Alltheblue. Sorry posted too soon. I think the panic has been created deliberately, so althugh there is no lockdown, people are voluntarily 'locking themselves down'.

MarshaBradyo · 02/12/2021 14:57

Such a shame for you op Sad

I’m really worried about stuff coming up

Nidan2Sandan · 02/12/2021 14:57

I have a meal out on Saturday, only 5 of us though so should imagine it'll be fine.

Was meant to be having a big work event on next week (not a xmas party, but a replay of the event cancelled in March 2020) and just found out thay has been postponed again to February. I'm disappointed but also relieved as didnt want to be pissing around with trains in december.

CliveAntichrist · 02/12/2021 15:05

I work in a school and our party this Friday in the school hall has also been cancelled.

theleafandnotthetree · 02/12/2021 15:12

@SummerHouse

It's difficult. Could you book and plan for something in the summer? I know that's a long way off but makes much more sense to me for an office party. Hog roast, fairy lights, hay bales, sangria that sort of thing.
The summer? As in 6 months away? Jesus Christ, if the poor girl has to wait til then for a night out we might as well all give up.
SummerHouse · 02/12/2021 15:14

I know. I really sympathise and I racked my brain to come up with something positive. That was the best I had. Confused

Whatevernext1 · 02/12/2021 15:24

We've also just had our Christmas meal for this Saturday cancelled. It's frustrating,I was ok with them not allowing a store wide event and each individual department having a meal out for those who wanted to. Head office emailed the stores this morning to say any meals/nights out must be cancelled. We don't get this paid for by the company which is fine but now have all lost money. Why is it ok for us to all work closely together surrounded by the public leaning and breathing all over us and eat our lunch in the canteen together but we can't eat dinner in a restaurant together! It's madness!

muddyford · 02/12/2021 15:25

I find it odd that works parties are being cancelled when most of those attending work together 35 hours a week.

Sorry, I was probably a bit sharp, but we really are living off crumbs these days aren't we?

Maybe Barry was the cause of the smell- two birds with one stone 😜

Watapalava · 02/12/2021 16:15

Who is it making these cancellations?! I’m most places I work the staff organise it not the bosses so they’d have no say anyway?!

Did no one go out prior to Nuly when isolations were in place? Doyou all not have friends who’d agree not to name you to T&T? God everyone I know is in agreement never to name a contact officially and just to let them know privately

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/12/2021 16:24

Over the years I’ve been to a wide range of Christmas meals, parties and assorted soirées. Most of them were fine. A few were amazing and some were awful. But even the awful ones usually had something memorable about them.

We are living through such sad, joyless times…

2020nymph · 02/12/2021 16:56

We've had a meeting today about our work Christmas meal next week. One third have cancelled 3 more are a maybe and the rest are going ahead.

Beafaith · 02/12/2021 16:56

Our Xmas party has been cancelled today due to D and V outbreak at once of our work places and high covid cases in our area.

A LOT of companies are doing hybrid working. We have to go in 2 days a week and (depending on the day) there may only be 10 people in the spacious office. There could be 150 people at the Christmas party, in a conference room

Exactly! The amount of people saying on threads like these 'oh you're not missing much' or 'I was thrilled my childs nativity was cancelled' are kind of missing the point. A lot of what people are missing out on is the stuff of life, it's not all amazing or exciting or essentual to but it's what engages and connects us, gives us things to think about, gossip about, mull over, reminisce about. Even if it's crap, it's an experience, something to maybe laugh about in time.
PollyIndia · 02/12/2021 17:24

I’m so sorry for you OP. A fellow lone parent here and last year was bleak. I’ve got my own business and have planned cocktails and karaoke for tomorrow evening and had already asked everyone to test tomorrow before they come. I’ve been worrying a bit today (just as I don’t want to be responsible for a super spreader event!) but I’m sticking with it. Nobody has pulled out - but it’s not compulsory anyway so it is totally up to people whether or not they come. There will be about 50 of us. And the place is ventilated.
I dunno, we can only take the precautions that are available to us, then we just have to make a personal risk assessment and live our lives.
That sucks though. If you were in London, I’d say come to my party for some margaritas!

Pascal80 · 02/12/2021 17:35

My work Christmas party is always a big deal - held in castle with a big meal, music, dancing and black tie - 300 people. Just been told it has been cancelled (not postponed). It was due to be held on 15th December.

NothingIsWrong · 02/12/2021 20:44

Given that I've paid for mine in full already, I'm going to be eating that meal whether work wants me to cancel it or not. Unless they are offering to refund me the money

november90 · 02/12/2021 20:48

thanks for the replies and understanding everyone. just venting and seeing people agree made me feel a lot better!
i think what's annoyed me the most is that we all work and sit together. yes we do wfh occasionally but everyone is in the office at least once a week. so where is the logic?!
also how dare the dictate who we meet up with outside of work! there's no restrictions on this, so why do they get away with saying that. i know that they are thinking about their business first, but we are also people with lives outside of work! a few people were arranging to meet up anyway and apparently their team leader had words and others feel too worried how it'll impact them professionally. what a joke.

so i guess it'll be another night in for me :(
literally looked forward to this for months :(

Utterly bonkers -new variant mild or asymptomatic.

herecomesthsun · 02/12/2021 21:07

From a Newsletter sent out this evening by the Telegraph

"No. 10 has stressed that it does not want Christmas parties to be cancelled, despite Government departments opting to do so.

....At least 50 Norwegians have tested positive for the omicron variant of Covid-19 after attending a Christmas buffet, or Julbord, in Oslo".

MsAgnesDiPesto · 02/12/2021 21:12

@MrsJackWhicher

Utterly bonkers -new variant mild or asymptomatic.
Based on one GP’s anecdotal evidence of seeing about 24 patients, all in their 20s and 30s.

We don’t know yet how serious it is. But if it is, as it appears, more transmissible, then it’s wise to be cautious.

Katie517 · 02/12/2021 21:15

Why are people’s work places dictating what you can do outside of work time? My colleagues are also some of my closest friends and we would never not socialize just because work said not to and nor would my work try to dictate what we do! Ours is going ahead and we had a big team fun day/ lunch in the office yesterday.
