How do they know that two vaccines are not enough in respect of Omicron?

Tests on blood samples in the lab. Informative but won't tell you everything.

TallulahsCurse · 12/12/2021 21:20

Also it's good to just tell people it's not enough to scare them into submission, when the government know that they've fucked up by having a ton of parties and now have zero authority over anyone.

PassingByAndThoughtIdDropIn · 12/12/2021 21:47

You do realise that not everything in the world is driven by the Westminster Government? That lot couldn't manipulate their way out of a paper bag let alone persuade the political and scientific establishments of three continents to lie in order to help them out of a domestic hole. Let alone Nicola Sturgeon.

Yes I'm being facetious
TerraNovaTwo · 12/12/2021 22:04

I don't understand how they are saying a booster jab for the Delta strain will be up to 75% effective on the omicron strain.

I've been double jabbed, little after a month of catching covid almost a year ago. Shouldn't I be getting a new jab or booster jab specifically for omicron? What's the bloody point?

None of this shit makes sense.

PassingByAndThoughtIdDropIn · 12/12/2021 22:05

I'm glad to hear that, but god knows there's enough people claiming that bollocks with a straight face, so I can be excused for thinking you meant it.

Weirdly enough, they haven't had quite enough time yet to prepare a specific vaccine for a variant that has only been circulating for a few weeks.

The booster isn't for the 'Delta strain', it's for Covid. It just happens that it's a bit less effective for Omicron than it was for Delta.

Your logic is like saying 'why should I wear a seatbelt in the car? They might invent laser seatbelts in the future that don't wrinkle my clothes, so I might wait'.

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 12/12/2021 22:36

Coz people with 2 jabs have died maybe? They will know scientists are very clever.

I noticed that before Boris used to say we will be led by the science. But there was no mention of science in his speech earlier.

There are some early studies on how well Covid vaccines cross-protect against different viral strains - one from John’s Hopkins in March this year suggested that there was likely to be a significant degree of cross protection if the relevant Covid variants were at least 70% genetically similar.

However that was on two other coronavirus variants. You can’t conduct a full study in real time yet with omicron because there’s not been enough time to do so! They are going on lab tests on antibodies and emerging data on real life cases, but the data is still very provisional.

Pensieve · 12/12/2021 22:42

Because they have been testing immunity levels for months so presumably have very good stat models on the average time when a booster is advantageous. Immunity wanes over time, it’s not on one day and gone the next.

It's the timing that puzzles me. I had my booster 6 months after my 2nd jab, all good. But that's already almost 2 months ago, so does that mean I'll soon need another one, as they're now doing boosters 2 months after the 2nd?

megustalacerveza · 12/12/2021 22:49
@megustalacerveza you say "The booster isn't for the 'Delta strain', it's for Covid. It just happens that it's a bit less effective for Omicron than it was for Delta."

yes I'd say under 10% for the AZ jab effectivenss at Omicron and in many medical journals described as " virtually useless" at preventing infection as " a little bit less effective" the understatement of the year
Oh how embarrassing for you...you can't read.

Let's try again. The BOOSTER is a bit less effective for Omicron than it was for Delta.

Get it yet?

Chessie678 · 12/12/2021 22:54

They don’t know about protection against serious illness and death yet. There hasn’t been time to get real world data on that. I suspect they’re thinking that if you have lower or no protection against mild omicron infection with two jabs your protection against serious illness will also likely be lower but I don’t think that’s known.

Samii89 · 12/12/2021 22:54

@megustalacerveza your attitude is disgusting. Ive read alot of your comments the past few days on the covid threads. Who exactly do you think you are speaking to people in that condescending, patronising way? U have a nerve. Get over yourself

I agree. Plus not one of the fuckers at those parties were vaccinated at all and they weren't bloody worried about catching Covid and taking it home to their families over Christmas were they?? So why the panic now?? They're full of shit.
MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2021 22:59

I was just listening to someone speak on this

A recent study showed the booster had an effect

It throws more at slightly mismatched situation and makes up that gap

He said it much better - on LBC about twenty mins ago if anyone wants to hear it

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2021 23:00

If LBC has a replay thing that is

So many things just don’t add up. We’re been treated like mugs.

withgraceinmyheart · 12/12/2021 23:04

@BubblingRiver can I ask why you don’t want endless boosters?

I’ve had the flu vaccine every year my whole life, it’s never seemed endless to me. It stops me getting ill and having to take time out of my life to recover. I feel the same about the covid vaccine, I’ll have one whenever I’m offered one.

I really struggle to understand people who don’t want boosters!

I think it may seem like an alien concept if you are a person that hasn't had an annual
Flu jab. Also the unknown around how frequently the boosters will be needed, could it be more frequent than once per year.

I don't understand the science so it must not be correct.
Mojoj · 12/12/2021 23:15

What's wrong with letting our immune systems do their job? Eat well and exercise. Be the healthiest version of yourself. I don't want to be coerced into getting endless boosters for a virus that I've already had and survived.
