Not only identified 2 days ago. A virologist I know to was talking about it days ago. Talked about in document dated 1 Oct 2021.

thereisonlyoneofme · 26/11/2021 16:57

Already in Belgium. We are not stopping flights until Sunday morning so Its got time to get here, if its not already

JanglyBeads · 26/11/2021 17:08

@lljkk that link is for a doc published on 1 October but last updated yesterday.

ElectraBlue · 26/11/2021 17:25

Stop panicking and carry on with your life.

Covid is not going away. Stick to facts rather than tabloids scaremongering.

mogsrus · 26/11/2021 17:28

It will now be with us for ever probably, in some shape just going to have to get used to every variant, no good getting uptight, it won’t change the outcome.

Immaculatemisconception · 26/11/2021 17:30

They don't know yet but a Professor on the LBC said this afternoon, with all that mutation, the new variant might well be less serious/infectious.

Lostmyheart101 · 26/11/2021 17:32

I do find it strange how quickly the government have reacted, that brings the fear factor in itself, normally they need rockets up their arse!

Unsure33 · 26/11/2021 17:32

Let the scientists do their jobs . They have to work out if the chances of more serious illness or hospitalisation is increased . All they know at the moment is that it could be more transmissible . It may not be serious , but they just don’t know yet so are buying time .

Unsure33 · 26/11/2021 17:33

@Lostmyheart101

It’s obviously because of the number of mutations.

They have done the right thing l

Buy time to do research

Russianmax · 26/11/2021 17:36

I think the government are acting fast because they've done a lot wrong lately and are not so popular as they hoped to be. If they mess up on this they'll be struggling even more.

I can't panic anymore over Covid. I just can't.

Remember worrying over the Rule of 6 and not sitting down whilst out for walks.

tttigress · 26/11/2021 17:51

To be honest, I think the media are loving hyping up the fear again.

The more focus there is on Corona, the more money it makes them.

oakleaffy · 26/11/2021 17:53

It's absolutely INSANE to allow flights in and people from South African 'Hotspots' in to UK.
Stop all International travel, unless for goods and services with vaccinated staff.

I agree
FlorenceWintle · 26/11/2021 18:03

We don’t know what it does yet. All we know is that it has lots of mutations but we don’t yet know what that means in real life. It could be worse, but there’s an equal chance that it isn’t.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/11/2021 18:15

I think we will go back to some form of lockdown like we see some of Europe doing, of course being Brits we will be among the last to do so meaning there will be inevitably be a greater loss of life and harsher restrictions.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2021 18:16

Why?

Hospitalisation is falling

VladmirsPoutine · 26/11/2021 18:18

For now they are but a potentially newer, stronger strain, coupled with winter and flu season and an NHS already on its knees means I don't hold out much hope.

We don’t know yet re variant and it looks ok if not an issue
chararara · 26/11/2021 18:21

I honestly don't care at this point. Don't really read the news, just go about my own life. My vulnerable relatives have other, more pressing health concerns that will kill them more imminently than covid. I got vaccinated, will get the booster. Other than annoyance at unvaccinated people providing a nice ground for covid to thrive on, I don't see what else I can do now except see my family and friends and enjoy life.

IncessantNameChanger · 26/11/2021 18:22

I just cant honestly take another lockdown during term time this side of Christmas. I really suddenly feel completely broken. I have been crying most of the week. At the gp, at parents evening, at toddler group. That's just from thinking about what covid has stolen from my kids. That's before this news.

Its bound to get here at some point and there's nothing realistically to stop it. I just hope its after Christmas tbh

GaolBhoAlba · 26/11/2021 18:23

If its more transmissable than delta, then it will eventually get here regardless of travel restrictions. Vaccines will still work on variants, perhaps less effectively, but still well - the efficacy against delta is crazy good. I'm fully vaccinated, so i'm not worried. Variants are something we'll have to live with.

There is NO plausible scenario this will take us back to square one and there is a lot of misinformation currently circulating. Working on a thread now."

YoComoManzanas · 26/11/2021 18:26

Oh no they've called it Omicron, that's next level!

Dreamstate · 26/11/2021 18:29

Nothing like a good old scaremongering. No doubt some rich people made shit tons of money on the abysmal stock market drop today.....completely overblown but money wants more money and so the merry go round continues.

Nothing like a good old panic for them to get richer.

I'm not bothered anymore, we all die one day so fuck it if my time comes sooner so be it but I'd rather live my life to the fullest every day then just exist so I can live longer

Wimblingwombling · 26/11/2021 18:32

The red list thing does nothing- viruses don’t limit themselves to direct flights.
