@Amalfa

I think a lot of people are trying to preserve family Xmas by sacrificing nights out so they don’t have to isolate.
And that's understandable. Though many people like me have very small or no families to spend Christmas with or live alone and it feels very sad to have the pre-Christmas socialising with friends and colleagues scuppered when Christmas itself is nothing to get too excited about other. It makes the entire bloody thing lonely, not just the few days around Christmas. Which is not to say everyone shouldn't do what works best for them of course. And I loved my single/small family life before Covid! It just feels very thin gruel to be supping on at the moment.
VikingOnTheFridge · 03/12/2021 17:02
@Etinoxaurus but you're not paying for colleagues meeting up with their own money on their own time are you?
Our bosses have sent an email out telling people they should meet up until at least 2022, christmas meal or no christmas meal!
Exactly.

If employers want to decide who you can and can't see when you aren't working, they can pay you for that time. Otherwise fuck off.

LizzieSiddal · 03/12/2021 17:20

We run a business and have cancelled our Xmas party/meal. We just want everyone to have a healthy Xmas, and all meeting up in London a week before, just raises the risks. We have not told anyone what to do in their spare time however- that’s just very wrong. And we’re sending a lovely hamper to everyone instead of the meal. 🍾

MiddayMass · 03/12/2021 17:20

@Alltheblue Holiday Inn and Pizza Express workers would also like to be able to pay their rent and feed their kids.

MiddayMass · 03/12/2021 17:22

It’s not just students that work in the hospitality sector. There are many adults with bills to pay that do it full-time

MiddayMass · 03/12/2021 17:25

I have a relative who’s full-time in a restaurant and is absolutely terrified of it closing as he won’t get furlough. He’s a single dad to 2 kids

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/12/2021 17:30

People/Businesses making up their own covid rules drive me nuts.

I am pleased to say that ours is going ahead next week - 40ish staff attending. I thought we might get some drop outs but everyone seems determined to come along.

WTAFhappened123 · 03/12/2021 17:34

Don’t give two flips what Boris says our Christmas family plans are going ahead

We're doing our bit for the economy by going out!
Joesmummy1 · 03/12/2021 17:49

It’s pathetic isn’t it. Time to live. Average age of death via covid is 82!!
Love to Barry x

restingbitchface30 · 03/12/2021 17:53

Mines 2 weeks tomorrrow and I feel like it’s going to get cancelled, so I get your frustration. Was looking forward to getting drunk and causing some mayhem!

Fluffmum · 03/12/2021 17:59

I wish mine was!!

Lolacat1234 · 03/12/2021 18:04

Ours cancelled too. I was actually ok with it and a bit relieved. I have a very gung-ho approach to Covid these days but the do was less than 10 days before Xmas so if someone brought it to the table so to speak and passed it on then that's someone's Xmas ruined. It's not the actual Covid it's the self isolation people are worried about x

Dagnabit · 03/12/2021 18:13

That’s awful OP, such a shame but I do you you and Barry manage to have a nice Christmas anyway

This made me laugh for ages! But sorry OP, that sucks.

Mandyjack · 03/12/2021 18:13

Meet up privately, your company can't stop you socialising with colleagues/friends. Or arrange a night at yours, get in takeaway or buy nibbles and wine etc

Dagnabit · 03/12/2021 18:15

Bold fail…whoops!

QueenLagertha · 03/12/2021 18:20

😂
Sorry op that really sucks

cherish123 · 03/12/2021 18:34

It's annoying 😒.

Could you have an informal get together? Work can't dictate what you do in your own time.

notoldjustpastyoung · 03/12/2021 18:40

For a long time, nobody knows because the virus is in charge. It's like being invaded by an enemy army. Have to find a different way of having fun. You're not the only one are you. Everyone is in this, so stop complaining about something that cannot be changed.

Mantlemoose · 03/12/2021 18:43

I'm not going to mine (23rd Dec) as I didn't want to take the chance of not seeing my old mum on Christmas day. If it had been this weekend or next I would have went. I'm meeting workmates between Christmas and New year tho - don't care what happens then as don't celebrate NY.

Fudgemonkeys · 03/12/2021 18:58

It's not illegal to meet with other work colleagues in a pub or indeed still celebrate Christmas. Your bosses can't sack you either for meeting up. I do get how you feel though.

TheRemotePart · 03/12/2021 19:09

@november90

christmas meal not christmas smell 😂 and i'm talking about our work christmas meal! so upset :(
I wouldn’t be surprised if Christmas “smells” were cancelled at this point Wink Love a festive candle. It was my only joy last year…
JohnDee007 · 03/12/2021 19:18

I’m hoping and praying ours is cancelled it’s on 17 Dec in a city centre in a (prob unventilated) private dining room reached by going through a packed bar. Seeing v vulnerable relatives over Christmas and going away with a child suffering from anxiety who is really looking forward to Christmas. But we’re basically being forced to go! Oh and the food choice is crap. I’m stuck with a salad starter followed by a salad main and sorbet (of unspecified flavour) as it’s the only vegan choice!

Surely if you want to go out you can just arrange a night out with friends!

Tigger1895 · 03/12/2021 19:18

@madisonbridges

Why have work cancelled it? I thought the only new rules were masks in certain indoor spaces, but not bars or restaurants? I'm sorry, its rubbish. Sometimes it feels like it's going to be dragged out for ever!
Supermarkets and large stores are cancelling them so as not to have staff out sick during their busiest time.
LovelyIssues · 03/12/2021 19:24

Who is cancelling and why?! Have I missed something? We are not in another lockdown.... ours and everyone else's I know is going ahead as normal?
