Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

I thought it was common knowledge that it wasn’t going away. “Living with it” involves taking precautions sometimes.

Masks will keep your face extra warm in this horrible weather, they’ll stop us coughing splutters into the air in public so you’ll less likely get a cold, at least we’re doing a thing to keep it in check.. it’s not that bad.

I honestly can’t feel victim-y about masks after seeing more news of desperate families freezing and drowning.

Furries · 28/11/2021 02:58

@ChilliGoat

I see messages repeatedly saying we can’t do this for every variant… but we’re not!

There have been loads of variants this year that have been variants of interest.

And just a few that are variants of concern

Namely, for us, Alpha, Beta, Delta and now Omicron.

Alpha was the “Kent” variant which was mostly much more transmissible.

Beta was identified in South Africa and evaded vaccines somewhat worryingly but was not more transmissible.

Delta evaded vaccine a little bit much less than Beta. It was very transmissible. More transmissible than Alpha. The fact that Alpha and Delta were so transmissible stopped the vaccine evading Beta taking a hold here.

And now we have omicron. It is still being investigated but initial analysis shows it is way more transmissible than Delta and evades vaccines like Beta too.

This means it is transmissible enough to outpace Delta and make a vaccine evasive variant dominant.

I mean I hope they’re wrong, but I understand why they’re worried.

They haven’t done this for most variants, they didn’t even do it for delta. They lifted restrictions for delta!

Yay, another sane person! Great post.

@AledsiPad

Zotter

I don’t care. I really don’t anymore.

We are not more important than nature. People are going to die - we will all die eventually. Why are we so special that we think we can evade nature?

I’d rather die than live like this forever.

👏👏

I'm fine with mask wearing. I wouldn't go along with any tougher "stay home and don't see your family" restrictions though.

Touchmybum · 28/11/2021 03:28

So many posts on this thread utterly depress me and demonstrate how hard it will be for us to get out of this shitshow! If this generation had been alive in WW2, we would all be speaking German.

None of us want Covid, or all its repercussions! However, it's here, and all its mutations. How hard is it to take sensible precautions, like wearing a mask, to try to prevent it taking a hold in the UK???

SmellyOldOwls · 28/11/2021 03:37

'FFS get over yourself....you are being asked to wear a mask in shops and on the bus....’ not a life worth living?’ ....drama queen or what🙄'

I know! And all this hand wringing about social distancing. So you can't stand on top of people when you're shopping, you shouldn't be doing that anyway because it's fucking annoying. Just put your mask on and wait your turn in the cheese aisle Sandra.

TicTacHoh · 28/11/2021 03:39

Yanbu. I don't think people will comply in the same way this time round.

gofg · 28/11/2021 05:42

FFS get over yourself....you are being asked to wear a mask in shops and on the bus....’ not a life worth living?’ ....drama queen or what

There are a lot of drama queens on MN it seems. Honestly, if wearing a mask and a bit of social distancing cause such stress I wonder how the hell these people ever cope with life!

WeAreTheHeroes · 28/11/2021 05:54

I'm glad mask wearing is going to be compulsory again. It's a simple, sensible precaution.

Cici22 · 28/11/2021 06:01

Sorry, but you just need to kind of get over yourself and get on with it. Pretty sure everyone is fed up, but do you really want to risk all the drama again, just because you are fed up. So You can live your privileged life as once before. We all would love to, but we can't.
There have been loads of variants. If you actually read the news, you would of understood this one of a deeper concern. Hence the reactions from all over the world.
So suck it up, yeah it's shit, no one wants to do it. But this is our life now, and our new normal. Least we're not having to live in a war torn country, and that be our new normal. There's always worse out there...

Cosmoz · 28/11/2021 06:02

I’m done with it all and won’t be complying with the wearing of masks. I have wore them previously despite technically being exempt but I cannot tolerate them anymore. Call me selfish and irresponsible if you like but for almost two years now I’ve done things to safeguard other people and now I’m choosing to do what I want instead of what I’m told. So shoot me.

Also you could do it to protect yourself. And yeah, you are really selfish. People who don't wear mask when and spread it are the worst. You watch people you care about almost die. Because someone didn't wear a mask. See how you like it.

Completely agree
twosticksandanapple · 28/11/2021 06:08

I think it is good the government is taking a precautionary approach for once. Hopefully in a few weeks they will find out the new variant is milder than delta and masks will be ditched. However if not we will be glad to have delayed its spread for as long as possible to reduce deaths before a new vaccine is available.

Cosmoz · 28/11/2021 06:10

I don’t mind being called selfish. At least I’m being honest about how I feel about this shit show and choosing to do what I feel is best as opposed to listening to our incompetent prime minister.

Tubsen · 28/11/2021 06:12

I imagine it is just in shops and public transport so that Boris and the cabinet members don't have to wear them as I doubt any of them go down the local Tesco or take public transport, they would probably have their shopping delivered. They can then carry on as normal without wearing a mask in places like the Commons and restaurants.

Cosmoz · 28/11/2021 06:13

Oh and fwiw did you not read the bit where is said that I’m technically exempt from male wearing? So I assume you think everyone else who are exempt are also selfish?

Cosmoz · 28/11/2021 06:13

mask wearing

Tubsen · 28/11/2021 06:17

I wonder how many will wear the mask in the Commons when they have the vote on all this on Monday.

colourfulpuddles · 28/11/2021 06:33

Just don’t comply. I’m not going to. They can’t force you.

Roselilly36 · 28/11/2021 06:37

@Ireallydontcare55

It’s not just masks, it’s new travel restrictions too. It’s not a hardship no, but normal life for me does not involve wearing a mask.
I totally agree, it’s not normal life at all.
WeAreTheHeroes · 28/11/2021 06:38

It'll be the law so they could enforce it. Why is it such a big deal to you that you won't comply? You don't get to pick and choose which bits of the law you will and won't comply with. I can only presume you are happy to accept the consequences. Or will lie in order to evade them.

Honeymint · 28/11/2021 06:48

Apparently the average pandemic lasts four years, where they get ‘average’ from there I’m not sure but it sounds about right.

To be honest I think this is more a case of the pandemic being handled absolutely appallingly by the government. It’s all these last minute U-turns and broken ‘promises’ that are exhausting.

The mask thing actually makes me feel a lot safer. I think a government ad on tv explaining how masks help would have gone a long way throughout this whole ordeal.

It’s exhausting and depressing but it won’t last forever.

You are not listening to the PM. He is relaying the advice he has been given.

*Blame the anti vaxxers.

Two members of DH's anti vax family now have covid *

Anit-vax DIL hasn't had Covid, but she did have "a very bad cold", that gave her a temp of over 39, a hacking cough and sent her to her bed for a week. DGD had to go and stay with her dad, as DIL was too ill to look after her.

But it wasn't Covid, oh no. Hmm
