@Katie517

Why are people’s work places dictating what you can do outside of work time? My colleagues are also some of my closest friends and we would never not socialize just because work said not to and nor would my work try to dictate what we do! Ours is going ahead and we had a big team fun day/ lunch in the office yesterday.
I’m/the workplace are dictating because we’re paying and don’t want everyone ill.
november90 · 02/12/2021 21:31

@Etinoxaurus but you're not paying for colleagues meeting up with their own money on their own time are you?
Our bosses have sent an email out telling people they should meet up until at least 2022, christmas meal or no christmas meal!

OP that is awful. They absolutely cannot and should not be saying anything of the sort.

Blimey, no. They have no right to do that.

Hereticetta · 02/12/2021 21:44

My workplace didn’t even organise a Christmas do because of nervousness about covid, so a big group of staff have organised our own one m, outdoors at a pub with heaters. Fingers crossed it doesn’t piss down!

Vivana · 02/12/2021 21:52

I work in social care and were all having ours. Bloody need it with what we have been through the last 18 months

DunderMifflinSalesRep · 02/12/2021 21:52

DH has just cancelled his company's Xmas do. Not because he was worried about the business. But because it was within ten days of Christmas Day and with the new rules he didn't want to put his staff in the potential position of having to isolate over Christmas and not see family. They can all work from home so it would be rare for them to all be together. It's a shame and he's gutted, but he just felt it would be a big risk.

Amalfa · 02/12/2021 23:41

I think a lot of people are trying to preserve family Xmas by sacrificing nights out so they don’t have to isolate.

Exactly

Our's is next Wednesday and currently it's still on. It's a sit down late lunch for 30 odd, in a private room and everyone has been asked to do a LFT that morning. Hoping it'll be ok as I've got a new frock for it.

MiddayMass · 03/12/2021 07:25

The restaurant DD works at is in chaos over this. We’re in a shitty small town with not that many restaurants and it’s the most popular one for Christmas parties. For party bookings they take preorders and get the ingredients in in advance. She says half have cancelled this weekend and they have loads of excess food now. They are going to donate it the homeless soup kitchen but will make no profit.

lololololollll · 03/12/2021 07:28

They can't stop you doing something. I'm having all my staff to my house. Granted it's only 8 but you could do something like that

MiddayMass · 03/12/2021 07:29

Also the ones that have been turning up for office parties at my DD’s restaurant have half of the attendants missing. The restaurant has been good and hasn’t charged the companies for these people despite ordering the ingredients for their meals in advance.

The restaurant already nearly went bust a couple of years ago and was just getting back on it’s feet in the last couple of months but I think this will kill it off tbh.

allofthecheese · 03/12/2021 07:36

Have been hoping ours is gonna be cancelled but looks like it's going ahead today.... Blush

AlecTrevelyan006 · 03/12/2021 10:01

The hospitality sector is being crushed for no good reason.

herecomesthsun · 03/12/2021 10:08

I think the Government - or at least Boris - are being very careful to emphasise that people are free to go to Christmas parties, if they choose.

They are free also to cancel bookings.

And there's no furlough now.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 03/12/2021 12:24

And hey presto! My works Xmas meal in cancelled.

Ffs

Peregrina · 03/12/2021 12:47

The hospitality sector is being crushed for no good reason.

Well since a lot of hospitality was dependent on EU staff who went home perhaps it's all part of the cunning plan to hide this effect.

Alltheblue · 03/12/2021 12:58

The hospitality sector is being crushed for no good reason.

I'd rather have the option for cancer treatment and mental health services than ongoing access to Holiday Inn and Pizza Express.

julieca · 03/12/2021 13:05

DP is going to his tonight. He has checked people he actually likes are still going.
Mine is nearer Xmas and will I suspect be cancelled.

herecomesthsun · 03/12/2021 13:08

A lot of chain restaurants and gastro pubs were in trouble before covid, wasn't there a pub a week closing?

It's really sad, (I love sitting in a cafe with a coffee and a book) and awful for the proprietors.

I am hoping that the vaccines (and new medical treatments) will get us through the next bit (with at least some of us being very careful) and that we will have a much better summer.

Horst · 03/12/2021 13:55

Ours is still on so far but it’s not till the 18th so could all change.

Shimmylikejoanholloway · 03/12/2021 13:56

Ours have both been cancelled today.

CarlaH · 03/12/2021 15:58

Perhaps restaurants will have a much better January and February as a result of all these cancellations. People will be happier to go to a party or meal once the threat of not being well or having to isolate for Christmas itself has gone away.

I think January and February are usually quiet because people have spent all their money on Christmas and New Year dos but not so many this year.

Almostmenopausal · 03/12/2021 16:21

Many of us don't have employers! Your title is misleading, you will still get a Christmas meal!!!
