"I should have freedom in what to put into my body"

Hi All

I just wanted to share my thoughts regarding the "I want to have a choice what goes into my body" thing.
I think lots of people (who refuse the vaccine) have lost touch with reality. Yes, everyone should have the freedom to choose to get a vaccine or not - in a perfect world. No doubt about that. However - global pandemic is not the time to be selfish. I was born in a country where there is a compulsory military service, where nearly every male had to go to war for his country regardless of his own political view. My grandfather was called to the frontline at the age of 17, and he went there, as many other boys and men did. Because that was something they had to do for their country, there was no negotiation! And right now we are in war too - but with the virus, so we need to get vaccinated because there is no other way of getting out of this war. People can have very valid individual reasons why they don't want to do it, but unfortunately sometimes we have to do things we don't want for the greater good. I really want to see this "I want to choose what goes into my body" brigade being called into compulsory military service, what would they do then? I am not trying to be rude or shame anyone, but why is it considered OK to prioritise the inviduals' reasons over mass populations'? When people end up in hospitals and doctors inject drugs into their body to keep them alive - I don't see anyone protesting against it, how is the current situation different?
When will these people stop being stroppy children and just get a sodding vaccine so we can all live our lives again?

@Acidburn I'm not sure your comparisons there with national service etc are the most helpful, but I broadly agree with your sentiment. Only through comprehensive vaccination- on a global scale - will we get a handle on this virus.

Reminds me of the nazi regime.

Did you know a man in Germany killed his ENTIRE family because he faked a covid passport and was scared he'd be found out?
Look at what it's doing to people!

There was also a lady so scared by vaccine mandates, she she set herself on fire.

I'm doubly vaccinated by choice, a believer in vaccination, but really clear that nobody should be coerced into having inoculations they do not want. This is more important to me than increasing the number of vaccinated individuals, or even 'getting back to normal'. I've turned this over in my mind so much, but always come back to this point. I defend the right to bodily autonomy. There are ways of reducing the chance of spreading and contracting the virus without vaccinating oneself.

The unvaccinated do pose a risk to others. Everyone waiting for a hospital bed for a routine op who gets it cancelled because an unvaccinated person is taking up an ICU bed. The hospitals wouldn’t be full of covid patients if everyone was vaccinated so I actually fully blame the unvaxxed right now.

WarmthAndDepth · 08/12/2021 20:13

I also come from a country with compulsory national service for young men, (and subsequent month-long call ups for all men every few years) and prison sentences for conscientious objectors. This barbaric practice has since been ended, thankfully.

MichelleScarn · 08/12/2021 20:13

Well l for one am so pleased that the OP has started such a unique thread. If only someone else had previously come up with a holier than thou, pretentious opinion

Double jabbed here, I'm more scared by the individual vindictive gleefulness from some at the thought of getting to withhold medical care from those who they don't agree with's actions.

Oh do fuck off.

There is PLENTY of vaccinated people taking up those ICU beds.

EinsteinaGogo · 08/12/2021 20:17
**@ShaneTheThird ok, fair enough. Are you happy to sign the document stating that if you end up needing ICU bed - you are happy to give it up for someone else? No one will offer you to sign it, of course, but hypothetically- would you?
@Acidburn - can you elaborate?

@ShaneTheThird said that he/she cannot have the vaccine as it causes problems with their existing illness.

I'm genuinely interested - why does that make them less deserving of medical help if needed?

GoldenOmber · 08/12/2021 20:19

They don’t have to protest against it because they can just say ‘no’ if they don’t want any given treatment. As it should be.

I respect bodily autonomy. I might not agree with reasoning over certain issues but I respect it nonetheless

Check the ONS data.

Do you believe everything Boris says too?

@EinsteinaGogo because unvaccinated people flud the ICU beds, and all the other surgeries / operations are being postponed.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 08/12/2021 20:27

I actually think the comparison with WWI is quite apt. The rationale hasn’t exactly aged well has it. Same old upper class people expecting the plebs to do what they’re not willing to! You’d have to be a particularly cold fish not to empathise with the conscientious objectors. They were right weren’t they.

scottishtablet23 · 08/12/2021 20:27

We're taught in this country that those who went to war fought so that we can live free. What did your countrymen sacrifice their lives for? To keep the same oppressive dictatorship in power?

This being on Mumsnet site I hope the OP hadn't got kids, and if she hasn't I think she should be sterilised as she agrees with medical procedures against Thier will.

@WarmthAndDepth I suspect we're from the same country.
I have much older brothers who came of age in the late 70s/early 80s.
The impact was dreadful.
