Some restrictions back, fed up

Just heard the news about masks returning as of next week and changes to travelling rules.

It’s not so much that wearing a mask is inconvenient, it’s the fact that we were told restrictions were over and that we could get on with our lives.

I know I will get shot down for this post, but if it isn’t the ‘omnicron’ variant then it’ll be something else.

I’m sure many people will be in favour of tighter restrictions ‘until numbers drop’. And then what? In a few months’ time when the latest variant is out, will we have to do the same again?
“it’s just for a few weeks/months”

This isn’t going away. What’s the point of having 3 vaccines?

I’m fed up with it all, are people really prepared to do this for the foreseeable future ?

@Elphame

I won't be wearing one. For the first time I shall be taking advantage of my legal exemption.

Never stopped wearing them in Scotland.....more's the pity. They make f all difference.

I’ve also got a terrified family member who lost their job in 2020 and has been job searching since. We’re in a dead area with no jobs. 2 weeks ago they finally got something full-time in a pub and if businesses are forced to shut they don’t know if they’ve been there long enough to get furlough.

Northsoutheastwest76 · 27/11/2021 22:46

Please just quit with this hysterical mask wearing nonsense.
I wear a mask and try to leave gaps in queues as it is no hardship for me.
DH is ECV and I am CV but we are living our lives. We have a full calendar of holidays, weekend breaks etc etc to look forward to.

friendlycat · 27/11/2021 22:47

Everyone is fed up of it. People all over the World are fed up of it. Other countries have put their own measures in place before us.

It’s naive to think that restrictions wouldn’t come back. Unfortunately we are in the middle of it all until the pandemic has run its course. Pandemics do end but it takes several years. Realistically if we had been told right at the beginning that we would have to live a different way of life for the duration with different ebbs and flows there would have been pandemonium with mass scale job losses and economic melt down.

People like Chris Whitty were always the ones to listen to with their measured words and warnings. Not Boris and his ridiculous blustering.

In time this will pass as indeed others have. But the world just has to Wade through the peaks and troughs until the pandemic burns itself out and becomes a more manageable situation.

It’s a very trying situation for the whole World.

I do not want my children to grow thinking wearing a piece of cloth over you face is normal either. What a fucked up world.

Pootle40 · 27/11/2021 22:48

@PurplePeaks

OP - I am old enough to remember when seatbelts were made compulsory. Wearing a seatbelt? OUTRAGEOUS curtailment of liberty. And when drink driving laws tightened. Again with the uproar.... When smoking was banned in pubs....

How do you feel about these things now? Would you like people to have the freedom to drink what they like and drive? Not wear seatbelts or put their kids in car seats ( massive inconvenience and expense too!!) I will wear a mask in public until I don't have to. Of course I will. Because I'm a reasonable and thinking adult

Did wearing a seatbelt effectively prevent you communicating normally with other human beings? No, I didn't think so.
Northsoutheastwest76 · 27/11/2021 22:49

I personally cannot see another lockdown happening.

whoopsnomore · 27/11/2021 22:49

@AlecTrevelyan006

If omicron is as transmissible as the doom mongers suggest then wearing a face covering ain’t gonna stop it.

Governments, and the rest of us, have got to get used to the fact that you cannot ‘control’ a virus.

No but you can take measures to mitigate and slow and reduce transmission. I'm so tired of making the same simple point repeatedly. We know we can't "stop" a virus, but we can also take basic precautions against spreading it.
Spongecake23 · 27/11/2021 22:49

I just think it’s time we realised we cannot control a virus…it’s impossible. The sooner that happens, the better. Mother Nature will always win.

Yeah they should grow up blissfully ignorant of the basics of infection control. Let them sneeze, cough and mouth-breathe where they will, that will show the rest of us!
shiningjustforyou · 27/11/2021 22:52

@Ireallydontcare55

Oh gosh I’m so so sorry. Yeah, I’m just gonna grow up now, stop being so thick, immature, uneducated, naive and deluded. I’m just a selfish individual who couldn’t care less and who has no knowledge. I really need to get a grip and get over myself, and maybe read some books! If only I could be even an ounce of what you were
Honestly, you are coming across as a child throwing a tantrum. You are whining about being told 'freedom day' was it and restrictions wouldn't return. Well more fool you for believing that when so many experts were warning of spikes and winter restrictions.

If masks and other easy measures helps to keep numbers down whilst they work out what's going on with the new variant then it's a tiny price to pay.

Maybe stop throwing your toys out of the pram and get some perspective.

Look at where we were a year ago! At least now we have a vaccine and better treatment for Covid.

Exactly this - my almost 5 year old can’t wait to have her own heart and it breaks me.

I don’t mind wearing a mask, but I hate what it symbolises. And the compulsory reintroduction in shops is such a huge step backwards when i was feeling quite optimistic.

HesterShaw1 · 27/11/2021 22:53

Jesus this thread.

Russianmax · 27/11/2021 22:54

I don't care about these little restrictions - because no one will enforce them. I'll wear a mask if I think fit. If not, I won't.

Keep going back to the 'don't sit down whilst out on a walk' rule during Lockdown and the 'no more than 6' that everyone got their knickers in a twist about. I'll not get sucked into that again.

What worries me more is where they'll go to next. And they will. Because they can. Because this variant, that hasn't killed anyone and most probably is less severe than the rest, is a perfect reason excuse.

As a loving responsible parent you could use it as an opportunity to teach your children the value of looking out for others as well as themselves and how wearing a face covering represents this.

I’m sure you already do this and they do appreciate the value of caring for their neighbours in order to have a harmonious healthy society.

Phobiaphobic · 27/11/2021 22:54

Unfortunately we are in the middle of it all until the pandemic has run its course. Pandemics do end but it takes several years.

But given there weren't vaccines available then, didn't all previous pandemics simply burn through the community until pretty much everyone had caught it and gained immunity? (Though obviously a small percentage died.) My concern is that constantly vaccinating and restricting may actually extenuate the pandemic for many years because the vaccine-induced immunity is so short-lived and new variants have constant opportunities to reinfect.

My DD and DS have been sick with anxiety all of today, they didnt even eat their chicken nuggets that I cooked to cheer them up. Confused

My mum will be confined to her home again now as she can't tell what people are saying when they wear masks due to being very hard of hearing. Just as she got her booster and said she was about to get on with life at last. All 3 jabs made her very ill but she was doing what she could for the greater good.. and look how far that got her. We spoke at length this evening and she's in pieces. She's one of the people you lot bang on about protecting. She's now essentially 'locked down' again because of masks returning. Is she also a whinging cry baby?

My gt aunt has dementia and is terrified of people wearing masks because she struggles to recognise people as it is. She's another one who's weekly trip to the shops is now off the cards. Another vulnerable person you'd say you're 'protecting'. Is she also a whinging cry baby?

Meh, communicating virtually is not ‘normal’ either but I don’t imagine you will be stopping your kids from ever having a phone/email/internet access to chat to their friends? Masks are inconvenient, life moves on and what wasn’t normal becomes normal.

Mischance · 27/11/2021 22:58

Covid is with us now and it is programmed to survive by creating variants. It will go on doing this, and the only option we have is to keep putting in measures that are appropriate to each new variant. Pain in the arse of course, but not optional if we want to survive.

This is a defence issue and some of the trillions that are spent on nuclear weapons need to be spent on getting the whole world vaccinated - the world is at far more risk of covid than it is of global war. The money should be spent on vaccines and education of those who resist the vaccine.

If we do not do this then this situation will be forever, and personally I do not want my GC to live the whole of their lives in this situation.

In the meantime, till world leaders pool resources to get global vaccination, we will simply have to keep biting the bullet on lockdowns and other measures.

Viruses have always been the major threat to life on earth and they are asserting themselves right now. I am glad my OH died before all this happened.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 27/11/2021 22:58

have you ever observed some people approaching an establishment? they pull a grubby, used mask (often pretty floral etsy special) out of a pocket or handbag (crumbs, receipts fly out too) they stick it on, go about their business with the said mask eventually pulled under the nose....then whip it off when leaving and stuff back into pocket/handbag

THAT behaviour will save lives? nobody bothers with hand sanitiser anymore,nobody seems to be socially distancing...but a scrap of damp material will save lives?

DappledOliveGroves · 27/11/2021 22:58

@NovemberNovemberDarkNights

No. I won't stay home. You want to try and live a risk-free life, then go for it. Stay home, don't leave your house, don't mix with anyone, don't cross a road, don't drink, eat meat, smoke, have processed food. Live forever. Knock yourself out.

Why oh why do humans think we're so special that we can avoid death and disease? Why do we think we can control a virus? You don't want catch it, that's fine. Take your own precautions and worry about you.
