I've done a few threads like this over the course of the pandemic.

My London borough is 721/100k.

Which area? I'm East Midlands too, but it 'only' 418 in my area.

409/100 000, which translates to 429 actual cases. We're in rural NW England. All of our family in various places down south have got around 1000/100 000, including the ones we'll be staying with over Christmas and the ones we're having here for NY (if that's still allowed...).

@PollyIndia

Also in a London borough and similarly, has gone from 700 to 1500 in just a few days. But hospitalisations have stayed flat, and isn't that also a very important number? My friend is an ICU doc at the royal free and she said they have had the same number of people in since July (I think she said 4), and only 6 now. Royal Free was under crazy pressure last winter, so it isn't currently comparable.
The hospitalisations won't have fed through yet from the big numbers- the estimate is about 10 days from infection. 10 days ago rates were far, far lower and we hardly had any Omicron at all 3 weeks ago. It's exponential growth.

Let's hope they don't feed through, but we don't know yet, we'll find out soon. (crosses fingers and toes)

Hackney's vaccination numbers are so low!

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 22/12/2021 14:24

@mrshoho

Hackney's vaccination numbers are so low!
Yeah. Shock

I imagine that's at least part of why their graph takes off like that at the end there.

Although the other places I looked up are similar at the end, they just had more gradual rises since July.

mrshoho · 22/12/2021 14:32

It's quite worrying. I'm in Harrow and vaccination rates are a fair bit higher here. Our rate is 1008 so currently way lower than Hackney but who knows where it's going? Our cumulative deaths are much higher than Hackney but the majority were from back in the first wave. I can remember how grim it was and I hope so much this won't be what is going to happen.

But do you think the easy availability of postal LFTs has made a difference to the number of positive tests?

Speaking personally I only took one test before December 2021. But have taken them every few days since then.

IWannaWishYouANutNutsChristmas · 22/12/2021 14:53

In London both test positivity and hospital admissions are rising so although testing is up 25% it's clearly not finding enough of the cases. @BeesRGood

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 22/12/2021 14:59

"But do you think the easy availability of postal LFTs has made a difference to the number of positive tests?"

No, because the increase in the number of cases is about 3x the increase in the number of tests. It's a real rise

Our vaccination rates here are some of the best in the country, but our graphs are still showing that near vertical rise after three months of steadily ticking upwards.

Cases are starting to rise in the older age groups here now, too.

And we only have numbers up to the 15th or so with any confidence.

I have a lot of trepidation about the grimness to come. Sad

Even with the vaccines, cases higher than they've ever been is bad news.

And our government can't take effective action because of Conservative Party internal differences. The ERG threats have our Prime Minister too weak and frightened to act.

Over 1600 in my London Borough now but I haven't read anything about increased hospital admissions. It feels like almost everyone has covid but almost everyone I know has mild symptoms.

On a positive note I've noticed that mask wearing in shops and on public transport has increased hugely. I've just been on the tube and everyone in my carriage was wearing a mask! I guess no-one wants to test positive before Xmas.

BeesRGood · 22/12/2021 18:04

2616 in my inner London ward. Up from 2490 the day before - but that's not a huge leap so I think it's peaked!

theemperorhasnoclothes · 23/12/2021 00:19

2857 today - SE.

I do wonder at what point testing is maxed out so that we can't rely on the figures any more. At these rates they must be close to simply not having the slots and lab capacity to cope, surely? And I know lots of people having difficulty getting LFTs around here - it's not impossible, most people manage it in the end but it takes a while, so perhaps not testing as much as they otherwise would be.

RoseAndRose · 23/12/2021 06:22

I've just looked at the London borough that is the worst affected and it rose from 2700 to over 3200 in the last 24 hours (according to the London data store)

National average (BBC) is climbing daily too - it was somewhere in the low 500s last weekend, and is now 728

Good point about test availability - that might be part of the reason that
those currently considered most at risk of severe disease are being sent a PCR kit to keep at home in case (so they can be tested promptly and considered for monoclonal antibody treatment and/or the new retrovirals

Egghead68 · 23/12/2021 10:46
