Health Secretary has just said two cases have been found here. That was quick!

@ArblemarchTFruitbat

A third case has just been found - in London.

It'll be everywhere before we know it.

To be honest, it probably is already.

If it's so transmissible it may account for the recent spike here and on the continent.

The proportion of cases that are in London has been rising for a while (from a very low base). Maybe related? Here's a graph:

I genuinely have no more fucks left to give about Covid. It's a virus. They mutate. It's what they do. There's always going to be the next scary variant. Then the next really scary variant. Then the next really, really scary variant. Then the next really especially scary variant with bells on.

Except I'm not scared. I'm bored shitless about the whole dreary shebang.

If they found 13 cases on a flight from SA to Amsterdam yesterday, how many cases have been missed on all the flights that arrived in the UK over the past few days?! 🤦‍♀️

Then why bother posting? Go and be an ostrich is that's what you think is best.

Some of us want to know what's going on so we can make our own risk assessments.

xxxGirlCrushxxx · 28/11/2021 17:05

how would you know which strain you have? assume they call you to tell you?

bergam · 28/11/2021 17:07

Let us hope that Omicron is relatively harmless with few symptoms. It may transmit faster than Delta, but if the effect illness wise is minimal, well that's what I will hope for. If that is the case, the virus may weaken and disappear, - another optimistic note!

However, until we know, precautions have to be taken, and that is the correct approach IMV.

Nope I wasn't told last week . I just was told by email and text I was positive I havent had ONE phone call. My husband has though ( positive too ) and my adult children who live here (negative) They didnt tell him what strain it was either. We know were are not in Brentwood or Nottingham so it's not the new one
the80sweregreat · 28/11/2021 20:07

I've been isolating since last Monday and not had one phone call at all!
Had a positive pcr.

MarshaBradyo · 28/11/2021 20:09

Wouldn’t they only notify the new variant at this point?

Although that might change with some indication on result

Carrotte · 28/11/2021 20:24

They need a special Omicron ping on the app

Not many people have still got the app, apparently.
xxxGirlCrushxxx · 28/11/2021 22:09

and how did the name 'omicron' come about? it doesn't flow off the tongue nicely at allots awkward sounding

Has it just passed you by that all the variants are named after letters from the Greek alphabet?

They’re using the Greek alphabet to name the variants. They skipped the next two in line - Nu and Xi due to concerns that pronunciation might be confusing (they’re pronounced “Nee” and “X” - as in “foX” - apparently)
the80sweregreat · 28/11/2021 22:45

I've heard of a ' Mu ' ( the daily Mail had a list of the names given to some of the variants in the summer )
Of course someone wrote ' it stands for Made up ' , so maybe they won't use this one after all.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 29/11/2021 07:20

Mu and lambda are both Variants of Interest (rather than Variants of Concern)

Its amazing how quick some media is downplaying this.
Japan and Israel shut down borders.
Even with 5month gap my boosters after xmas.
I'm buying better masks never stopped wearing mine.

I honestly think there's more than 3 cases in the UK.
Also it was let slip yesterday that javid

That travellers don't test until day 2 and then took public transport home.
Also the media has not mention the effect of 3 south African Rugby matches at Twickenham/ Edinburgh and Cardiff.
Robert Peston said not all labs are currently equipped to identify different varients so I suspect not many will be told which varient they have so not many close contacts will be self isolating .

MarshaBradyo · 29/11/2021 07:48

Its amazing how quick some media is downplaying this.

I’d say it’s the opposite. Every case getting headline news. We don’t know yet what the variables are but it’s it whipping up.

Yes there will be more cases but that would suggest making the third headline news a bit redundant.

vera99 · 29/11/2021 08:02

Getting the feel that most experts aren't that and we need to wait for real time hospitalisation data before a call can be made. Just a few weeks ago was taking comfort in learned articles that implied Delta was probably the end of the line disease wise and then this.If it outcompetes Delta has the same disease severity as the other variants with 40% vaccine escape as some hot takes are suggesting then a lockdown seems inevitable.

manolantern · 29/11/2021 08:10

4 cases found in Lanarkshire, 2 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde..

Do you have a source for that?

Sorry- just found it- BBC are reporting.

It's everywhere already then.

Must be spreading around that area of Scotland anyway:

"Deputy First Minister John Swinney told BBC's Good Morning Scotland: "On some of the cases we are aware that there is no travel history involved.

"So what that tells us is that there must be a degree of community transmission of this particular strain of the virus.""
