Call an election not a lockdown

Who else agrees that the current Government appear to have lost any credibility they had left and have lost their mandate to govern.

Rather than calling a lockdown tonight/this week. The PM needs to call an election instead. Sadly the so called opposition are just as bad and already disappeared up Boris’ backside.

What do you really think labour would have done differently? I’m as fed up of the government as anyone at the moment, but I can’t imagine anyone actjvely wanting to lead the country through this mess

DaisyNGO · 20/12/2021 16:53

OP if you're looking for no more lockdown, Labour won't help.

cherryonthecakes · 20/12/2021 16:54

Labour are more keen on lockdowns and restrictions than Johnson and I'm not convinced people would actually vote for them

Cam77 · 20/12/2021 16:56

@friendlycat
but it's not a very sensible reason for others to then say any new restrictions that need to be temporarily placed should not now be followed

Well, it’s not really about should or shouldn’t be followed. It’s about will or won’t be followed. The government has blown what little trust and credibility they still had. The bad behavior and subsequent denialism and gaslighting is a huge breach of public trust. Covid has sometimes been likened to a war, perhaps incorrectly. But if we do run with that term, I’d say you can’t effectively wage a war when the leaders have lost all trust and respect of those who are meant to follow them. It’s just basic sociology and psychologically.

Tories would win again....

Labour are all over the place and worse than Boris and co.

And great idea to have a GE where people are mixing in the polling booths. As someone else said you cannot call a GE because you want something different every year...

Franklin12 · 20/12/2021 16:59

Labour want more and more control. Look at Sturgeon. She seems to wallow in all of this.

Cam77 · 20/12/2021 17:00

@Woofydogg
Well if we rewind back to Feb/March 2020, I think it’s fair to say Labour would have done a hell of a lot different at that time. No, it probably wouldn’t have changed the long term game all that much, but a timely lockdown in March 2020 - aka in the mold of the whole rest of the continent of Europe (including Ireland) would have saved many lives. The initial (lack of) response from the conservatives was catastrophic, almost farcical. People have short memories.

No they’re really not. And recent polls put them comfortably ahead.

VikingOnTheFridge · 20/12/2021 17:01

@Suranjeep

Piers Corbyn for PM
There aren't a lot of people who are even less attractive options for PM than Boris, but you've found one.
luckylavender · 20/12/2021 17:02

@Woofydogg - I can tell you what Labour in Wales has done. Have they made mistakes? Yes, all governments have. Does everyone love Drakeford? No. Do most people respect Drakeford because he's provided clear leadership, has formed a coalition when he didn't need to and has worked hard and relentlessly to keep Wales safe with very clear guidelines? Yes.

luckylavender · 20/12/2021 17:03

@Franklin12 - Sturgeon isn't a Labour politician.

luckylavender · 20/12/2021 17:04

@cherryonthecakes - try looking at the facts and not relying on the Tory press.

Yeah the plastic over aisles of supermarkets was his highlight of Covid

@Suranjeep - at least he gives a shit.

Suranjeep · 20/12/2021 17:11

No that was just shit, didn’t achieve anything. Signs of a power hungry dictator in this case worse than Boris as it made no sense.

OP posts:
luckylavender · 20/12/2021 17:14

@Suranjeep - Boris is a lazy feckless chancer.

DottyHarmer · 20/12/2021 17:15

I believe Piers Corbyn was singing about smelling farts through masks on the tube.

Labour? The trouble is they have a lot a lot of substandard MPs, let alone current candidates. The LibDems also have some real thickos. Plus, for those interested, they have some very dubious gender ideas which would not be beneficial to women. That is why I would not touch them/Greens with ten barge poles.

I would favour a brand new party. What happened to Chuka Umunna?

cherryonthecakes · 20/12/2021 17:18
@cherryonthecakes - try looking at the facts and not relying on the Tory press.
They have always backed the government with votes on restrictions and often call for a change in rules as soon as SAGE or independent SAGE publish minutes of their meetings ie before Boris acts.
I'd call that more pro lockdown and restrictions ?

luckylavender · 20/12/2021 17:20

@DottyHarmer - we should line up Tory and Labour MPs and then talk about substandard ones... because from where I'm sitting there's an awful lot of thick, substandard, corrupt blue MPs. Totally terrifying how weak this government is.

luckylavender · 20/12/2021 17:22

@cherryonthecakes - and I'd call it decisive. Swifter action. Who knows how many poor souls we could have saved?

cherryonthecakes · 20/12/2021 17:22

Dominic Raab would be the top of that list

rrhuth · 20/12/2021 17:24

@Suranjeep

Bar any current MP from standing
Confused

You maybe need to read up a little on the British system of government and how our elections work.

But the opposition have agreed current actions.

This is a world wide pandemic and you should feel grateful we have free access to vaccination and tests and investment into new drugs.

Stop making a pandemic a political football .

SoItWas · 20/12/2021 17:27

Now would be a good time, while everyone is still registered, from the voucher scheme.

But the OP sounds like someone who doesn't think that lockdown should be a priority right now and I think that if Labour came to power tomorrow we'd be at least advised to restrict our Christmas mixing.

FWIW I'm not a Tory supporter and want to be able to vote for an alternative but there is no credible opposition right now.
