Henrieta2 · 08/12/2021 22:47

Do you think furlough will return ?
I’m worried 😟 how can they tell peoooe to wfh and potentially have people lose jobs because if everyone wfh how can hospitality / cafes / cleaners go to work ???

OP posts:
ElectraBlue · 09/12/2021 08:09

No.

We simply can't afford it and there was a high level of fraud going on with companies claiming when frankly they did not need to...

I would like to think some of that fraudulent activity was put to an end when they brought in some checks so employees could see if they had been furloughed and were still being asked to work. I'm sure I read somewhere that the biggest frauds during lockdowns were companies taking out the Bounce Back Loans/grants and then mysteriously closing down. Those loans were underwritten by the government and will have cost us £millions
Tryagainplease · 09/12/2021 08:33

Yeah, so basically everyone working from gone again will force canteens to shut, office cleaners won’t be able to work, businesses that reply on passing trade won’t need as many staff but there is NO furlough?? So what do those people do? Just lose their jobs?

Cascascascas · 09/12/2021 08:40

@PAFMO

Plenty of money as the BOE printed all the last and lent to government at low rates and ex rate didn’t change.

So really the last time cost zero in terms of borrowing money as se have it to our selves.

jgw1 · 09/12/2021 08:45

@Waxonwaxoff0

It won't but it's going to be bad for sectors like hospitality and travel. Even these small new restrictions will be devastating for them, so many people are cancelling holidays and meals out. I'll be supporting hospitality as much as I can this month.
No, no, it'll be fine. The Health Secretary was on the radio this morning explaining that whilst we should all work from home if at all possible, to stop the spread it is absolutely fine for us to go out partying, because it has been discovered that virus don't go to parties.
WouldBeGood · 09/12/2021 08:46

Quite @Tryagainplease. Plus all the pubs, cafes, restaurants, dry cleaners, etc that surround the areas where there are offices. No regular trade, no boozy Christmas office get togethers or lunches. People are just discarded.

DaisyNGO · 09/12/2021 09:09

Alistair "It’s just now shops/hospitality venues are reopened it impacts no people."

confused by this.

Fizbosshoes · 09/12/2021 09:13

@WouldBeGood

I work in Central London and rarely able to wfh. Just in a 5-10 minute walk from my workplace the amount of restaurants, cafes, takeaways that have closed down in the last 18 months is immense. Its quite depressing walking and looking at all the empty units. Not just hospitality. A friend is a hairdresser and she says they aren't even that busy coming up to Xmas (presumably because people are getting their hair done closer to home) and probably gyms will close too. A lot of people want to dress it up as "only rich landLords are missing out" but actually the knock on effects are so far reaching (often for many people on NMW and low wages)

Katyppp · 09/12/2021 09:15

@EnoughExclamations

Your post is the most ignorant I have read on here for a long while.

There is a worldwide shortage of chips, I assume you keep up with the news?

It's unfortunate for your husband and I can see why you are upset at losing 20% of your income, presumably temporarily.

But realistically do you expect the employer to pay the workforce for doing nothing?
That's what your childish rant seems to imply.
You do realise the owner of the business has not arranged the global shortage and the turnover will reduce by 20%, don't you?

Their fucking main wanker of an owner hasn't gone without.
Neither has his wife who also is a part owner

And you know this for a fact, do you?
I have been the fucking main wanker of an owner, and let me tell you, I earned considerably less than my staff to keep te business going.
The fucking main wanker of an owner will have a lot more to lose than 20% of his wages.
We nearly lost our home when our business collapsed.

Yet I am sure some of our staff would think we were greedy shits, the ones that are as ignorant as you are.

The other owner hid, wouldn't speak to the workers at all.

I hope his fucking house burns down, the selfish bastard

What an utterly disgusting thing to say. How ill-educated and ridiculous you sound.

WouldBeGood · 09/12/2021 09:18

It’s really sad @Fizbosshoes. I was in London in October and even the little Sainsbury’s and Boots in the City were closed.

The ripple effect of these WFH edicts are far reaching.

icedcoffees · 09/12/2021 09:34

@rwalker

Don't understand the question they are saying work from home if you can. So if you can't don't . There not shutting business so why would they offer furlough .
Because if offices close, the office workers may be able to WFH, but what about the cleaners, receptionists, building security, canteen workers...

They can't do their jobs from home so can't carry on working but if there's no furlough, how do they pay their bills?

The WFH mandate affects so many industries.

It also affects people like me - I'm a dog walker. I obviously can't WFH but if people stop going to the office they stop needing a dog walker as they're home all day anyway.

fournonblondes · 09/12/2021 09:36

No it won’t. You can go to work there is not lockdown. If you can wfh is ok but not compulsory.

Happy1982ish · 09/12/2021 09:38

@EnoughExclamations

Doesn't matter if it does not return.

It won't stop employers treating their workers like shit.

Got used to the workers doing as they were told, and tolerating being treated as if they don't need money to live, haven't they?

DH's company got all the workers to agree to a four day week, the last couple of months, because of the chip shortage. With a twenty percent pay cut, I might add, salaried and on the clock.

Their fucking main wanker of an owner hasn't gone without.
Neither has his wife who also is a part owner.
The other owner hid, wouldn't speak to the workers at all.

Everyone on twenty percent less pay to protect these greedy shits.

Twenty percent. Sound familiar?

Three chaps wouldn't play ball and it sowed the seeds of rebellion in the rest of them.

He made them redundant in revenge and to keep the rest of them compliant.

Some of the workers couldn't afford their bills and food for their kids.
Did he care? Did he fuck!

"Look, I know it's difficult, being on less money....but...but...but"

I hope his fucking house burns down, the selfish bastard.

Surely the owner has gone without

His business is operating at 80%

Unphased · 09/12/2021 09:44

It’s their company set up and ran for themselves, if the workers don’t like the situation, they have the option to leave or better still set up their own company and try to run one, no good moaning about it, do something about it.

The poster says the owner hasn’t lost out But if he’s cut his workforce’s operating hours by 20% This his business has been cut by 20%
allbartwo · 09/12/2021 09:53

I can't work from home really. I work at large events, exhibitions, that sort of thing.

No doubt some of these will err on the side of caution and postpone or cancel for the early part of next year. Then there is the knock on effects, a big exhibition at the NEC will involve plenty of site staff, security, catering etc. etc. Then local hotels, hospitality, and services. It affects a lot of people!

But hey, let's just have it on zoom and live forever...

Katyppp · 09/12/2021 09:55

@Happy1982ish and @Unphased
As I said, it's a long time since I have read such an ill-educated and spiteful post.

Happy1982ish · 09/12/2021 09:59

@Katyppp

Did you mean to direct that to me?

Happy1982ish · 09/12/2021 09:59

Ah sorry yes
I didn’t realise you’d commented on @EnoughExclamations too

Fairylights25 · 09/12/2021 10:14

No chance of furlough.
Zero chance of schools closing.
We will carry on in some twilight lockdown with half baked measures and limp on until spring and things improve.

Yellow85 · 09/12/2021 10:20

I’d be surprised in even half those wfh last time go back to it. Because there’s absolutely no recourse for not doing it, people aren’t as afraid as they were in 2020 and we’re all wiser to the impact on businesses such as those mentioned here.

WouldBeGood · 09/12/2021 10:43

It’s a miserable existence

IfNot · 09/12/2021 10:57

Interestingly it is currently impossible to get insured against unemployment or redundancy. So if you lose your job as a knock on effect of endless WFH , and you don’t get a pay off or already have insurance, you are going to be totally reliant on universal credit (after 5 weeks is it?)
The vast majority of people who are losing their income are people who already live on the poverty line. It’s utterly disgraceful how little most people seem to care, and most people I know who have been WFH throughout have no real intention of ever going back in- they like sitting in their comfy clothes and being able to walk their dog/ pick up their kids. We have become even more of a two tier society.

Unphased · 09/12/2021 11:24

Katyppp
Please enlighten me, in what way, people set up and run business to make money for themselves not to give people employment, unless your a public service

Whammyyammy · 09/12/2021 11:26

Not a cats chance in hell, no money. Its wfh if you can, if not get to work guidelines.
