Henrieta2 · 08/12/2021 22:47

Do you think furlough will return ?
I’m worried 😟 how can they tell peoooe to wfh and potentially have people lose jobs because if everyone wfh how can hospitality / cafes / cleaners go to work ???

@GoodnightGrandma

I am reliant on schools being open for my job. If they shut I will be furloughed.
Schools won't shut again unless something absolutely catastrophic happens. They barely closed last time in fairness and I don't think they can justify it again.
rwalker · 09/12/2021 07:21

Don't understand the question they are saying work from home if you can. So if you can't don't .
There not shutting business so why would they offer furlough .

BusBusBus · 09/12/2021 07:21

No. And i think not many will work from home that arent already doing hybrid stuff. A lot will find they must be in.

VikingVolva · 09/12/2021 07:21

I think those who are on the critically vulnerable list (the 500,000 most vulnerable, third primary jab) group should have some form of support so that those who cannot WFH can be furloughed.

I'm not sure it's affordable beyond that.

hygtt · 09/12/2021 07:21

I don't think much will change re wfh but i think psychologically people are going to pull back a bit on eating out, partying etc

hygtt · 09/12/2021 07:22

it's going to hurt the economy regardless

DirtyDancing · 09/12/2021 07:23

No it's not lockdown. It's wfh if you can. It's way softer this time. No furlong the government are absolutely skint more than anyone realises (post Spending Review it's clear). Most people I know still going into the office a few days a week.

This. In previous lockdowns hospitality venues, shops etc were closed, causing people to be furloughed as there was no work to do. These places are not currently being closed so people can still work there. Wfh is only being mandated for those whose job can be done from home. Not sure what will happen with employers who refuse to allow wfh or say that the job can't be done from home even if it can. Not much probably.
hygtt · 09/12/2021 07:27

If the predictions of 1m cases by the end of the month that will surely cause some economic damage though? We have a much older population than SA so don't really know what it will do.

jgw1 · 09/12/2021 07:27

@Eaumyword

They said wfh if you can. If you can't, you carry on as before.
That's only so they can keep having their parties.

Even worse if they are open but stop visitors

You won't as currently there is no furlough. Where I work is also dependant on people going to work. It has just started to get profitable again as the majority had returned to hybrid working. We will see how this week goes but I can't see how we can afford to be kept on.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/12/2021 07:31

It won't but it's going to be bad for sectors like hospitality and travel. Even these small new restrictions will be devastating for them, so many people are cancelling holidays and meals out. I'll be supporting hospitality as much as I can this month.

hygtt · 09/12/2021 07:32

I think so close to christmas many offices will just move straight to wfh, my DH just received an email saying don't come in, he was hybrid.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 09/12/2021 07:34

It’s wfh if you can , I don’t think it will effect that many . I can wfh I have during lockdown but back in office full time since March so I think I’ll carry on in the office because that’s where they want me and that’s fine for me . Unless they close industry’s and I don’t think they will they won’t bring back furlough. To me it sounds like restrictions what they can without effecting the economy too much .

hygtt · 09/12/2021 07:34

@Waxonwaxoff0 it's so difficult though isn't it. I want to go out so bad & have a few things booked but I don't want to ruin my xmas by being ill or having to self isolate. I'm in London & want to spend it with family this yr.

Howshouldibehave · 09/12/2021 07:36

I dont understand what you don't understand? Posters have very clearly stated examples of work canteens. Canteen workers obviously can not wfh. Office workers can. If no office workers are in they will not be using the canteen. The canteen staff will have no work - there'll be a knock on effect to catering suppliers and food production.

Understandable. I'm a single parent and it's just me and DS this Christmas so I don't have that worry thankfully.

RaininSummer · 09/12/2021 07:49

I don't think much is going to change as many who can are already working from home. Can't see my office closing as they have been fine with us working in slightly distanced but airless building with the public coming and going since last March.

KevinTheKoala · 09/12/2021 07:51

I'm a waitress and already my hours are being cut because their are less people eating out and I'm terrified of how little money I will have in January. If furlough returns it will surely mean another lockdown though and I think that thought scares me more. The hospitality sector won't survive many more restrictions, and so thousands of people might soon be out of a job.

Stuffin · 09/12/2021 07:52

I don't think it will.

I plan on visiting some pubs and restaurants and hoping enough people do to keep them afloat.

School nurses, vaccination teams etc.
WaltzingTilda · 09/12/2021 08:01

I don't think so, not unless Omricon turns out to be a killer that is killing hundreds per day. I think their advise is to work from home if you can. If you can't then you'll have to go in.
