Loss of smell and taste getting me down

Isla3354 · 06/11/2021 18:44

Tested positive 14 days ago. Lost my smell and taste completley 6 days ago. It’s really getting me down, I feel so fed up. And looking online is making it worse as there all stories of this lasting months. Any tips on returning these sooner? Or anyone have this and it didn’t lass long. Thank you in advance

OP, I tested positive cca two months ago and lost my smell at that time as well too, it came back in one week again.

justbananas42 · 06/11/2021 18:54

Me too OP - lost mine yesterday. It’s devastating.

Funnyfive · 06/11/2021 19:00

I lost mine in early October and I felt exactly the same, I can vaguely smell and taste now, it’s still really boring and irritating but I’ve sort of got used to it 🙁

whyarentiskinnyet · 06/11/2021 19:06

Lost mine in the summer and also found it so depressing. I also read all the horror stories online of it lasting for months but it came back within about 2 weeks. I hope yours come back soon, it really is the worst :(

justbananas42 · 06/11/2021 19:07

@whyarentiskinnyet was it a sudden or gradual return?

whyarentiskinnyet · 06/11/2021 19:22

Gradual but quickly if that makes sense, like it didn't take long to return fully.

BernardsBum · 06/11/2021 19:27

I tested positive mid-September. Total loss of smell and taste. Started to come back after two weeks, however sense of smell still not back properly - some things seem really muted and I cannot pick up really subtle smells.

justbananas42 · 06/11/2021 19:28

Thanks @whyarentiskinnyet. I can’t take much more of this Sad

speakout · 06/11/2021 19:34

Sorry to hear this.
My DD had Covid in June and still has major disruption to smell and taste.

Took me about a month to get most of it back. It’s a long haul but you’ll get there.

YungDumbThrills · 06/11/2021 20:28

I'm 10 months in, but it turned into Parosmia in May. It's hell

itsallgoingpearshaped · 06/11/2021 20:30

Lost mine about 4 days into Covid a few weeks ago; it started coming back about 10 days after I lost it and is mostly back now. Hang in there. Flowers

Doofas · 06/11/2021 20:37

It can take a while to come back. Would it be useful to focus on textures of food to try and not get down so much. It is hard as it's such a total loss.

justbananas42 · 06/11/2021 20:45

For some it is, not all. Let’s hope we’re one of the lucky ones OP Flowers

DH and I got a takeaway curry tonight - couldn’t taste a thing Sad

Bobholll · 06/11/2021 20:47

I got my taste back in about 2 weeks. It’s still not 100% a month later & some days are better than others but enough to enjoy food!

My smell is still only about 30%. But to be honest, it’s OK. I can’t smell my daughters nappies much but I can smell enough to know things have a smell 😄

Yesterday!! How can you be devastated one day in ?

Op, I'm 4 weeks in and tonight I had a hint of taste, to be fair it was a fresh chilli and it was more the heat I could feel but better than nothing.

justbananas42 · 06/11/2021 21:14

Yesterday!! How can you be devastated one day in

Because I adore cooking, love my food and it’s just awful!! Plus I’ve been reading horror stories where people haven’t got their taste back for months.

Well I hope it comes back for you quickly or you're going to be right on the edge by week 4 or longer.

Isla3354 · 07/11/2021 06:33

Thank you for the reply’s. I feel stupid for moaning about smells and taste when people have lost their lives to this. However, it gives me anxiety, it freaks me out, I panic that what if there’s a fire and I don’t smell etc. i hope it comes back soon it’s driving me nuts!

Two weeks in since losing taste and smell. Mine was gone for 4-5 days completely. Taste came back gradually, still not fully but faster than smell which is still not great. Got an Indian takeaway last night, which I thought might be nice but it wasn't the same. I am enjoying some food again, compared to 10 days ago, so hang in there.

justbananas42 · 07/11/2021 07:25

@kessiebird thanks Kessie. Life without taste is totally miserable IMO.

The link above is about trials involving Vitamin A nasal drops. I've ordered some vitamin A drops in desperation.

DH doesn't seem to understand I've 100% no sense of taste or smell. He's been shopping for all my favourite foods. I had a bit of a melt down when I asked for carrot sticks (because they're crunchy, and therefor interesting to eat) and he also bought me hummus. I may have wailed "What is the point of hummus if you can't taste it?!"

I absolutely love food. I love scented candles, the smell of clean sheets etc. Devastated is a very strong word - but I'm certainly disappointed. Very disappointed. At least I can still remember and imagine how things taste. I have been imagining Toblerones quite a lot.

Walkers Thai crisps are spicy and crunchy- although you can't taste the spice, you can feel the chilli and enjoy the crunch. I may have had a large bag for breakfast yesterday

I think I might go Vegan while I can't taste.

I thought what if one day my DC have babies, and I can't smell the baby, and had a little cry to myself.
