suranjeep, hasn't the whole country got enough to contend with at present? Bad idea.

PilesEdgeworth · 20/12/2021 16:30

Bar any current MP from standing
And how many MPs do you think will choose to vote that into law?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/12/2021 16:31

Erm...

luckylavender · 20/12/2021 16:32

@DaisyNGO - you should listen to the facts not the Tory propaganda.

Suranjeep · 20/12/2021 16:34

Piers Corbyn for PM

OP posts:
LubaLuca · 20/12/2021 16:36

I think there are enough people in this country who see Johnson as an aspirational figure that an election wouldn't dint the Tories' standing. I had a conversation with a neighbour who thinks he's great, that everyone likes to take the piss at work and that anybody would have struggled to make Brexit work (the Brexit that this neighbour wanted) 🤦

So no, an election is not what I want. It would be a waste of time and money, and a distraction nobody needs right now. I would rather the party ousted BJ and put someone trustworthy and capable in his place. I do realise the options are limited.

titchy · 20/12/2021 16:36

@Suranjeep

Piers Corbyn for PM
Do you hate the NHS or something?
Notonthestairs · 20/12/2021 16:36

Grin very funny.

sjxoxo · 20/12/2021 16:36

I wouldn’t mind one- I’d never choose Boris so I’d be happy at a chance to get them out tbh. I find their behaviour shocking & I’m amazed more people aren’t up in arms about it. I don’t think labour would have us in ‘perpetual’ lockdown as pp has said; but they may well attempt to better fund the NHS and stop giving public contracts to their mates on a whim, and look at reforming the tax system also welcome by me. Can’t be worse than what we already have which resembles some sort of Sesame Street Christmas Pandemic Special. Xo

DottyHarmer · 20/12/2021 16:37

Piers Corbyn for PM? He’d be stuck for somewhere to sit as I believe he was calling on people to burn down MPs’ offices…..

Bitofachinwag · 20/12/2021 16:37

How will an election stop the spread?

luckylavender · 20/12/2021 16:39

@Whammyyammy - is that you Carrie?

BellaChagall · 20/12/2021 16:39

I'm no fan of Johnson but we can't just call a general election every 5 minutes when we don't like what the government is doing.

Suranjeep · 20/12/2021 16:40

@Bitofachinwag

How will an election stop the spread?
It would divert the press and end the hysteria. No media hysteria = no being forced into lockdown by media hysteria

But that’s what they appear to do, call an election when they don’t like what they are doing.

Cameron, May, Johnson.

OP posts:
sjxoxo · 20/12/2021 16:47

@Bitofachinwag it wouldn’t ‘stop the spread’
as that’s not the principal aim of a general election; but it would mean better funding for the NHS and better spending on public services & infrastructure, which would enable us to weather any pandemic better and lose less people along the way.

Agree @Suranjeep that they indeed call an election when they don’t like how things are going; and also strategically just before they think the shit will hit the fan, which ensures they stay in power at their time of most weakness- or to phrase differently, when they would be most likely to lose. xo

friendlycat · 20/12/2021 16:47

The last thing this country needs at present is a General Election.
I'm no Boris Johnson supporter but now just is not the right time.

Many other countries in Europe are having to impose restrictions, it's not just our Government.

Of course it's awful to see the gatherings that took place last year. It's shameful of our Government yes, but it's not a very sensible reason for others to then say that because of what happened a year ago that any new restrictions that need to be temporarily placed should not now be followed.

They will only potentially inflict more spread between themselves, their loved ones, friends and family and the wider public they come in contact with. They won't be "winning" in any sense by "getting one over" on the government and officials. It's just juvenile to think so.
